One of these five:

On & On
Tyrone (live)
Didn't Cha Know?
Back In The Day (Puff)
Gone Baby, Don't Be Long

scissorlocks and the three bears (Eric H.), Thursday, 16 June 2011 04:24 (twelve years ago) link

Guess I don't have much time to deliberate. Decisions, decisions.

scissorlocks and the three bears (Eric H.), Thursday, 16 June 2011 04:24 (twelve years ago) link

didn't cha know vs gone baby vs bag lady (cheeba sack) vs window seat vs tyrone vs soldier

fuck idk... i'm gonna vote didn't cha know, tho could be soldier depending on how i'm feeling

J0rdan S., Thursday, 16 June 2011 04:40 (twelve years ago) link

y'all are underrating "Honey" imo

51 suggest gang (The Reverend), Thursday, 16 June 2011 06:59 (twelve years ago) link

maybe that's nothing new

51 suggest gang (The Reverend), Thursday, 16 June 2011 06:59 (twelve years ago) link

"honey" is amazing, yeah - i think all the singles off the last two albums work best as part of their parent albums though

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Thursday, 16 June 2011 07:02 (twelve years ago) link

most of her singles do!

51 suggest gang (The Reverend), Thursday, 16 June 2011 07:11 (twelve years ago) link

poll was inspired by hearing "Tyrone" on the radio recently and god it is just perfect, the way the audience is hearing the song for the first time and reacting to every line, and then is singing along by the 2nd chorus. that and Jodeci's "Lately" are probably the only live recordings that are R&B radio perennials, says a lot.

some dude, Thursday, 16 June 2011 11:39 (twelve years ago) link

Oh god, I've been putting this off because every time I look at the thread I want to vote for something else.

the fey bloggers are onto the zagat tweets (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 16 June 2011 13:24 (twelve years ago) link

for me this is "Otherside of the Game" vs "Healer"

anarcho-misogynist puppies (DJP), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:41 (twelve years ago) link

what a fucking astonishing stretch of songs, tho

anarcho-misogynist puppies (DJP), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:41 (twelve years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Thursday, 16 June 2011 23:01 (twelve years ago) link

Good spread.

Jump Up in the Air (Stay There) 4

Rilly tho?

51 suggest gang (The Reverend), Thursday, 16 June 2011 23:08 (twelve years ago) link

WTF

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 16 June 2011 23:10 (twelve years ago) link

i voted jump in the air. poll again in a month and my answer will change.

bnw, Thursday, 16 June 2011 23:13 (twelve years ago) link

I'll do a tiebreaker poll in a month

WHAT THE FUCK

HATE YOU ALL

Mr. John Scatman (some dude), Thursday, 16 June 2011 23:50 (twelve years ago) link

oh man
i would have voted 'didnt cha know' & broken the tie if i saw this thread earlier

also yeah eff 'jump'

arachno-misogynist (D-40), Thursday, 16 June 2011 23:55 (twelve years ago) link

and to think i added "jump" to the list from wikipedia as a halfhearted gesture towards completism

Mr. John Scatman (some dude), Thursday, 16 June 2011 23:56 (twelve years ago) link

oh well, its still better than 'love of my life'

arachno-misogynist (D-40), Thursday, 16 June 2011 23:59 (twelve years ago) link

lobotomized com verse aside i like that song -- cool production, sneakily catchy melody

Mr. John Scatman (some dude), Friday, 17 June 2011 00:00 (twelve years ago) link

i don't how the fuck you can have been alive in the late '90s and not have some serious love for the Baduizm singles and "Tyrone" though

Mr. John Scatman (some dude), Friday, 17 June 2011 00:01 (twelve years ago) link

"looking for cheese, that don't make her a hoodrat" is one of my favorite awful common lines

The Brainwasher, Friday, 17 June 2011 00:01 (twelve years ago) link

ha and the way she ad libs "rat" in the background

arachno-misogynist (D-40), Friday, 17 June 2011 00:04 (twelve years ago) link

too many options!

