Is this the Juno thread?

I thought it was a on the self-precious side but I pretty quickly started viewing all of the characters as being distorted prisms refracted through Juno's quirkometer and what seemed overly fake turned into ludicrously stylized and hilarious.

Sure--just don't ask me to go down the Up in the Air road again.

I found it hard to look past Juno's character. She seemed like something out of sitcom to me--every line was an acerbic and not especially witty comeback. I found her very tiresome very quickly. I found all the little signs of coolness or whatever that were hung on her--(from memory) Herschell G. Lewis, the Stooges, etc.--contrived. The relationship between her and Jason Bateman didn't seem credible to me at all.

Those were my main objections. But I didn't think the film was evil or anything, hence my exasperation defending Up in the Air last year.

Huh. Yeah I definitely didn't think about it that much at all. I also saw it when I was working with preg teens so I'm pretty sure I was really apprehensive about it in general. I think maybe I found Juno herself really unlikeable too but I can't be sure. I should watch it again someday now that I'm now longer knee deep in that shizz as our little lady herself might say.

Juno isn't particularly likeable but many of the reactions in the movie are so ludicrous that I just spent a lot of time lolling; the only "authentic" scenes in the movie (I believe intentionally so) are the birth scene and its immediate aftermath, although IIRC people act less like caricatures from that point in the movie onward (basically because Juno grows up some after this experience and isn't perceiving everyone around her as sitcom characters).

This is all super half-baked speculation based off of half paying attention to the movie while playing WoW, btw

i kind of liked this movie even though the dialogue is sometimes really irritating. i think the scene tamtam quoted is the worst. jennifer garner's storyline is good, i think.

if you did that, Ring-esque tapes would circulate with random images going "Yo Yo Yiggady Yo" and "PHUKET, THAILAND" at you; seven days after watching it, Diablo Cody would crawl out of your television and turn your face into a burger phone

Yeah HS - I remember really liking the Jennifer Garnder bit too and thinking she was great in that role.

jennifer's body is actually obviously worse but for some reason the dialogue irks me less coming out of that delightful amanda seyfried

ha I watched most of "Jennifer's Body" in a bar and, without dialogue, it was kind of great

lol I really did not pay attention to Juno, I think I missed almost the entirety of Jason Batemen's part

thinking about the lyrics, i guess i don't really want to see a movie based on that song, even though i love it

it's kind of a bummer jason bateman has to play a jackass but he was good, too

I liked Jennifer's Body, although Diablo Cody's dialogue gets to be a bit much.

it has nothing to do with the song unless i'm forgetting the part in the song about the queen bitch cheerleader being sacrificed to satan by a touring indie band and coming back as a man-eating demon

Point of comparison: Thora Birch's character in Ghost World mostly consists of acerbic comebacks, yet I love the character and love the film. There's sometimes no accounting for how two versions of the same thing hit you differently.

ha i didn't even realize it was a diablo cody movie i thought strongo was just doing his peripatetic thing

im pretty sure violet plays over the end credits

thora birch gets much better lines in ghost world than ellen page does in juno. spirit of the two movies is substantially different. the dialogue in juno is a bad fit because it's kind of a sentimental, earnest movie.

The Evil Dead remake would help explain Juno's improbable Herschell Gordon Lewis fandom. (Which was really my point--such things seemed more like Juno's creators trying to impress me with their pop-culture knowledge than anything plausibly to do with Juno's character.)

I saw it in a theater with someone else, so when it came on cable I had to watch it again. I think he's traumatized now.

clemenza: as someone who ran with a clique of smart, sarcastic kids in a MN town, all of that stuff is WAY more plausible than you'd think

we even had someone who would have said "honest to blog" had blogs existed, but she was considered "the dumb one"
