groovypanda yr Solar Wind mix is really hitting the spot for me today; the Jonsi & Alex/Stars of the Lid bit in particular is just tremendous

also can I just mention that I totally love the MixCloud interface now

is mixcloud good for hosting? it seems like people are still using soundcloud.

Soundcloud has a bigger user install base but the last couple of sets I've tried to upload have been blocked for including songs without licenses, because of course I'm getting hellapaid with my average .000005 plays per track even though (at the time) I was a paying member; they also took a bunch of sets down over Christmas break. Mixcloud doesn't allow for DLs and has a hard file-size limit of 100MB which sucks, but they've never taken anything down, the interface is REALLY user-friendly (basically you're forced to enter a tracklist & time-code your set so that people can easily see what song is playing at any given moment), and the embeddable player is really nice too.

I use both. Soundcloud let's you provide download links but you only get to host 2hrs worth of music for free.

Mixcloud is unlimited (although each mix has to be under 100 MB) and it's stream only ( but there are other sites that let you download mixcloud mixes).

Soundcloud also seem to be stricter on copyright infringement.

groovypanda, Thursday, 18 August 2011 21:19 (twelve years ago) link

100 mb is a tough limit ... can you get around it with shitty encoding? i guess why would you want to.

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Thursday, 18 August 2011 21:35 (twelve years ago) link

you can either downgrade the bitrate or split long mixes into multiple files.

you see James Murphy played 112 BPM on Beats in Space? Off the Automan bootleg though. Other than that pedantic comment, great stuff. Got me excited about two recent DFA releases I missed, the NDF and Woolfy tracks.

Offical FM is pretty sweet and you can upload up to 500mb http://official.fm/ its got a nice streaming & downloading feature too.

I either use that or put a DL on sendspace at good quality then another version on mixcloud at a lower quality just because it looks good and people like it.

jimitheexploder, Friday, 19 August 2011 17:37 (twelve years ago) link

I use both soundcloud and mixcloud and just upload a lower quality to mixcloud...soundcloud gets real screwy when I'm uploading, but no problems with mixcloud.

Made a mix for the end of summer: Poppy house full off sunshiney hooks, butter-voiced vocals, and good vibes, but with the air of latent melancholy attendant to the impending end of summer.

Really nice mix there 'Wyatt Purp'. I especially enjoy the first half, although the Bashmore remix of Into The Valley is one of the best straight house songs in recent memory. Also, Maceo Plex - Fallin <3<3<3

Are your internet ears burning? We were just talking about you...apparently one of the regulars is an acquaintance of yours. I actually thought you might be the same person at first, which is kind of why I brought it up in the first place....anyway that Turntable.fm room looks cool, too bad about the Facebook login. Thanks again bro.

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Tuesday, 30 August 2011 04:25 (twelve years ago) link

yea it is a good room in a sea of brostep and 'indie while you work' type bullshit. i don't know who that person is but i am in there a lot and s/he probably has a different sn. i recommend it tho, if you have a facebook? you don't have to link your profile or anything... also you could make a fake facebook page and use that (not that i have ever imagined doing such a thing)

Because my mixes are all very labour intensive, tediously drawn out, and computer-made, I made some no-frills (i.e. one take, no edits, no mp3s, improvised, just 2 turntables and a cdj) "honest" mixes. Because the aforementioned audacity crash stole my perfect mix, here's the next best thing.

yea edb your mixes are reliably excellent, i listen to them pretty often actually! just gets repetitive to say "i like this" over and over but the last few have been especially great (haven't listened to this new one yet tho)

Thanks! (for the praise and the vote of confidence). Ahhh, I'm gonna miss making mixes, unless of course I get a new computer/ turntable access during the year. Over the last 5 years it's been one of the most effective means of digesting new music.
