Stop talking about secret groups, you exclusionists.

It is so lovely outside today and those poor, neglected kitties are so sweet.

Wishing I could truly have a sick day instead of work to do.

I hate the last few minutes of work of a friday. They seem to last forever.

treefell, Friday, 12 October 2007 14:54 (sixteen years ago) link

My work friend just emailed me for pizza/shopping at lunch and now I am sad that I am at home. :( But sitting outside petting the kitties was nice. Might do it again here soon.

Turning on the TV now. This thread will become nothing but my boring ramblings b/c you've all headed off.

You will be drunk/asleep before my weekend even starts!

Misery, Friday, 12 October 2007 14:57 (sixteen years ago) link

I've got another hour to "work". So bored I clicked on a link to a dissensus thread.

onimo, Friday, 12 October 2007 15:01 (sixteen years ago) link

I have teh phear of dissensus.

kv_nol, Friday, 12 October 2007 15:06 (sixteen years ago) link

It's grime.

note to self: strikethrough on lower case 'e' doesn't really work.

I admit that I haven't read all the posts because I am v. lazy this morning, but hey y'all.

I may be adopting a 10 year old dog from the pound this weekend, if I can get around the "we need a letter from your landlord" thing because (a) he's a douche, and (b) he's out of the country for 4 months. The dog's name is Lucky, and his family turned him in for "aggression", but everyone at the pound who's seen him says no way, they just wanted to ditch their dog. Even if I can't keep him (not sure about my two dogs), I figure I can find a home for him, or give him to a no-kill shelter. Who's going to adopt a 10 year old pit? Hardly anyone will adopt them around here if they aren't puppies, and an older dog should not have to live his last days in the pound because some dickface decided it was inconvenient to have a dog now. Even if he only lives another 6 months, I want him to know he was loved. I'm a sap. I just hope the people at the pound will understand that I can't get them a letter, and won't let Lucky be put to sleep for lack of one when I'm ready and willing to love him, you know?

Also, after all the accent conversation, I would like please one (1) Irish or Scottish boyfriend kthxbye.

luna, Friday, 12 October 2007 15:49 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't know what kind of shelter they are but the one we adopt from are pretty serious about the letters. Maybe if you explained the situation to them they could hold him? What about a pit foster group? They often save dogs are unadoptable and maybe you could go through them to get him.

Either way it sounds like a great plan. I would never have Foxy if she hadn't of been placed on our doorstep. I know puppies and kittens are waay more likely to find homes than older pets. I always go for the seniors. That's why we got Wheezy. She had been there for months and was really probably only still alive b/c the shelter was remarkably not that full.

She is pretty mean though and I wonder now if that's why she was given up. But we'd never take her back. We got her for life.

Misery, Friday, 12 October 2007 15:53 (sixteen years ago) link

I told myself if I finished work I could go to Target. But fuck it, I'm going now. I need to buy a wedding present for tommorow and use a $10 off of $100 coupon. I will have no trouble making up the rest of that $100.

Good thing my comfort shopping only happens at cheap stores.

Misery, Friday, 12 October 2007 15:56 (sixteen years ago) link

I have a feeling they're serious, too, but we'll see. It doesn't say it anywhere on their website, and I have to be "interviewed" by them because he's a pit, so maybe that will work once they find out I already have two.

This r him: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/lunacee/Lucky.jpg

luna, Friday, 12 October 2007 15:59 (sixteen years ago) link

Okay he is cuet. Fuck the letter, I'll take him!

kv_nol, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:01 (sixteen years ago) link

I know, isn't he? That doesn't look like a dog full of hate and aggression to me.

luna, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:02 (sixteen years ago) link

It really incenses me when people dump old dogs at the pound.

luna, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:03 (sixteen years ago) link

Aww, poor guy. Yeah I hope it works out. I'm sure he'd love to be loved. :)

Do they know how he'd get along with other dogs though?

Misery, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:03 (sixteen years ago) link

They said he seems to be good with other dogs, doesn't show aggression towards them. They're going to do the formal temperament testing once I actually go to see him, but the three people I spoke to seemed to think he'd pass with flying colors, so I guess we'll see.

He's not neutered yet, so if they let me adopt him, they'll neuter him the next day, and then I can pick him up after. (Which sort of sucks because this place is 70 miles away, but whatever, I can afford $37 and a tank of gas to save a life).

luna, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:07 (sixteen years ago) link

this place is 70 miles

!!! That adoption price is cheap though. It's $75 here.

