is "merci, herr marquis" some kind of allegory of french cultural independence from germany?

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 04:45 (nineteen years ago) link

and if so, where does the "doing doing doing doing doing" part fit in?

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 04:46 (nineteen years ago) link

"destroy: the ones we always hear, jacques dutronc..."

Fuck you, Dutronc is great!

If you can, seek out the double CD comp. of some 60's / 70's stuff; 'Completement Dutronc'.

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 14:22 (nineteen years ago) link

I like Dump's version of Dutronc's "Et Moi, Et Moi, Et Moi" better than Dutronc proper.

has anyone heard about Keren Ann? a friend of mine is raving about her but i can't find her records anywhere

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 15:10 (nineteen years ago) link

My wife has a Keren Ann record that is ok. It's called La Disparition. It's sort of an update on breezy '60s French pop in that it's got some Portishead beats on it.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 15:21 (nineteen years ago) link

that doesn't sound that hot

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 15:22 (nineteen years ago) link

It's so so. Supposedly her debut is better.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 15:24 (nineteen years ago) link

i think she's ok. not ye-ye though. i think i'm the only one who wrote about ye-ye on this thread, except whoever mentioned france gall in passing. nyeh-nyeh.

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 18:29 (nineteen years ago) link

notre dame/arnaud fleurent-didier/ema derton, all written and performed by the same guy except for the female voice obviously but it's all genius. like divine comedy in spots but much more theatrical and smart, totally fantastic. if the ema derton record ever comes out it will be one of the greatest things ever.

search the girls in the garage compilation vol. 10, esp. sylvie anne's "un tours dehors"

nine months pass...
Hmm, I have to back Sasha here and say Dutronc is tops! I'm also partial to most of the tracks on the Ultra Chicks compilations.
Jacqueline Taeib is superb, I am listening to her 'Complete Masterworks' right now.
Does anyone know much of the (60s) singer Tienou? I've heard one song, 'Pop Art', and it's astonishing.

As for Keren Ann, I have her debut CD and find it quite ordinary.
For contemporary French female singers, I'd recommend Fabienne Delsol and Camille.

melody, Thursday, 12 May 2005 14:25 (nineteen years ago) link

the Ultra Girls comps are very good for this, if you can find them.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 12 May 2005 20:37 (nineteen years ago) link

i sold those for gazillions of bucks but not before i copied them.

Jacqueline Taeib is superb, I am listening to her 'Complete Masterworks' right now.

do you have this on cd, melody? i went looking all over paris for a taeib collection, to no avail. i would love a copy. (i would type "hint, hint" here but that doesn't really qualify as a "hint.")

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 12 May 2005 20:42 (nineteen years ago) link

i really like the way taeib says "oh, j'ai sommeil...." on "sept heures du matin"

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 12 May 2005 20:42 (nineteen years ago) link

The two Atomic Cafe comps are a decent place to start.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 12 May 2005 20:45 (nineteen years ago) link

I would love to hear some more Taeib too, I adore 'Sept heures...'
I used to love all this YéYé stuff, I'll have to go rummaging.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 12 May 2005 21:00 (nineteen years ago) link

This thread is crazy! Destroy Dutronc? WTF? Brigitte Fontaine recommendations? Hello...buy everything you can find (though she's obviously not ye ye).

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 13 May 2005 04:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Ha! Agreed Walter!!

Amatuer(ist)... no I don't have it on CD yet unfortunately. I downloaded it from someone on soulseek, and, as with anything I download I have full intention to purchase it... if only I could find it! amazon.fr is out of stock.
http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00007B5VR/baragogo-21/402-6444607-3636956 I found one copy on gemm.com, but it says that lately the seller has not been filling his orders, so I wouldn't risk it.

I'm happy to pass on copied files to people who are keen to sample ... just let me know if this discussion board is friendly to filesharing talk before I say anymore.

Oh, and BTW the emusic.com link someone gave above has a lot of Brigitte Fontaine mp3s available. When you join for a free trial they give you 50 free mp3s... you could get 2 or 3 entire albums of hers that way.

melody, Friday, 13 May 2005 06:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I meant to also write that the link above for J. Taieb on amazon has samples of each song, for anyone who wants an idea of how her other songs sound. Has anyone heard the English version of "7 heures..."? I love it!

