I don't want to speak for everyone who likes it and/or may have voted for it, but there's a reason it crossed over to the mainstream (not that Jay isn't mainstream already, but you know what I mean). It's got an insanely catchy hook and vintage Rubin production. Oldnicks like me are reminded of the early Def Jam days and RUN DMC when we hear it, and that warms the cockles of our beating hearts. The youngs (and those who almost exclusively listen to rap) find it corny and lame. I wouldn't and don't fault them for it, it's just generational.

That song is a massive stomper.

can anyone verify this? i don't remember that shit at all -- like as soon as "In Da Club" dropped in January it was on radio countdowns and then the album leaked not long before the Feb release

I know egotism is an essential part of rap, but the biggest reason I never really cared about Eminem is that all his songs (or at least the singles I've heard) seem to be about him as a celebrity. And the woes and worries of a celebrity are basically the most boring lyrical subject matter in pop music: who the hell can identify to that, except other celebrities?

Aside from the continuation of the storyline in "Kim", the best thing about "Stan" is the production touches, from the scribbling pencil sounds to the screaming and thumping in the trunk. It's really amazing to me that this was a huge mainstream single.

"Kim" is a much better song, though; real horror movie vibes from that and the student-made video for it Youtube is kind of amazing.
