pretty good album!

mutant slow drum (BradNelson), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 05:26 (twelve years ago) link

Whole album is on Spotify. Tom's vocals have gone totally to shit -- therefore the focus on instrumentals and "atmosphere" -- but the album as a whole is really pretty good, especially if you 'ship Tom and Mark. The tracklisting is very good: Up All Night sounds better in context. Second song, fourth song, last song, and the title song are keepers for sure. I also like Kaleidoscope and the untitled Mark Hoppus song, for the great way they express irritation, and Snake Charmer and the interlude, for "atmosphere".

The rest of the songs are just okay--at least they advance the narrative--though one of them ("Wishing Well") sounds like something you'd hear on alternative radio today. Anyway, that's my first impression.

For the record, the "last song" I was talking about is Even If She Falls off the Deluxe version of the album, not Love is Dangerous off the regular version (what Spotify is now playing). Someone on the legal team must have gotten a hold of someone on Spotify and warned them not to give the game away.

Yeah there are some huge lyrical clunkers here and his willful mispronunciation is off the charts, making the "muy 'ed" sound like nbd, but I find myself liking large chunks of this. The lead single was a horrible choice, I think there were about 3 or 4 other songs with bigger hooks that would have performed better ("After Midnight" would have been especially good). I also love the gratuitous "fucking"s thrown all over the album, he still does a pretty good job of imitating a petulant teenageer. I like that they retained some of the Cure influences (albeit very basic) from the self-titled disc. I'll take this over any of the side project shit any day.

"After Midnight" is apparently the 2nd single, at least

wes2gully (some dude), Thursday, 29 September 2011 17:58 (twelve years ago) link

Pretty good choice then.

This is why it makes it hard for me to stay at some dude when he clowns me, he is like the only dude consistently posting worthwhile shit on the threads of dinosaur alt-rock bands with new albums (Blink, Primus, etc).

lol Tom pronounces 'cavalry' like 'calvary' on "This Is Home"

"Wishing Well" is definitely my favorite track

some dude, Friday, 30 September 2011 01:30 (twelve years ago) link

think my favorite is either "natives" or "kaleidoscope" and maybe "fighting the gravity" too

also "love is dangerous" which is exactly what i've wanted angels and airwaves to actually sound like

mutant slow drum (BradNelson), Friday, 30 September 2011 03:39 (twelve years ago) link

what i wrote in discussion w/ a friend on facebook who used to be a huge teenage blink fan to the point where he taught me songs of theirs on guitar. (i also really liked them, although thought the s/t was wank).

For me- 1. It is so joyless. As if to grow up and stop with the dick jokes, they have also abondoned all wit and charm from their previous records. 2. Hoppus's bass, imo, the best part of the instrumental side of the band, barely exists. 3.... Tom DeLonge's lyrics seem to have become more like a whiney teenager than ever, and yet he has totally lost his voice, at times sounding like a whole different singer. 4. In all fairness, the drums are very good and I do like the mature sound, still with a huge Cure influence.

Ravaging Rick Rude (a hoy hoy), Friday, 30 September 2011 05:23 (twelve years ago) link

I can't really say I argue with any of your points there, but I think maybe I'm a little more forgiving overall? I like this well enough. Before Whiney jumps all over me for imagined hyperbole or w/e, let me say that I'm not claiming this is like album of the year or even top 20 material, just a better album than I expected it to be at this stage in their career.
