Arthur wanted to be popular, so "fuckin EVERYONE loves him now" is nice to hear, but in reality overstated. I wish it were the case. Great to hear Japan is on point as they do order a TON (at least for my tiny world) of all AR titles from me. Regarding Amazon, I have no idea why they have the date wrong, but I urge you to order it from either Dusty Groove or Forced Exposure. They should have the vinyl also. Vinyl sleeve has a different picture of Arthur than the CD. The two I chose are from a dozen plus images taken by Arthur's father in Iowa. Arthur wanted a bunch of pictures taken of himself in front of various tractors for a short-lived project, The Singing Tractors. It seemed to fit the Springfield music so I went with them. Continued thanks for the positive responses.

It's certainly getting there. I have vague fears of a backlash, hipsters're untrustworthy. He's so good and so special tho, I hope he ends up having the samew kind of moreorless permanent cache as someone like Eno. BUT anyway I got my copy of "First Thought Best Thought" today and God, it's just gorgeous. "Instrumentals Vol 1" is almost kinda my new fav AR thing. That first track alone! And then the developments, ahhh. And thank you lots for making it available on vinyl! Should be getting the "Springfield" dbl12 next week.

Fantastic, man, good luck w/ it. How much archival footage is there?

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 5 October 2006 22:38 (seventeen years ago) link

TBD- I have provided quite a bit, and the filmmaker is speaking with others and reviewing possibilies. The funniest thing I found was a video Walter Gibbons made for "Let's Go Swimming". It's all pause and paste, made on a VHS. Lots of water, fish and all things aquatic. Totally raw.

Just happened to hear of that reissue by running a semi-regular Google search for it! So fucking cool.

"Song IV" from 'Zummo with an X' is fucking amazing, yet another astonishing side of Russell--a real fusion of a lot of his styles. I ordered the full album, which I've never heard--not sure if Arthur's on any other tracks, but it looks compelling regardless.

Quick note, difficult to choose esp cos the more I listen to it the more his whole CORPUS seems like cut from the same bigass cloth but "You Did the Right Thing When You Put that Skylight in" MIGHT just be my fav AR track now (latest in long line tho)

I'll be ordering that up as well. I would just like to say that I think the re-issue job West End has been doing on their stuff is great, and they are some of the friendliest folks to deal with. They already re-issued 'Is It All Over My Face' as well.

I scoured the web to find audio samples of that Peter Zummo album, and I finally found this page with an episode of WNYC's "New Sounds" from 1990 that featured "Song IV" (start listening at about 36:30):

Ernest P. (ernestp), Saturday, 27 January 2007 02:06 (seventeen years ago) link

The Zummo is very much worth buying, if you're hesitant. Primarily for 'Song IV,' but other tracks are interesting.

Arthur being used for a mobile phone advertisment? Crazy! But hey, if it subsidises Audika and allows Mr. Knutson to put out more of Arthur's music, then better him than Moby.

I.M. (I.M.), Saturday, 27 January 2007 02:12 (seventeen years ago) link

it's orange mountain music who will be getting the cash. and hopefully arthur's nearest and dearest too.

i disagree, the A side is an awful tangle of enervating post-Glass experiments, while the B side is ok for the breathy Russell and tabla workout, but it doesn't amount to much. i worked my ass off trying to find this record and it hit my sell pile pretty quickly.

yr crazy! 'song iv' is aural xtc.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Saturday, 27 January 2007 03:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, 'Song IV' is top 10 Arthur-involved cuts, for me.

I.M. (I.M.), Saturday, 27 January 2007 06:18 (seventeen years ago) link

I assume the person who sourced the Arthur Russell is the same person who sourced "Diamond Day". I wonder if Campaign has an adland's trendiest exec award.

I've found it hard to rekindle my interest in this man's music. World of Echo blew my mind when it came out and I became attached to a few tracks on that especially. Then later in college that posthumous album came out...Another Thought I think it was called. It was pleasant, but left no lasting marks. His forays into dance music haven't wowed me either. Yet I continue to feel as if I must have left something behind and need to do something about it.

listening to the 19 minute version of "Answers Me" which forms the sountrack to "Terrace of Unintelligibility" - the 19 minute film that Phil Niblock made that was on the DVD of the limited reissue of "World of Echo". so deep and dark - an unequivocal masterpiece. shall i upload? i think it's only exists on that DVD which is out of print.
