trailer looks interesting but uh haven't there been enough marvel comics-based movies this summer?

thor
x-men 1st class
crappy transformers, sorta
this one

slow down ffs. spread those IPs out.

little mushroom person (abanana), Friday, 22 July 2011 23:24 (twelve years ago) link

well they had to rush out thor and cap so they can do avengers next summer. and transformers has nothing to do with marvel

lizard tails, a self-regenerating food source for survival (wk), Saturday, 23 July 2011 00:09 (twelve years ago) link

and xmen doesn't really have anything to do with marvel either. Fox has to release an xmen movie every 3 years or they lose the rights back to marvel.

tbh the kids in that last video could replace most film critics and noone would notice

that rang most true for response to "what do you most want to see?"
"horrible bosses... and... harry potter."

Hasbro had previously worked with Marvel Comics to develop G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero for a three-pronged marketing scheme - the toyline, a tie-in comic book by Marvel, and an animated mini-series co-produced by Marvel's media arm, Marvel Productions, and the Griffin-Bacal Advertising Agency's Sunbow Productions animation studio. Given the success of that strategy, the process was repeated in 1984 when Hasbro marketing vice president Bob Prupis approached Marvel to develop their new robot series, which Jay Bacal dubbed "Transformers."[3]

i don't like that i knew that already, but at least i had to confirm with wiki.

apichathong song (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 23 July 2011 00:38 (twelve years ago) link

yes, there was a transformers comic, but marvel have nothing to do with the transformers movie. and marvel studios has nothing to do with the x-men, spiderman, fantastic four, daredevil, or ghost rider movies.

lizard tails, a self-regenerating food source for survival (wk), Saturday, 23 July 2011 00:51 (twelve years ago) link

so I'm just saying it doesn't make sense to say "why did marvel put out 4 movies this summer?" when they only put out 2. that still may be one or two too many, but you can't blame them for transformers.

lizard tails, a self-regenerating food source for survival (wk), Saturday, 23 July 2011 00:52 (twelve years ago) link

i think people are just reacting to the glut of comics-themed movies this summer, whoever is behind them

by another name (amateurist), Saturday, 23 July 2011 01:03 (twelve years ago) link

and while one studio isn't responsible for all of them, surely all studios knew what the others' summer schedules were. so they must have figured there was an inexhaustible market for this stuff.

by another name (amateurist), Saturday, 23 July 2011 01:04 (twelve years ago) link

well there sort of is isn't there? Thor, X-Men and Transformers are all in the year's top 10 box office gross so far. why would any rational studio say "hey, let's sit this summer out and give someone else a turn"? Fox basically had to make the X-men movie to keep their license, and Marvel is doing what they can with the second rate characters they have the rights to. And that involves quickly putting out Thor and Captain America movies so they can try to make Avengers into something that's as big as X-Men or Spiderman (neither of which they will ever have the movie rights to again).

The only big flop has been Green Lantern, so it would make more sense to complain about the shit DC puts out.

FWIW Captain America is better than the other three comic-based summer flicks from this year

THIS IS SATIRE BTW (Simon H.), Saturday, 23 July 2011 02:33 (twelve years ago) link

This movie was hella corny and boring.

Sample dialogue from a fight scene:

Bad guy: "You never give up, do you?"
Captain: "Nope!"

Bleh.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 24 July 2011 05:30 (twelve years ago) link

Could someone who has seen it comment on the action:dialog ratio. My kid and I have been to every movie in this Avengers sequence, but for some reason he is convinced that this one will have "too much grown-ups talking".

kkvgz, Thursday, 28 July 2011 13:30 (twelve years ago) link

I thought it was a pretty decent balance, and the action scenes are well-shot. Plus, every single word out of Tommy Lee Jones's mouth is gold. He's basically playing "Gen. Tommy Lee Jones" but his performance is the unsung hero of the movie. Dominic Cooper is good, too.

BIG HOOBA aka the stankdriver (Phil D.), Thursday, 28 July 2011 14:03 (twelve years ago) link

xxpost That sounds like some typical Simon & Kirby dialogue! I've got to see this.

