what artist, if any, is worth doing an ILM tracks poll?

no!

they can be done in like, two days, apparently

I can't satisfactorily explain why but the possibility that people might sit down to vote on the entire recorded output of the Boo Radleys fills me with despair, dread, horror

i think the despair, dread, horror requires no explanation. i thought that was a joke to begin with :/

i still don't know the results of the hip-hop poll - obv i am assuming shawnna won

I can send you a quick message lex if you'd like to know what the top 100s ended up...my impression is the hip hop tracks poll ended up being one ILM's better polls. but no shawnna :(

eh not really

why are people surprised that a poll that required a knowledge of like 100 songs got more votes than a poll for an entire genre. I wouldn't be shocked if the Pavement poll would have more votes than an ALL-TIME INDIE ROCK poll, which sounds like a more frustrating list to compile

― da croupier, Thursday, June 16, 2011 10:13 AM (3 minutes ago) Bookmark

because a) nobody needs a comprehensive knowledge of a genre to have favorite songs from that genre and b) c'mon everybody has favorite rap songs, even gier.

Mr. John Scatman (some dude), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:22 (twelve years ago) link

yes, god forbid people might like to discuss artists other people don't care for.

are the naysayers aware that 50 or so people thoroughly enjoyed the Pavement poll, many saying that it had reignited their passion for the band and their music?

the Sandalled Vandal (dog latin), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:22 (twelve years ago) link

lex check yr fb, i sent you the hiphop poll winners

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:23 (twelve years ago) link

I dunno. Lex's point about having to know the whole work of an artist is pretty salient. There are bands I like but simply don't know in depth enough to vote. (Thinking about Bjork and PJ there - I know certain periods really well and the rest is a blank so I wouldn't want to bias a poll.)

"Would care enough to vote" is thin enough considering I couldn't even get excited enough to vote in the Blur poll, and that was a band I was obsessed with for many years... Care enough to run, would be, oh, let's see, probably only Aphex Twin and I wouldn't do that because I can't stand the majority of Aphex Twin fans enough to want them to have my email address. Ha!

Yeah, and I'm unbothered by Pave, (I like "Box elder", it's not considered the best one etc) but if you guys enjoyed it, well good!

Pavewank. I just wanted to say that. PAVEWANK.

Karen D. Tregaskin, Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:25 (twelve years ago) link

hey most of us who'd be enthusiastic about a Prince poll sure as hell don't own every Prince album (although i'd definitely be taking tips from the obsessives who can recommend the good stuff from his later periods)

Mr. John Scatman (some dude), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:25 (twelve years ago) link

we have this discussion all the time. we had it when poll threads got introduced, we had it when list threads started getting popular. stop fretting - it's a little craze, it lets those interested have fun, it's hopefully not offending anyone and if you don't like it, don't bother with it.

I'm in the category of people who'd have liked to have got involved in the hiphop poll, but for reasons of dilletantism, felt a bit reluctant. Wish I had now.

apart from the EOY one I basically never vote in polls here that ask me to sit down and compile a list, but yes this seems totally obvious to me

jaybat.co.ck (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:25 (twelve years ago) link

Actually, the results thread was the most entertaining thing about the Blur poll.

If you don't know all the PJHarv/Bjork, then the stuff that ends up in the final poll that you don't know, is going to get some praise and recommendation which could lead to those who don't know the particular track, seeking it out.

mm?

Mark G, Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:26 (twelve years ago) link

since when has ilm been "indie-centric"?

since always. that isn't a bad thing or a big deal per se and ILM is probably broader than most places. it is the natural effect of ILM based on how it came about and the people it's mostly made up of. i think it has moved away from that more over ten years tho so 90s Indie Band tracks polls do feel like a throwback (plus i figured they wouldn't actually get much interest so it just seemed like pointless cluttering but i could be wrong re turnout).

blueski, Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:27 (twelve years ago) link

da croupier, Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:28 (twelve years ago) link

where's the harm?

too many at one time, predictable results, bit depressing seeing new answers topped by threads reinforcing ILM's indie-centricity (based on the bands that get this treatment first)

― blueski, donderdag 16 juni 2011 16:10 (12 minutes ago) Bookmark

The Pavement poll that ended yesterday was a glorious run-down of tracks, a whole band's career, people going back in time not just returning to the music but also life. Presented in a great way by Johnny Fever, unpredictable outcome, fun was had by all. If you don't like Pavement that's tough then, sorry it makes you depressed seeing it top the 'new answers' list. But that poll and it's countdown really has been an ILM highlight for me, with a great turn-out and participation too. What more could you want?