The Brainwasher, Friday, 17 June 2011 00:05 (twelve years ago) link

Yall better check out "Hydraulic Pump" by the P-Funk All-Stars if you love "Jump Up in the Air and Stay There" so much. All 4 of you, I mean. Source material for both "Jump Up" and the Coup's "5 Million Ways to Kill A CEO." Features both George Clinton AND Sly Stone (give it up for freebase cocaine). The line swiped by Badu was originally sung by ex-Spinners singer Phillipe Wynne, who collapsed and died while performing with P-Funk two years later. Anyway, bonkers song. Make sure it's the 12" version you're listening to, not the edit that appears on the Urban Dancefloor Guerillas album.

thewufs, Friday, 17 June 2011 00:06 (twelve years ago) link

Could be that those voting for "Jump" actually have familiarity with (and love for) "Hydraulic"? I didn't vote for it, but I'm amused at the results here. Thought I was seriously the only one on ILX who actually liked "Jump" better than "Window Seat."

Seriously, tho. Fuck the fact this poll didn't have 100 votes.

scissorlocks and the three bears (Eric H.), Friday, 17 June 2011 00:58 (twelve years ago) link

i probably should have voted "tyrone"--i put it on every mix i made for like five years--but i voted "cleva" bc i wore mama's gun out

horseshoe, Friday, 17 June 2011 01:11 (twelve years ago) link

surprised window seat got 0 -- im guessing thats just bcuz of burnout?

arachno-misogynist (D-40), Friday, 17 June 2011 01:33 (twelve years ago) link

"jump up in the air" IS great, but...

"jump up in the air" is really great, i don't begrudge it its position here, especially as its absence of the album means it'll probably end up relatively forgotten

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Friday, 17 June 2011 08:29 (twelve years ago) link

surprised that on & on only got 1 vote

just sayin, Friday, 17 June 2011 09:02 (twelve years ago) link

1!

Poll idea: On & On vs. ... & on

best way to stop identity theft is bad credit (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 18 June 2011 00:08 (twelve years ago) link

two years pass...

The overall number of votes on this poll dissapoints me. Also thought On & On was an iLM staple.

Moka, Friday, 18 April 2014 00:08 (ten years ago) link

Yep. If Nu AmErykah can top the half-decade poll, then this should've gotten at least 50 votes.

Cronk's Not Cronk (Eric H.), Friday, 18 April 2014 05:07 (ten years ago) link

"jump up in the air" should not have co-won this but i'm still annoyed it never got a proper release (or even a HQ mp3 out there)

lex pretend, Friday, 18 April 2014 08:09 (ten years ago) link

How are you supposed to only choose one. I would have been stuck between Danger, Get Munny and Soldier

jay., Friday, 18 April 2014 10:12 (ten years ago) link

For me, it would've been a contest between:

Didn't Cha Know
The Healer
Tyrone
Turn Me Away (Get MuNNY)
Cleva
Soldier
On & On
Back In The Day (Puff)
Gone Baby, Don't Be Long
Window Seat

Cronk's Not Cronk (Eric H.), Friday, 18 April 2014 10:22 (ten years ago) link

Good list.

Bag Lady. I once drunkenly attempted this song at karaoke. Unwise.

all the Baduizm singles are a must, "Next Lifetime" and "Other Side of the Game" are amazing

there isn't a song on this list (with badu as lead artist) that i don't consider essential

and yet thinking about badu singles still seems to barely scratch the surface of her discography

and yet thinking about badu singles still seems to barely scratch the surface of her discography

definitely. for me, she's an albums artist, inasmuch as if I hear a song of hers I want to hear the whole album, the context matters, the standard of material is dizzyingly high.

it definitely wasn't designed to be a pants pocket player (stevie), Friday, 18 April 2014 16:25 (ten years ago) link

You all better be around when the ballot poll I just volunteered to run kicks off in 3 years.

Cronk's Not Cronk (Eric H.), Friday, 18 April 2014 16:27 (ten years ago) link

my top 5 in some order are probably

tyrone, clevah, bag lady, window seat and next lifetime

shit, in 3 years we may even have another Badu album, if we're lucky
