I don't mind this guy's music tho. As has been said, competent as fuck. I know a few people who are super-into him.

The Reverend, Friday, 12 August 2011 00:19 (twelve years ago) link

How does he see out of the mask with all these LEDs in his face to dj?

The Reverend, Friday, 12 August 2011 00:21 (twelve years ago) link

Let's ask the important questions here.

The Reverend, Friday, 12 August 2011 00:22 (twelve years ago) link

Nothing gives you a profile in dance music like obscuring a face or identity that no one would care about otherwise.

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 12 August 2011 01:50 (twelve years ago) link

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 12 August 2011 01:51 (twelve years ago) link

i guess this is sarcastic but i honestly don't know what the word "prog" means in relation to dance music. is that on some idm bedroom techno tip? i meant like actual dance music that people dance to.

some dude, Friday, 12 August 2011 03:08 (twelve years ago) link

oh i dunno, maybe compared to a conceptual artist like moby?

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 12 August 2011 03:18 (twelve years ago) link

you're certainly right though, some actual dance music is on the cool beat tips.

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 12 August 2011 03:21 (twelve years ago) link

oops, i meant cool beats tip

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 12 August 2011 03:21 (twelve years ago) link

maybe i should break it down for you. a lot of "hip kids" in certain high schools (maybe the sort where kids can afford to go to coachella), and when i say hip kids, i mean the sort of kids who are into screamo and go to shows are really into "dubstep". and i put it in quotes because it's a particularly abrasive variant of the sound. this is a bit of history repeating, as i can recall post-college, lots of kids who were into metal or industrial or post-hardcore were also into really tough, angry "drum and bass". on the other hand, a lot of kids in high school, and these might be your more "popular" kids, they are just into whatever mershy dance music is on the billboard chart. in a lot of ways, deadmau5 meets the two in the middle.

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 12 August 2011 03:26 (twelve years ago) link

cool beats tips: don't be danceable

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 12 August 2011 03:26 (twelve years ago) link

so like, hip kids like deadmau5 because it sounds like their hip dubstep music, and popular kids like deadmau5 because it sounds like the popular music of the billboard charts, and everyone wants to be hip and/or popular, so everyone listens to deadmau5.

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 12 August 2011 03:27 (twelve years ago) link

Otm, but i have no idea what you were on about previously.

xp Before your last two posts, I mean.

The Reverend, Friday, 12 August 2011 03:29 (twelve years ago) link

there are also "trendy" "hipster" kids now who listen to things like MGMT and daft punk and justice, and they like deadmau5 too, because at times it sounds like that, too

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 12 August 2011 03:31 (twelve years ago) link

prog means that dudes are always going to try to make some sort of "serious statement" collaborative music

same way you might call kanye "prog-rap", ig uess

lamp was talking about the deadmau5 guy's personality/vibe, so i was comparing to other dance music artists. i feel like you're talking about dance music fans?

some dude, Friday, 12 August 2011 03:42 (twelve years ago) link

I guess it's an electronica thing.

lol is not enough (blank), Friday, 12 August 2011 03:43 (twelve years ago) link

no, i'm not

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 12 August 2011 03:43 (twelve years ago) link

fair enough, it's pretty clear i'm never going to have an idea of what you're talking about so i'll stop pretending i can figure it out

t/s deadmau5 vs MOOMBAHTON

though it distresses me to take diplo's side on anything, the latter most definitely.

Was curious about this outfit too, given his/their placement on the Lollapalooza poster.

kkvgz, Friday, 12 August 2011 16:46 (twelve years ago) link

Don't think the burner/jam crowd really go for Deadmau5. They love that Bassnectar asshat.

errant flynn, Friday, 12 August 2011 16:52 (twelve years ago) link

thought i mentioned pretty lights upthread, i guess not. a friend of mine teaches high school drumline and all of the kids (who also go to jam band shows etc) freak out over them. listened to a track on youtube and it was corny as hell, but i guess it's about the eponymous live show.

it seems like the one artist who crosses over between the kiddie dubstep scene and the beat scene/critics/pitchfork etc is Eskmo.

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Friday, 12 August 2011 16:54 (twelve years ago) link

was that bassnectar dig insinuating that he's somehow sooo below deadmau5 cuz that's lol

fauxmarc, Friday, 12 August 2011 16:56 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, totally!

errant flynn, Friday, 12 August 2011 17:22 (twelve years ago) link

pretty lights >>> deadmau5 > bassnectar

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 12 August 2011 19:26 (twelve years ago) link

deadmau5 has like one memorable jam and a ton of LCD shit. bassnectar is all LCD.

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 12 August 2011 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

I think Deadmau5 is exactly where I draw the line. If you are better than Deadmau5, I fuck with you. If you are worse than Deadmau5, fuck outta here.

The Reverend, Friday, 12 August 2011 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

bassnectar is all LCD.

Skrillex is p much the worst shit ever.

The Reverend, Friday, 12 August 2011 20:47 (twelve years ago) link

Skrillex really is entirely bewildering to me.
