Hey J0rdan, this is kinda interesting...I think I may have found the oldest grocery bag line in existence...but it's obviously where the idea in hip hop came from, but this is pretty much a Proper Grocery Bag. Doubt we'll find anything earlier than this.

punk poet John Cooper Clarke, 1979, the piece "Twat"...listen at 46/47 seconds in...

thomp, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:06 (twelve years ago) link

how do you ruin shitty drake punchlines?

anyway kinda interesting as obviously no rapper has ever heard john cooper clarke, but weird when someone thought of the exact same structure totally separately that long ago...even the long pause, the whole construction is just the same.

amada thuggindiss (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:08 (twelve years ago) link

I could have sworn I made the John Cooper Clarke grocery bag observation once upon a time but evidently not on ILX.

I suspect if you are going down this road there's something even earlier than 1979 but that'd an excellent effort nonetheles.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:20 (twelve years ago) link

i wasn't really looking, i was just listening to "me and my big mouth" this cooper clarke old vinyl comp this AM and that line jumped out at me!

amada thuggindiss (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:22 (twelve years ago) link

I'm not sure it's quite shoehorned in enough though.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:22 (twelve years ago) link

Maybe if it were like "You make life a fairytale... BEANSTALK" then it'd attain the right level of clumsiness.

xpost thanks for reposting what i just said whiney

i get the feeling you're trying to make a point, so you're thinking lil' wayne and drake have heard this particular john cooper clarke song or what?

amada thuggindiss (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:59 (twelve years ago) link

Ha at "You make life a fairytale... BEANSTALK"

I mentioned this in the Ice Cube thread, but when I saw him live a couple of weeks ago (w/ Naughty by Nature, who were kinda great!), he brought out one of his sons to rap (he goes by the name Doughboy, which is kind of weird, I think), and the kid dropped like 4 or 5 grocery bags right out of the gate. Something about "we burning trees... CHRISTMAS" or some such.

She Got the Shakes, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 17:06 (twelve years ago) link

I like the expression "dropped grocery bags," like droppin' bags is the equivalent of droppin' bombs or droppin' science, but with words left out.

the line works because it's delivered with a "look at how badass i am", not a "look how clever i am"

Is there a monarch known for being really cheap and stingy with their crown jewels or whatever? Because that just begs for a "Never paying royalty... NAME OF A MONARCH" construction.

Ugh. I keep hearing that song with the idiot going "She wax it all off... MR. MIYAGI" on WPGC, and I just found out it's by Chris Brown. I really, really can't stand that guy.

She Got the Shakes, Wednesday, 17 August 2011 04:28 (twelve years ago) link

as i said in the chris brown thread, i don't think your chick waxing her pubes counts as much of a brag

if you've ever encountered a vag, you'll know that not all women do that

Erin Go! Bwaaaah!!! (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 06:13 (twelve years ago) link

i always thought that line was "she gives me handjobs...old asian man, and also car doors, and ritual suicide," not "she shaves her v....old asian man etc."

forkshighwaytopoopon (some dude), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 11:21 (twelve years ago) link

lol, that's an interesting interpretation

i'm not sure that getting handjobs is much to brag about either, at least not if you're chris brown

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 17 August 2011 11:26 (twelve years ago) link

i'll never be able to hear that line again & not think "whacks it all off" tho

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 17 August 2011 11:27 (twelve years ago) link

i don't mean "wax = whacks," i mean like "wax on wax off" in karate kid is in reference to a repetitive hand motion

forkshighwaytopoopon (some dude), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 11:29 (twelve years ago) link

but there's no one right answer or interpretation.

i should've clarified -- i got what you meant in terms of a 'repetitive hand motion', but bringing up handjobs in the first place made me think of "whacks it all off", which now has a permanent spot in my brain

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 17 August 2011 11:42 (twelve years ago) link

right. i'm glad we're being clear about this, this is important.

forkshighwaytopoopon (some dude), Wednesday, 17 August 2011 11:43 (twelve years ago) link

either way, there's no denying that the general construction is "women want to have sex with me, btw car doors"

well that characterization goes well with k3v's line about the "bop-it! production"