...wow! (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:28 (twelve years ago) link

Thing is, there are artists I'd want to *watch* a top 50 of, so I could find out more.

Trying to think what artists I'd both care and be knowledgeable enough to participate. Without getting nailfiles at dawn over the Supremes or anything. Heck, I'd love to see a 60s Girlgroups poll, but that's a genre poll not an artist so I don't ever have to choose between the Crystals and the Ronettes.

Karen D. Tregaskin, Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:28 (twelve years ago) link

tbh I can rarely be arsed to actually vote in any of those send in a whole big ordered list type polls but I have no problem with other people doing them, or with reading the results threads if I have any passing interest in the band.

Hey maybe there should be a separate I Love Polls board!?!?!?!1

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:29 (twelve years ago) link

yeah but ballots cast by casual non-knowledgeable fans lead to that familiar ILM scourge: polls that are more predictable and less interesting as they head towards the top (<-though this may in fact be unavoidable)

best way to stop identity theft is bad credit (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:29 (twelve years ago) link

gotta say, i'm surprised the manics one is getting so much mileage, but then i'm not a huge huge fan.

i'm always surprised when people say ilm is overly indie-centric (whatever that means, uh-oh close that can'o worms) - i hear more people complaining about indie on here than actually discussing it.

the Sandalled Vandal (dog latin), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:30 (twelve years ago) link

that's how you know it's indie-centric

Consign x1000. I don't really care as long as ILM isn't suddenly full of loads of these things, even if polling every Oasis song or whatever is k-lame.

yeah - but not canon artists like prince or wu-tang clan (two examples of acts i basically love but don't have anywhere near the knowledge of to vote on). cuz you can get recommendations of canon artists anywhere, you know? probably right here, if you look at past threads on those artists.

everyone should be able to create whatever the hell poll they want, but if they all do it at once, it's gonna be a 'thing'

keep a strict time-limit and make a list of volunteers

well I took part in the hip-hop, blur, and pavement polls cos I'm really into all three. The hiphop def lead me to hearing some great stuff that I had blanked on (black moon, camp lo, smoothe da hustler) and the blur and pavement ones kinda gave me good vibes. Out of the list at the top The Cure is the one that I'd find hardest but best 'qualified' to take part in and the Prince one is the one that would be most helpful in identifying which stuff I should get acquainted with given that I haven't been paying attention to his stuff for a decade.

pandemic, Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:34 (twelve years ago) link

Matt DC that would be awesome

Mr. John Scatman (some dude), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:34 (twelve years ago) link

this poll is well on its way to accruing 100 new answers before the hour's over; go figure this would turn into a clusterfuck

best way to stop identity theft is bad credit (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:34 (twelve years ago) link

agree it should be a "one at a a time" thing, if it is a thing.

the Sandalled Vandal (dog latin), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:35 (twelve years ago) link

my vague metric for these things is "if this artist has a peak period of 3 or fewer albums that will dominate the top 20 songs then it's not really worth doing," which is totally the case for Pavement

Mr. John Scatman (some dude), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:35 (twelve years ago) link

I think 2 at a time wouldn't be too many.

Mr. Patrick Batman (WmC), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:36 (twelve years ago) link

I guess I could just go read my Aphex Twin: Pick Only 3 and put it into a spreadsheet to tabulate the most favoured tracks.

But I suppose anyone could do that with any POX thread and have the same fun.

Karen D. Tregaskin, Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:36 (twelve years ago) link

when that volunteer list is made, I'll do beach boys. (I don't have to go first.)

iatee, Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:37 (twelve years ago) link

Seems to me like there's a level of commitment required for one of these polls that I don't possess. I miss POXes!

Letsby Avenue (Tom D.), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:38 (twelve years ago) link

I enjoyed the pavement poll even though I didn't participate (mostly because I felt there was too much material I was unfamiliar with). it got me to listen to wowee zowee, which I had owned for several years but never really gave enough of a chance.

I wish there were polls like this for other bands I'm not overly familiar with, if only to incite me to dig deeper into their catalog.

i completely support vigorous unrelenting enforcement of 1 at a time but can we wait until after the MC Tunes results thread?

cloaca flocka flame (NickB), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:40 (twelve years ago) link

I think one at a time, and one nominations thread running at a time. Otherwise people will just go mad for polling ever-more niche interest bands in this fashion and clogging up New Answers. Very reticent to fully take the breaks off the nerdy listmaking juggernaut.

Matt DC, Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:40 (twelve years ago) link

LBI that's fair enough re the success of the Pavement poll. It's just the combination of numerous polls (not really interested in big ILM polls anymore) and focus on these kinds of bands irking me.
