also, on john justens rolling documentary watch, i watched "jandek on corwood" and "B.I.K.E." tonight. they were both acceptable.

bike was of predominately local interest because it was (kind of) about the black label bike club, which started in MN, and had a couple of people i know in it. It also focused on the brooklyn black label bike club, for which i would like to take the opportunity to apologize on behalf of my fine city for starting the blbk, because most of those dudes seem to be complete douches.

Damn, Sara, I'm sorry. I had no cocktails last night either, only half of a beer. Although I should imbibe soon as MY MOTHER MIGHT COME TO MY HOUSE FOR XMAS. argh.

Life is too short. . .lately I've been in bed by seven with some huge, fluffy library book. LAME.

I read that as "Jandek on Torchwood" and got excited in a stupid and improbable way.

xxpost John's documentary watching habits make me feel really boring for still being in "catch up on the last 50 years of mainstream films" mode

ps guys, I wound up just drinking cocoa last night; not even one cocktail. Dammit.

oh so yeah tehresa the jandek doc was pretty much what i expected - i mean no revelations obv, although they had the cooperation of "corwood industries". lots of musos talking about why they thought jandek was great, some of which were very cool and interesting and some of which were def far too committed to the "i enjoy this because it is inherently difficult and you do not because you are stupid" fake high art crit. interesting to actually hear the 1985 phone interview that john trubee did.

all that aside, i liked it but it def didn't break any super new ground, and i am a casual jandek listener at best. prob the best thing about it was the examination of how people build their own little mythologies around him, purely because they have to invent a back story because having no story makes them uncomfortable, esp when some of them had really really bought into the "crazy recluse in a one room shack" thing that is so obv and patently untrue.

VISION QUEST TO KNOCK YOU UP (John Justen), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 17:57 (fifteen years ago) link

the B.I.K.E. doc was mostly (and i think somewhat unintentionally) a rambling story about how the filmmakers buddy who wants to join is a fucked up junkie trust fund loser. again, kind of fascinating in that respect but srsly, next time call the movie "my douchey friend Tony wants to join the BLBC but it doesn't work out so he spends a lot of time naked and crying and then makes a crappy fake bike club in defiance and no one cares - the end."

VISION QUEST TO KNOCK YOU UP (John Justen), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 18:02 (fifteen years ago) link

prob the best thing about it was the examination of how people build their own little mythologies around him

Why thank you, and you've played your part.

The documentary is interesting in light of him now becoming a much more public figure.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 18:35 (fifteen years ago) link

"much more public figure" still equals "Sara has no clue who you are all on about"

;_;

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 19:38 (fifteen years ago) link

I have seen that Jandek documentary but never really listened to him, so it was just okay. Enjoyed the Daniel Johnston one better.

Alright, it's settled. My brother, sister-in-law, their four kids, mother and stepfather are all coming down on xmas. We have no guest beds, a couple of air mattresses, a couch and an abundance of dog hair. this should be fun.

Not Everyone Can Be Tupac (Susan), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 19:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Daniel Johnston doc is one of the best music docs ive seen. also great, much to my surprise - that flaming lips one (fearless freaks?).

VISION QUEST TO KNOCK YOU UP (John Justen), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 19:54 (fifteen years ago) link

in general, the less music critics involved (sorry ned), and the less they actually talk about the music itself, the better the music doc will be IMHO. see also "the tale of two johns" about TMBG.

Look, it's been a rough day at work and if I want to take joy in the mental image of music critics getting BoxingHelena-ed as they try to talk about music, I believe that is my right.

I think John should be forced to take the biochem test, do tza's project, and write these interventions for breastfeeding assistance for new moms for me.

I'm sure the three of us would be happy to deal with the store for him in exchange.
