shameful confession: I read and enjoyed a good portion of Judd's run on Exiles

DJP, Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:06 (twelve years ago) link

Don't need to get into it, but he still writes better comics than fellow "celebrity writer" Kevin Smith

mh, Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:06 (twelve years ago) link

didn't judd do a graphic novel about the death of pedro?

haha also lol @ judd as a "celebrity"

death to ilx, long live the frogbs (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:07 (twelve years ago) link

Judd won an EISNER for his graphic novel about the death of Pedro IIRC

DJP, Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:08 (twelve years ago) link

sorry, he was nominated but didn't win

DJP, Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:09 (twelve years ago) link

r.i.p. will eisner its so sad you were talented and died specifically before you could see that

death to ilx, long live the frogbs (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:09 (twelve years ago) link

but yeah i remember seeing that book in barnes and noble or something and remembering dude was a failed cartoonist from the show and being a little "if this is secretly your attempt at breaking-in after all these years then icky, dude."

death to ilx, long live the frogbs (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:13 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, I had the same thought

then Puck called him out during a reunion show using the same argument and I had to ask myself some difficult questions

DJP, Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:15 (twelve years ago) link

oh geez, I was thinking that he wrote/drew that a couple years after the show. it was published in 2000! gaaah

mh, Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:15 (twelve years ago) link

he was already getting notice/recognition for Barry Ween but the Pedro book was his real breakthrough

DJP, Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:21 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I read further and noticed that. Barry Ween was not bad as an original thing, right?

I actually saw the show AFTER having seen some of his comics work and was impressed because a lot of dudes I know who are a lot like him crank out much worse material

mh, Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:24 (twelve years ago) link

otm, when you're on the side of The Puck then it's time to look within

my incredulity at Judd's comics career has little to do with the quality of his work and everything to do with his portrayal on The Real World

although he is responsible for creating resurrecting Jason Todd as THE CLITORIS, er I mean RED HOOD

DJP, Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:26 (twelve years ago) link

hahaha

what grant morrison never told anyone was that the black glove was originally supposed to be puck

I would love an alumni Real World season with Beth, Puck, Tami, CT, Karamo, Brooke, and Joey

someone would end up dead

DJP, Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:39 (twelve years ago) link

(hopefully CT)

DJP, Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:41 (twelve years ago) link

liquid television kicked ass

the first couple beavis and butthead clips really spoke to me

goole, Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:46 (twelve years ago) link

also there was the serial one with puppets about some kind of tough talking stripper/killer/biker chick? wow that could have been huge these days with all this zac snyder shit we're dealing with

goole, Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:47 (twelve years ago) link

I really think about 75% of my antipathy towards living in the countryside is due to growing up 15 minutes outside of the perimeter that had access to cable

DJP, Thursday, 7 July 2011 15:49 (twelve years ago) link

do we prefer the early Aeon Fluxes -- where she always ended up a splat -- or the Aeon Fluxes with something resembling a plot?!?

Notes

A deleted scene shows the woman Trevor was kissing while Æon was falling slamming a door between her pelvic area repeatedly.

got tongue bit off hardcore

How is this not the obvious winner?

apichathong song (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Thursday, 21 July 2011 17:03 (twelve years ago) link

might need to be drunk for this.
press release says it's both traditional and cutting edge -- AT THE SAME TIME.

"there was the serial one with puppets about some kind of tough talking stripper/killer/biker chick?"

this was called winter steele or something and it was pretty bad. watching it was like an extended version of that guard licking linda hamilton's face in T2.

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 21 July 2011 19:40 (twelve years ago) link

haha thx

wikipedia of course has extensive listings of every episode of liquid television

much trips down memory lane had by me

goole, Thursday, 21 July 2011 19:43 (twelve years ago) link

did you guys ever see the PEDRO ZAMORA tv movie?!

It was very surreal. There were actors playing Puck and Judd and shit and they kind of had scene-for-scene re-enactments of key pivotal plot points from the show but it was so surreal to see actors re-enacting reality TV but also being really, really bad actors. I can't explain it. You must rent this movie solely for the Real World shit.

wait what

apichathong song (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:35 (twelve years ago) link

god how can this thread keep on giving

apichathong song (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:35 (twelve years ago) link

DC: Do you still keep in touch with Dave Eggers (author of "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius")?

Judd Winick: No I don’t. I was quite surprised to find myself in his book, but Dave was very fair, very complementary, and very kind. He could have been cruel, and no one would have faulted him. I did send him a letter and a copy of Pedro and Me.

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:39 (twelve years ago) link

Judd is purple and Dave is yellow.

polyphonic, Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:42 (twelve years ago) link

wait but how did they meet in the first place? i feel like i'm missing a crucial part of the real world mythos here.

apichathong song (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Thursday, 21 July 2011 22:42 (twelve years ago) link

apparently he interviewed to be on the show? idk, i never read "a heartbreaking work..."