AND there's a seller on ebay who sells the Femmes de Paris compilation (new) which has many of the ye-ye girls mentioned above. I bought the Gentlemen De Paris comp. and was very happy with it - has Gainsbourg, Dutronc, Antoine, Edouard (who parodies Antoine), and the very expressive and highly entertaining Jacques Filh.

Another very cool ye-ye girl is Stella, whose songs made fun of the ye-ye scene and its adoption of American culture. Here's a recent interview with her: http://chachacharming.com/article.php?id=23

melody, Friday, 13 May 2005 06:14 (nineteen years ago) link

I would love a copy of that, melody, can I e-mail you?

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 13 May 2005 08:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Sure you can email me :)... anyone else feel free to as well.

zappi (joni), Friday, 13 May 2005 09:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Ha ha - I personally still don't like Dutronc, but I will search out this J. Taibe stuff!

marianna, Friday, 13 May 2005 12:29 (nineteen years ago) link

re. fontaine: she has some lesser records (including all of her most recent ones). the stuff that's good is very good, although deeply silly.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 13 May 2005 15:48 (nineteen years ago) link

i sold those (the Ultra Girls comps) for gazillions of bucks but not before i copied them.

I should sell mine then!

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 13 May 2005 22:50 (nineteen years ago) link

rather, they are the Ultra Chicks comps. they don't seem to go for so much these days. I guess I will have to love and cherish them until they go up in value again.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 13 May 2005 22:52 (nineteen years ago) link

If you're on soulseek, my username is histoire... browse my files and you'll find the Jacqueline Taeib compilation, and bits and pieces of ye-ye and such.

Here is the rather extraordinary Tienou song:

Anyone heard much Gillian Hills? I like her vocal style.

is soulseek available for MAC OS X?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 14 May 2005 13:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't know what's the problem with Ultra Chicks, great compilation, though there are some fillers obviously - 6 volumes...

Also good are the Pop-a-Paris compilations.

zeus, Saturday, 14 May 2005 14:01 (nineteen years ago) link

There is a version of soulseek for Mac - it's called solarseek. Google for that and you should find the relevant page. It does work from PC to Mac - I was downloading from someone on a Mac earlier today. :)

ilm-er or ex? sarah pedal's site covers this stuff pretty extensively.

i got this french pop compilation called "Pop Pop Pigalle" which I like very much. it has french covers of "leader of the pack" and "twist and shout". but i like these two songs, "douliou douliou st. tropez" by genevieve grad, and "le telephon" by nino ferrer.

phil-two (phil-two), Saturday, 14 May 2005 16:54 (nineteen years ago) link

soulseex is the best.

ANYWAY, I know she's not French - but Belgian - but I love Jo Lemaire. Very moody.

Keith - I love that blog... she was the one who posted the Tienou song that I fell in love with.

I'm amazed Alizee hasn't been mentioned on this thread yet. The whole of Gourmadises is great.

Nick H (Nick H), Saturday, 14 May 2005 18:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I've never had so many people downloading from me!
It would be nice to hear your thoughts on these tracks/albums/compilations, if you've had a chance to listen yet.

melody, Tuesday, 17 May 2005 05:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Jo Lemaire is indeed pretty great. It's weird that there hasn't been some overhyped revival around her.

anyone familiar with Sylvie Vartan? I know she had a long career, and even went disco in the end. (as we're all prone to, granted)

anyone who loves this stuff needs to make their way over to http://spikedcandy.blog-city.com/ NOW, where you can find the excellent Swinging Mademoiselle comps.

seven years pass...

and to start it off:
search: 60's michel polnareff, all of france gall, emperor norton's pop romantique compilation

destroy: the ones we always hear, jacques dutronc, 70's polnareff, ultra chicks comps (contain more misses than hits)

― marianna maclean

Jacques Dutronc song Le Responsable is amazing, definitely search. do not destroy.
