there are only a few artists on this list i'd change that for tbh (jay-z, neptunes, timbaland)

after watching a Pavement poll get more voters than a poll of the entire genre of hip hop, attempting a Beyonce/DC poll would just be depressing tbh

joni mitchell and kate bush seem obvious choices. pj harvey too, but it always feels a bit odd doing massive retrospective projects when the artist is still so active (and still at their creative peak, so to speak, unlike eg timbaland).

jay and kast would be super fun. and peej/bush/madonna/joni as people have mentioned. wu maybe too discussed already on ilm. coltrane/prince would be the nuts. dr. dre only has two albums and i don't know if he has enough production classics to really do this... maybe an nwa members poll. just don't seem to care about the indie or canon rock choices - maybe bowie.
overall though, on a learning and interest basis - stevie.
my choice from who is missing from the poll: GIL SCOTT HERON

man wut? sb ilm.
There was a Pavement poll? Ugh.
But point taken. Thing is, the posters who love the stuff I'd love to see a top 50 of are precisely the ppl who would never participate in such a boring fanboy exercise as writing out ballots and spreadsheets.

no harm obviously, but -- and i've said this before so excuse me repeating myself -- a lot of these artists you could pretty easily whittle down to a regular poll thread of their 50 most beloved songs without all the fanfare. also elevating some indie band that was only together for a decade to the level of oh we need to rank half their catalog is just kinda ridic.

Prince or Timbo would probably be the most fun -- i'd probably get the most personal enjoyment out of a Sonic Youth one but as i've said it'd be nice to depart from the indie canon

ILX goes through these phases of liking certain kinds of discourse WWAAAAAYYYY too much for a period and then forgetting all about it.
I mean, I certainly prefer these kinds of polls, which tend to keep to 2 maybe 3 threads, easily ignored, to that weird hockey league thing it went through a couple of years back where you couldn't even load new answers for the 200 threads about, like, what was the best kind of sandwich. :-/

a lot of these artists you could pretty easily whittle down to a regular poll thread of their 50 most beloved songs without all the fanfare
the fanfare is all the fun - it's about the process, not the result, an excuse to get reacquainted with an old favourite that you might not have thought too much about recently, to share the craic with some like-minded people.
also complaining about a preponderance (hardly) of threads you have no interest in seems like the weakest first-world problem imaginable (speaking as someone who thought the plethora of rolling metal threads was RIDICULOUS)
― i love the smell of facepalm in the morning (ledge), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:13 (twelve years ago) link
why are people surprised that a poll that required a knowledge of like 100 songs got more votes than a poll for an entire genre. I wouldn't be shocked if the Pavement poll would have more votes than an ALL-TIME INDIE ROCK poll, which sounds like a more frustrating list to compile
― da croupier, Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:13 (twelve years ago) link
I partially didn't vote in the hip-hop poll because I didn't have time, but a large proportion of it was that I felt like my choices would be belittled and my voice dismissed by the group of regulars who dominate that genre on this board. So I'm not that surprised that the Pavement poll was more popular. Didn't vote in that one either, mind you, but I'm not a fan of the single-artist old-style polls.

the thing is to take part in this kind of exhaustive poll, you really need to know the ins and outs of an act's catalogue pretty well - which rules me out of most older "canon" acts bar a joni here or madonna there. i'd totally be up for björk (and would think there's definitely enough love for that to be viable) or tori amos (to whom ilm has pretty much been entirely resistent, bafflingly - surely the only artist for whom the tim finney stamp of approval has failed to work - we did album polls for her and garnered like 6 voters in each :( )

― Samuel (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:23 (twelve years ago) link
I dunno. Lex's point about having to know the whole work of an artist is pretty salient. There are bands I like but simply don't know in depth enough to vote. (Thinking about Bjork and PJ there - I know certain periods really well and the rest is a blank so I wouldn't want to bias a poll.)
"Would care enough to vote" is thin enough considering I couldn't even get excited enough to vote in the Blur poll, and that was a band I was obsessed with for many years... Care enough to run, would be, oh, let's see, probably only Aphex Twin and I wouldn't do that because I can't stand the majority of Aphex Twin fans enough to want them to have my email address. Ha!

we have this discussion all the time. we had it when poll threads got introduced, we had it when list threads started getting popular. stop fretting - it's a little craze, it lets those interested have fun, it's hopefully not offending anyone and if you don't like it, don't bother with it.
I'm in the category of people who'd have liked to have got involved in the hiphop poll, but for reasons of dilletantism, felt a bit reluctant. Wish I had now.

― jaybat.co.ck (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:25 (twelve years ago) link
Actually, the results thread was the most entertaining thing about the Blur poll.
If you don't know all the PJHarv/Bjork, then the stuff that ends up in the final poll that you don't know, is going to get some praise and recommendation which could lead to those who don't know the particular track, seeking it out.
mm?

since when has ilm been "indie-centric"?
since always. that isn't a bad thing or a big deal per se and ILM is probably broader than most places. it is the natural effect of ILM based on how it came about and the people it's mostly made up of. i think it has moved away from that more over ten years tho so 90s Indie Band tracks polls do feel like a throwback (plus i figured they wouldn't actually get much interest so it just seemed like pointless cluttering but i could be wrong re turnout).

or Sandy Denny. Her oeuvre is a sprawling mess filled with side projects, appearances on others' records, one-shot bands, incomplete works, etc., and that's before we even get to her scopious role in Fairport Convention's heyday. Which of course makes for a great ballot poll.
