this is essentially what you'll get on a more recent season
Despite growing up in a small town, Dustin considers himself "a city boy at heart".[9] Characterized by what MTV describes as a "boyish charm and southern gentleman demeanor", Dustin grew up with a bi-polar, drug addicted mom and an abusive stepfather. Although he was constantly shuttled between parents, relatives and various friends' houses, he worked hard to maintain relationships with his family,[14] though his brother Quay visits in Episode 8.[15] He worries as to whether he will develop bipolar disorder, which his mother suffers from.[5] He attended Lamar University,[13] and once lived in the house featured on Frat Pad, a live webcam site in which he and other men engage in sexual activities with one another,[16][17] though he stresses that he is straight and did this purely for a living, and he hopes to put that past behind him.[9] He further explains that his mother's Pentecostal beliefs precluded him from playing sports, and that not wanting to work in oil fields or sell drugs, he chose that line of work because of limited options.[15][18] An avid fan of racing,[10] his friends see him as a highly competitive young man whose good looks help him socialize with women.[14][13] Although he initially expresses an aversion to romance with his housemates in the premiere, he later begins a romantic relationship with Heather in that same episode,[9][16] which later becomes sexual,[5] but when she and the rest of the cast learn he has concealed a past in gay porn, Heather breaks up with him, and the others feel betrayed.[15]

basically the real world's new method follows the basic method of modern reality shows, i.e. find the most damaged people you possibly can and stick them in a house together

philly was the last season i watched, which was a great year because it brought us Karamo - i tried to do my part at the time to popularize "no karamo" as a substitute for no homo but it never took off

The episode was "Breaking Up" btw and he was discussing the end of a relationship with someone named Kathleen.

― goole, Wednesday, 6 July 2011 20:31 (twelve years ago) link
No HS Sex in the 90s was a series where each show had diff themes like "Breaking Up" or "I have HIV". The shows would consist of interviews/stories of like 5 or 6 people. Lou Barlow was one of the people profiled on the Breaking Up ep but they never mentioned that he was in a band. He was just some dude named Lou.

It was totally weird. I liked Sebadoh at that point and I remember being like WTF why is this happening and nobody is talking about the fact that that's him?! It has bothered me for a very long time. I am glad someone else has seen this. *daps Jess*
OMG GOOLE

is it just me or did the "twentysomethings" on mtv back in the day actually resemble real adults?
this may be a cultural problem, rather than mtv's

Oh btw the real sex "I have HIV" featured a blonde straight girl who got HIV from her live in boyfriend and I made me so paranoid that I didn't have sex for years and when I finally did I was totally convinced I was going to get AIDS and die immediately.
― \(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Wednesday, 6 July 2011 20:35 (twelve years ago) link
like i remember watching these shows and being like "oh, it's a bunch of people in their 20s livin their lives in the real world, that looks pretty cool and i can't wait to get there" and now everyone between the ages of 20 to 29 on mtv looks like a disgusting overgrown high school junior with a buy-ten-and-the-next-one's-free card at a tanning salon
― death to ilx, long live the frogbs (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Wednesday, 6 July 2011 20:36 (twelve years ago) link
part of it is that they were our age or older when the show started, and now they are all much much younger than us
― DJP, Wednesday, 6 July 2011 20:36 (twelve years ago) link
</andy rooney>
i think that's about how we used to be teenagers and aspired to be twentysomethings and then we got old and the reality left something to be desired