I like you, CAPTAIN AMERICA the movie.

The plot-heavy bits involving lasers and girders were alright, but I was surprised by the emotional investment I put in. That last line in the movie packed a mighty punch for me.

Just saw this, enjoyed it. Was a bit disappointed that they didn't bother to name the Howling Commandos, but by and large a good matinee affair.

i though this kinda stunk.

took solace amid the endless montages with the supporting cast. tell me hugo weaving wasn't just doing a werner herzog impression the whole time?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 1 August 2011 04:48 (twelve years ago) link

Sounds like I should be glad I took my kid to Cowboys & Aliens instead. It was definitely an entertaining action movie, if not exactly "Ordinary People" or whatever...

kkvgz, Monday, 1 August 2011 13:03 (twelve years ago) link

I thought this wasn't too bad, most likely the best of the summer comic book flicks of 2011, but that isn't really saying a whole lot. Tommy Lee Jones was over the top in all the right ways and Dominic Cooper made a great Howard Stark. Loved the guy playing Dum Dum Dugan too, wouldn't mind seeing more of him in other movies, but thats not likely with him stuck in the 40s and the rumored next Cap movie set in the present day.

i thought the ending was kinda...pat?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 1 August 2011 15:05 (twelve years ago) link

The ending was 100% to set up the Avengers flick, which was really my only complaint. I mean, I'm super excited for the Avengers movie but can we let these other films stand on their own?

Yeah, he's talked about this in interviews. Quite an accurate one too

I thought this was OK but not great. TLJ and Tucci were p good as was the lead. Something was missing overall and I thought it was a little boring.

too much of the captain's operations were glossed over in montage. i don't know why movies do this, the kinds of 'learning' scenes of a hero figuring out how to be a hero are the most exciting. it just skipped from him being a show pony to a badass, which is just ho-hum.

and the dialogue was really childish.

i dunno anything about red skull or 'hydra', but i thought making him a rogue to the point of being against the germans was weirdly excusing of fascism? like johnston didn't even want the to deal with the realness at all, as if 'raiders of the lost ark' was too much like 'the sorrow and the pity' or something.

goole, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 15:29 (twelve years ago) link

I don't really see how Raiders was anymore realistic?

Number None, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 15:33 (twelve years ago) link

I had the same thoughts about them ducking the issue of fascism by making Hydra even turn against the Nazis, but then I remembered that this was a movie about super-serum and a man being frozen for 70 years.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 15:44 (twelve years ago) link

captain america fought nazis! what the hell, why get squeamish now

goole, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 15:50 (twelve years ago) link

Sean Connery dressed up like a teddy bear (R Baez), Tuesday, 2 August 2011 15:50 (twelve years ago) link

It's not like they made up Hydra for the film. They're probably sowing the seeds for their appearance in future movies too

Number None, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 16:01 (twelve years ago) link

In order to become a member of HYDRA, an individual must be a legal adult willing to submit to a thorough investigation of the applicant's personal background and to swear a death-oath of loyalty to HYDRA and its principles.

Glad to know they thoroughly vet all their members

lol hydra background check

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 2 August 2011 16:21 (twelve years ago) link

Thought this was a lot better than ok.

Highlights-

Kid chucked in water to create 'him or me' dilemma being all 'wtf i can swim go get im'

Cpt America sneaking into HYDRA base is quite clearly spotted crossing the floor by one of the workers, who just isn't bothered tbh

Thank fuck it was about beating evil bad guys, was quite worried it might go the Nolan route of SRS ISSUES THRU SPANDEX

Peggy was incredible

Well the Marvel films in general are a lot more light-hearted than the Nolanverse. As they should be. Peggy was pretty great yeah. Pity that's the last we're going to see of her

Well the Marvel films in general are a lot more light-hearted than the Nolanverse. As they should be.

This is one of the reasons I enjoyed this movie. It was like an old Captain America comic, it wasn't trying to be edgy or dark in an attempt to be more modern.
