ATLiens is great; I remember the massive gangsta rap fan I sat next to in HS band not liking Outkast bcz the "fish and grits" line in the chorus & "Ain't no thang but a chicken wang" but I never quite got that

if Rosa Parks makes it, then I'm gonna feel sorry for not nominating "Return of the G"

(I'll bet it's #24)

ATLiens is in my top 10.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 10 June 2011 15:16 (twelve years ago) link

i remember the first time i heard of Outkast was reading a review of that album and pronouncing it in my head as "at-lee-ens" for the longest time

some dude, Friday, 10 June 2011 15:20 (twelve years ago) link

Next one is about a girl.

Kurt Cobain, greatest rapper of the 90s

um...

This has actually been one of my favourite ILM polls ever. At some point in the early 2000s, I lost almost all of my residual ability to connect with hip hop (having followed it very closely from 1985 to 1989 in particular), and so this is providing an ideal re-entry point. I've been streaming every track in full, and there's been a wealth of goodness to discover, or to re-acquaint myself with.

pronouncing it in my head as "at-lee-ens" for the longest time

My brother said this recently. He's a big fan of The-Dream so i'm not sure how he didn't make the connection

Number None, Friday, 10 June 2011 15:27 (twelve years ago) link

gonna be pissed if the Biz gets shut out of both polls btw

Too $hort is the bigger disappointment imo.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 10 June 2011 15:30 (twelve years ago) link

How do you pronounce it then? Ay-tee-el-iens?

Ismael Klata, Friday, 10 June 2011 15:30 (twelve years ago) link

yup

low-rent black gangster nicknamed Bootsy (DJP), Friday, 10 June 2011 15:31 (twelve years ago) link

Agreed xps, this poll's great. Pity ahh had such trouble getting people enthused.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 10 June 2011 15:31 (twelve years ago) link

Too $hort is the bigger disappointment imo.

yeah and E-40, and Brand Nubian too (I'm assuming Humpty Dance is gonna place so I'll hold my tongue about Digital Underground - Shock G kinda already placed with that Luniz track anyway at least)

was thinking about the lack of Too $hort and figure it must be down to vote splitting. He doesn't really have an automatic canonical track apart from maybe Freaky Tales... but um, I voted for "Don't Fight the Feeling" in my top 10 iirc

Too $hort is the bigger disappointment imo.

Still holding out for Life Is.. getting high placement

buhlogna mindstate (Pillbox), Friday, 10 June 2011 15:36 (twelve years ago) link

xpost: I nearly didn't vote. Then I thought: no, if it falls to me to REPRESENT for the OLD SCHOOL, so be it, etc etc. So there was almost nothing in my ballot after 1993. I decided not to let this bother me.

(Still managed to underrate The Bridge Is Over and Strictly Business, though. Voted for both, but they should have been much higher in retrospect.)

mike t-diva, Friday, 10 June 2011 15:39 (twelve years ago) link

also where is THE SYMPHONY

re: Too $hort, agree about vote splitting, I put in for The Ghetto.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 10 June 2011 15:43 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i voted for "The Symphony" but i gave up a long time ago on it getting more votes than "Mr. Me Too" or whatever the fuck

some dude, Friday, 10 June 2011 15:44 (twelve years ago) link

Guessing Ugly Duckling will beat Jurassic 5 to the top spot today.

some dude, Friday, 10 June 2011 15:50 (twelve years ago) link

Thats my issue, not showing up on either. Always overlooked, that guy.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 10 June 2011 15:51 (twelve years ago) link

"I'm more troubled by the lack of Kool G Rap"

This is shameful but more understandable imo. Too $hort had the charisma and even some mainstream success, he's more of a household name.

Love Dont FIght The Feelin, was just listening to Top Down which is one of my favorite slaps.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 10 June 2011 15:55 (twelve years ago) link

Passin' Me By is great but that is WAY too high

yeah

some dude, Friday, 10 June 2011 15:57 (twelve years ago) link

it's pretty hard to hate on pharcyde...but i'm gonna go ahead and hate on pharcyde. i'm sick to death of this song and i never want to hear it agian. prefer soul flower remix. used to know a dude who got that album cover of bizarre ride tattooed on his arm

top billin' should've had literal top billin' but that's not a bad place for it to land

"used to know a dude who got that album cover of bizarre ride tattooed on his arm"

Thats just embarrassing, not even a good album cover.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Friday, 10 June 2011 16:03 (twelve years ago) link

why does no. 25 have more votes than no. 24?
