That sucks. As to the O.P.'s question, it seems obvious he's starting in L.A., being a Jimmy Webb song and all.

l.a. to phoenix is just a few hours, though.

:( i saw him last year at our local horrendously cheesy casino. i didn't have high expectations but i wanted to see him because <3 and i was very glad i did; his guitar playing was really great and he sang a lot better than i expected, and he had a good band and he talked with fine sensibility about music and he was generous and sincere in his praise of his peers. he was a little confused at times though so this news is not completely surprising. now i'm even gladder i took the opportunity and i hope he's at peace.

Glen was starting from Hollywood.

Want to reiterate that he is indeed still fantastic live - the show i saw was with an orchestra and he came out to Wichita Lineman - almost cried it was so good. And also people should definitely check out that Meet Glen Campbell album. Dude even made me like a U2 song.

glen campbell does not get the props from musicophiles that he deserves.

Amen to that. Love him. All the best, Glen.

He gets plenty of props! Musicophiles who don't respect are not worth anyone's time. My only beef is that many young people don't know about Glen Campbell, he's not being sold to them as a canonical artist. But he's a pop country and some people will never respect that.

Ooh, he does!

(ah you just said that. OK, still posting this)

Would suggest sending him one of our many "Wichita Lineman" threads to show how much we love him but that's probably not appropriate.

My one friend in the "music biz" told me about this a couple years ago, so sadly it's probably progressed pretty far by now.

He's got one of the greatest voices in the history of music. My favorite has always been this:

some of his odder, more idiosyncratic moves--like having a celtic tune on each of his albums for a while

Have a dim memory of seeing him, on some chat show or something, whipping out a set of bagpipes and tootling away on them (in celebration of his "Scottish heritage").

It's a fairly scottish name, tbf

Mark G, Friday, 24 June 2011 11:21 (twelve years ago) link

Fo sure, and at least he wasn't claiming to be Irish, like most of them do.

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Friday, 24 June 2011 11:22 (twelve years ago) link

Of ocurse, being a supremely talented geezer, he could actually play the pipes!

R. Stornoway (Tom D.), Friday, 24 June 2011 11:23 (twelve years ago) link

He is really talented. I believe he was one of the only if not the only guys in the Wrecking Crew/Shindig crowd who couldn't really read music, but the stuff he came up with was so good they didn't care.

Sad, yes. I still remember his variety show from the early '70s, when everybody got their own variety show--I think I may have had one myself for a while. From Wikipedia: "With Campbell's session-work connections, he hosted major names in music on his show including: the Beatles (on film), David Gates and Bread, the Monkees, Neil Diamond, Linda Ronstadt, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Roger Miller and helped launch the careers of Anne Murray, Mel Tillis and Jerry Reed who were regulars on his Goodtime Hour program." Grammar aside, an impressive list.

Indeed, even Scott Walker had one

Has anyone noticed the similarity between Bennie Hill's "Ernie" and Scott's "Jackie" ?

Still, Glen Campbell, eh?

Which records were those? I was looking on AMG and couldn't find them.

Never though much about Glen Campbell until this last week...

Just finished watching the Wrecking Crew film a few days ago and previously had no idea how many classic records of the 60's he played on.. Then next day the story about his illness hit the news..

Today I bought a copy of Wichita Lineman LP for a euro, and i'm really enjoying it..

His version of These Days posted by Jamie upthread is breathtaking...

Yeah, pretty great. I think it's one of those indestructible songs, like "Only Love Can Break Your Heart."

Was thread about those types of songs once, but can't think of how to find it.

Sometimes a journey can be a state of mind. What if all his hits only happened in his mind? A possibly inconclusive Then Play Long piece.
