when did mtv change from this into what it is now? was there a specific turning point?

i think the first one i watched was hawaii & that was already p trashy
i feel like it was probably a gradual process of figuring out what 'worked' & what didnt, also just generally ppl not caring/pretending to care abt shit anymore?
