on the evidence of this fight jeff is otm. you can't 'only beat what's in front of you.' people who came with this kind of game against joe louis got their hats handed to them. to take no risks, to care so little about people who paid to get in, is the mark of a shitty entertainer, shitty person, and shitty fighter. get the fuck out of the game if you didn't come to entertain

Both Klitschko brothers have a significantly better KO percentage than Louis.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 3 July 2011 00:34 (twelve years ago) link

I'm sure the Klitschkos could start a bum of the month club like Louis did and fight guys who throw themselves headlong into them, but instead they make title defenses against top 15 guys over and over and knock them out 95% of the time.

Was Tyson not an "entertainer" because he let guys like Mitch Green hug their way to wide decision losses?

Sometimes your opponent just doesn't want to fight.

to find a fight that awful you have to go way back

Jesus, how much heavyweight boxing have you watched? Awful heavyweight title fights happen ALL THE TIME. They always have.

How was this fight any different than, for example, Lewis-Tua?

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 3 July 2011 00:39 (twelve years ago) link

tonight one of this pair will be the unified Heavyweight champ. jesus.

not really, since Vitali has the other belt.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 3 July 2011 00:41 (twelve years ago) link

Lewis-Tua was also appalling, the h'weight division has sucked for years but honestly you're gonna defend Wlad's performance tonight? really?

completely unbelievable to me that anybody who gives 1/4 of a shit about boxing defends the mirthless Klitschkos, neither of whom ever saw a least-possible-effort points victory they weren't willing to defraud the public for. They're like batters with small strike zones getting as many bases on balls as possible and then getting acclaimed for their OBP. They suck ass, both of them. Their competition's worse, but

Sometimes your opponent just doesn't want to fight.

that's right. that's when you knock him the fuck out and get it over with instead of feeding him your weakest jabs all night.

Vitali Klitschko has the best KO percentage of any heavyweight champion in history.

not if you can't catch him.

Manny Pacquiao, one of the 10 most exciting fighters ever, just had a really boring fight because his opponent didn't want to fight. The same thing happened in his fight with Josh Clottey. No one raked him over the coals for it, and for good reason. It's not his responsibility to fight like a maniac because his opponent is running from him.

lol "heart." Where did Klitschko show a lack of heart? By not fighting like a heavyweight Aaron Pryor? You put Larry Holmes in the ring tonight with Haye and the fight is just as boring (although maybe Haye wouldn't have been so terrified and actually would have opened up).

You said we had to go "way back" to find a heavyweight title fight this bad, and it's just not true. Awful heavyweight title fights (fights worse than this one!) have been happening ever since the division was created. Tyson-Green, Tyson-Smith, Lewis-Tua, Ali-Young (a fight that made tonight's look like Gatti-Ward) etc.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 3 July 2011 03:17 (twelve years ago) link

point taken re: KO record, yr right. also yr right about "way back" being hyperbolic it's just this fight totally sucked and it pissed me off

Re: K's recordhow many future Hall of Famers do you count in it? Maybe Lennox Lewis, who beat him (stopped on a cut according the record, I didn't see that fight). Otherwise's knocked out 28 people who will be completely forgotten by history. You can say that that's not his fault, and you'll be right, but you can't argue that his KO % is much to speak about; do you think Frazier, Holmes, Foreman, Ali, Norton, Shavers, Tyson, Holyfield up 'til about '96, Coetzee, Qawi, or Pinklon Thomas wouldn't have racked up a similar percentage against the likes of Ross Purrity, Orlin Norris, and Albert Sosnowski? I know that sounds like cherry-picking the nobodies but seriously man...who has this guy beat that you rate at all?

xp Pacquiao v. Mosley was the battle of the midway compared to Klistschko/Haye

Where did Klitschko show a lack of heart?

by hardly throwing any punches and coasting to an easy decision?

I'm not saying Vitali is one of the greatest heavyweights of all time, I'm saying he's not interested in coasting to points decisions. He methodically breaks people down and KOs them.

Wladimir is more cautious than his brother because he has stamina problems and a glass chin.

Lack of heart is quitting or giving up, not banking round after round on points. By that logic Marco Antonio Barrera showed a lack of heart vs. Hamed, for example.

No it's a crazy war. Other than Golota-Bowe 2 it's probably the only fight where superheavyweights really slugged it out at an elite level.

Lara vs. Williams tonight, I think Williams's first after the savage KO by Martinez?

love in a grain elevator (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Saturday, 9 July 2011 18:24 (twelve years ago) link

anybody watching Antillon-Rios right now? looks like the better choice than Williams-Lara. Cintron looked sluggish and uninspired in the undercard fight, lost by unanimous decision.