How did you find him?

Misery, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Poor fellah, finds love then loses the way to express it :(

kv_nol, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:09 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, it's $90 at the city pound, but much less at county ones because of the "save a life" program they're running. One pet per household, dogs $37, cats $32.

I found him online - I occasionally look through the pound websites, just because.

luna, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Poor fellah, finds love then loses the way to express it :(

Yeah, I know. I feel bad for him, but the pounds won't release an animal unless it's been spayed or neutered. I didn't think about it with Zero because he was only 3 months old, but this guy's had his yambag for 10 years now, he knows what's what!

luna, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Good luck Luna.

Esssh SO it's 20 past 5 on a Friday and I COOOOULD draft up the email and final contract and issue to the person for Monday OR I could take work home and do it there over the weekend with pop music to listen to and cakes to eat, yeah, I think imma gonna be doing that because it's ujst not happening here...

Sarah, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Go home and work, def.

yambag

haha, I've never heard this.

not releasing them without being fixed is a good thing. If those morans across the street would have spayed their cats we wouldn't be pouring so much of our money and time into taking care of the cats they abandoned.

Misery, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:24 (sixteen years ago) link

My friend Todd came up with it a few years back and it always makes me laugh because it's so crude. This may be the first time I've ever used it myself.

luna, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:26 (sixteen years ago) link

yambag

Yowza! Great word.

Right, have a good weekend everyone. Remember to spay and neuter your friendspets!

kv_nol, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Yes, Sarah, you should definitely go home. I'm trying to think of reasons to leave early today myself.

Have a good one, kv!

luna, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:34 (sixteen years ago) link

huh. i've got to work up another 40 minutes on my clock.

and i'm too busy to spend it here. friday sucks.

I have 8 hours to go. Woo. Hoo.

luna, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:37 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm willing to guess my shift started before yours, if this is a contest [-|

darraghmac, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:38 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm going shopping.

Maybe I'll finish my work later when accompanied by some beers.

Misery, Friday, 12 October 2007 16:39 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, I'm still working. Also I would still be posting even if I wasn't working.

My adoption policy with animals seems to be all based around the story. So I usually end up with the fag ends of animals that were left out in the cold because they were a bit mental. As a result I have one dog who picked up some kind of parasite or something while living rough and can only eat special expensive food or he'll die, one dog who won't pee or poop while he's on the lead and can't be left in the back garden or he howls the neighbourhood down, one cat who pees on any soft furnishings he encounters (although he's a bit better now) and one beautiful, flaw-free cat (except for the ringworm and weepy eye) who I managed to get in there and adopt before she was old enough to be fucked up by anyone else.

I admire you, Luna, for your policy towards bull breeds. They passed a law here that people who live in public housing can't keep them anymore. It's really obnoxious.

accentmonkey, Friday, 12 October 2007 17:05 (sixteen years ago) link

haha - nope, it's not!

I didn't want a pit when I went to the pound the first time to get a puppy, but my husband was so sad that this wee little guy's sister was getting adopted and he wasn't that I couldn't say no to the little beggar, and it turned out so well that I got another, and now I'm one of the "deed, not breed" people. It makes me so sad how many pitties are in the pound because people don't understand that not all of them are BAD DOGS.

Could you have resisted this? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/lunacee/babyzero.jpg

luna, Friday, 12 October 2007 17:12 (sixteen years ago) link

No. I certainly could not.

accentmonkey, Friday, 12 October 2007 18:39 (sixteen years ago) link

Trish, you shunned me for cat-related illness. It sounds like you have more trouble than me.

Misery, Friday, 12 October 2007 19:00 (sixteen years ago) link

I know this is shameless but I'm bored, so screw it:

Me babbling on about a cool exhibition at the SF MOMA

Michael White, Friday, 12 October 2007 19:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Trish, you shunned me for cat-related illness. It sounds like you have more trouble than me.

No way! Mine are all a bit screwy, but they're happy and good-tempered.

I am sorry I shunned you because of the ringworm. I was shallow. Like that chick in Cyrano de Bergerac.

accentmonkey, Friday, 12 October 2007 19:27 (sixteen years ago) link

Um, I dn't mean to suggest that anyone here doesn't have happy, well-adjusted animals. I'm just saying that I know people whose animals are kind of bad-tempered.

accentmonkey, Friday, 12 October 2007 19:28 (sixteen years ago) link

Cool exhibition, MW. Maybe I should send Mister M to it.

accentmonkey, Friday, 12 October 2007 19:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Only Wheezy is bad-tempered. All myy rest are lovely.

