which one is going on right now? Manic Street Preachers?
― best way to stop identity theft is bad credit (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:48 (1 year ago) Permalink
Manics is going on right now. As noted, though, the big(?) 50s tracks poll which I opened for nominations a few weeks ago will head into the voting phase at the end of the month and probably roll out in mid-July. Probably wouldn't be a big deal if it goes head-to-head with a single artist poll, but definitely not more than one.
― Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:50 (1 year ago) Permalink
I think the 50s poll should be outside the continuity of these artist polls.

is this thread only for artists, cause I was going to do a sort of esoteric year-one which I thought would fit kind of well into this, I know someone else wanted to do a genre one (though I think larger-scoped ones don't really belong here)

Anyway, I definitely wouldn't use the move to LA as the cutoff point, like someone suggested because then you'd have to exclude classic tunes like aforementioned "Let's Get It On", all the singles from Innervisions, "Machine Gun", etc. And in the late 70s and 80s they still released great stuff like Diana Ross's disco tunes, "Sexual Healing", Rick James, DeBarge, etc.
So, I guess my opinion is that all Motown singles should be eligible.

Anyway, did we reach any consensus on whether the genre and label polls could/should have a different schedule from the artist polls?
― Tuomas, Thursday, 16 May 2013 06:57 (6 days ago) Permalink
I think it would kinda make sense to do them, with a longer schedule, concurrently with whatever artist polls are happening at the time. One at a time, of course -- Motown while New Order and Jay-Z were running wouldn't be the worst mix of polls at once.
― What makes a man start threads? (WilliamC), Thursday, 16 May 2013 12:56 (6 days ago) Permalink

Kinda like the idea of having just one poll rolling out at once.
― scintilla (seandalai), Thursday, 16 May 2013 13:46 (6 days ago) Permalink
Though I do think an extended nomination/discussion period would be good for disco, maybe for the labels too.

So, that's decided then?
― ArchCarrier, Thursday, 16 May 2013 13:56 (6 days ago) Permalink
I...guess?
BTW, I didn't mean that New Order, Jay-Z and Motown should all three run at once.
― What makes a man start threads? (WilliamC), Thursday, 16 May 2013 15:59 (6 days ago) Permalink
since we're sounding off, this focus group of one is cool with having genre polls run on a parallel track. They take longer and run differently and don't take away from the excitement of the artist polls imo.

just an FYI: when the Jay-Z poll comes up in a few weeks, I'm going to attempt to run a reboot of the Neptunes poll in parallel with it -- just seems to make sense, since a lot of the same people will vote in both, and I can piggyback the drive to get people to re-send their Neptunes ballots (if they already sent them to the original poll runner) to me while they're doing their Jay ballots, and have one voting period for both (obviously there'll be two separate results threads, but i'll try not to keep it moving in a timely fashion).

er scratch the "not" at the end there haha
I was thinking of bringing forward The Doors poll in tribute to Ray, if it can be fitted around the others. I assume New Order results are next week, and Motown voting opens next week too - I'm guessing Motown needs a couple of weeks' voting, which leaves a gap for The Doors e.g. if I open voting this weekend and countdown next weekend.
Any reason why that's not a good idea?

Was thinking the same thing this morning--just a list of Motown records (or a link to one) seems enough. Unlink a genre poll, there's not really a grey area: either a song was on Motown (or a subsidiary) or it wasn't.
― clemenza, Tuesday, May 14, 2013 7:16 PM (1 week ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink
This will be a serious grey area for Stax though - lots of stuff recorded in their studio and using their musicians and producers but released on other labels, etc.

― sword of (seandalai), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 16:06 (6 hours ago) Permalink
Stax and Volt, yes. But also a bunch of Atlantic Records soul albums are basically just Stax albums in different wrapping. And I don't even know how many other artists came through the studios to record scattered singles and whatnot. Might be better just to limit it to things with a proper Stax or Volt insignia on them, and Atlantic releases that are certifiably Stax?
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 16:10 (6 hours ago) Permalink
yes, wasn't referring to subsidiary labels like Volt (which obv count as Stax) but rather, say, Wilson Pickett records released on Atlantic, even though they were recorded at Stax using the MGs house band, and written by Steve Cropper too
― and in his absence, she (Lee626), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 16:12 (6 hours ago) Permalink
co-written, that should be
― and in his absence, she (Lee626), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 16:14 (6 hours ago) Permalink
If something was on Atlantic only and not just distributed by them, I'd be inclined to exclude. I'm open to persuasion though.
― sword of (seandalai), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 16:26 (5 hours ago) Permalink
That doesn't seem like a grey area to me, Lee; whether or not Stax musicians were used, or wherever it was recorded, if the record wasn't on Stax or a label owned/controlled/distributed/whatever by Stax, it's something else and wouldn't qualify.