Misery, Friday, 12 October 2007 19:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Hi everybody! I've been missing you! Trying to learn Portuguese from an immersion program, so when I sit at the computer I make myself just do that. It's kicking my ass.

I tried to adopt a pit/brittany a while ago. I had her for a week and ended up taking her back to the shelter because she was going to kill my old boy dog Puck. It would start out rough-and-tumble fun and morph into something else. A low rumbly growl as she went for his throat. It seemed out of her control. She was an absoluted sweetie, except for the gonna-kill-Puck thing. I cried and cried. I had even re-named her, from Lucky to Lucy. She was a girl, fer chrissakes. When I took her back they told me that she had come from a family of problem dogsā€”her mother was a repeat cat-killer. Thanks for the full disclosure, guys.

Beth Parker, Friday, 12 October 2007 23:30 (sixteen years ago) link

hi everyone i r drunk and going to bed and have only skimmed thred.

Well done luna on saving dog lives. I wish I wasn't allergic coz I love dogs. I'm going to see my Staffie-in-law Floyd tomorrow and he's going to make me sneeze but he's great and is worth popping a coupla Piriton for.

Hi dere Beth long time no read.
Shame about dog nearly being killer dog :(
Good luck with Portuguese (I copied and pasted that or I'd have been typing all night) - we know a Portuguese/Scottish couple who decided that Mum would always/mostly speak Portuguese to their wee girl and Dad would always/mostly speak English and it's amazing to hear her switch between languages like it's the most natural thing in the world. They sometimes speak to each other in the secret language of French but their daughter has started picking that up too. I think she's only about 6 years old and has two and a bit languages in the bank already.

I'm rambling. I'm going to bed.

Meant to mention: teh_kit posted on ILG the other day so he's not dead, which is good.

onimo, Saturday, 13 October 2007 00:34 (sixteen years ago) link

I am rapidly becoming fed up with ILx again, thanks y'all for being so lovely.

luna, Saturday, 13 October 2007 01:46 (sixteen years ago) link

this is a HUGE xpost, but thanks aldo - i think you're right; there is much greater risk in not doing this big thing. i figure i'm young enough, free enough to give this a go. i don't have any financial or employment commitments, i haven't started my career, i haven't travelled. worse case scenario: we don't have any physical chemistry - but there's an utterly amazing friendship there which i know will survive. if it doesn't work i can always move on. it's not like i haven't had my heart broked before, so i'll survive this no matter what happens.

I have just got up, after SingStarring last night (and becoming the EVERYONE'S WOES REPOSITORY again, but thta's a whole other story) and have to meet GB on the rough cider boat in an hour and a half. Bleh.

Dying this morning. Swallowed just short of an OD of painkillers to straighten me out. I'll try to wrestle a pint down during the football. You need text updates Al?

onimo, Saturday, 13 October 2007 11:47 (sixteen years ago) link

I promised to do a bucket of arrabbiata for the party I'm going to later. Never make promises to do anything the day after a booze session.

I have no basil :(

onimo, Saturday, 13 October 2007 11:49 (sixteen years ago) link

I'll be watching the footie on my phone, so I'm OK without updates. I am also NOT TEMPTING FATE.

I feel like shite. And I have to leave the house in half an hour.

aldo, Saturday, 13 October 2007 12:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Great to see you back Beth. I still have your card. Somewhere. I am a VERY BAD PERSON and might just buy another card and send it quickly. Sorry.

Meant to mention: teh_kit posted on ILG the other day so he's not dead, which is good.

He's also on facebook!

I'll be watching the footie on my phone

Wow!

kv_nol, Saturday, 13 October 2007 12:25 (sixteen years ago) link

"watching" = having the Orange commentary on (which is brilliant btw, they're right sarcastic bastards) and hitting refresh.

Right, I am now off out to attempt to drink rough cider.

aldo, Saturday, 13 October 2007 12:39 (sixteen years ago) link

That sounds pretty sweet! I don't think we have anything like that here!

Enjoy cider. I'm off out to watch rugby.

I'm, um, doing the work that YOU PEOPLE kept me from during the week, and then going to the theatre later on.
