I LOVE Tribe (and "Walk on the Wild Side") but Can I kick it is their most boring single.

kinda feeling this -- "Scenario" and "Award Tour" better place higher

Letters From Iwhiney Gima (some dude), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 22:04 (twelve years ago) link

this list is cool but reading this thread is boring

flopson, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 22:06 (twelve years ago) link

"ha" placing is awesome! hopefully it won't be the only non-wayne cash money

well i mean Wayne is on "Back That Azz Up" and "Bling Bling" -- it's not like a Big Tymers single is gonna place or anything

Letters From Iwhiney Gima (some dude), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 22:06 (twelve years ago) link

Needs more trolling flopson?

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 22:09 (twelve years ago) link

People calling Can I Kick It? boring need to get out of my face.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 22:09 (twelve years ago) link

it's more like what i was saying upthread about "Hypnotize" -- it's on the low end (no pun intended) of a very high spectrum

Letters From Iwhiney Gima (some dude), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 22:10 (twelve years ago) link

Agree ^

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 22:11 (twelve years ago) link

ya xp s_o_d

flopson, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 22:12 (twelve years ago) link

idk y but its not interesting to read abt how some ilm random never really got epmd or how "can i kick it" is only their third fav tribe single prefer it when ilm lists explode into flameouts abt whats corny & rly peel back the layers of self-hatred -- mb its just me & u guys are relaxin at work tho, im on summer vacation shouldnt even be anywhere near here

flopson, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 22:19 (twelve years ago) link

It should be noted that most of the people who usually lead to thread blow-ups aren't posting in this thread.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 22:21 (twelve years ago) link

come back whiney all is forgiven!

S'cool bro, I only cried a little (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 22:22 (twelve years ago) link

Get lex and Geir in here too while we're at it.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 22:22 (twelve years ago) link

thing about the first half of a poll is you can only get so pissed off because you don't know whether top 50 or whatever has the stuff you think it should

Letters From Iwhiney Gima (some dude), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 22:24 (twelve years ago) link

someone made the prescient comment on the albs poll that singles would be less contentious

I don't mind the goodtime vibe up in here

no serenade no fire brigade just a trypophobia (Edward III), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 22:41 (twelve years ago) link

gonna be interesting to see who placed on the albums poll but not on the tracks poll, I think

― S'cool bro, I only cried a little (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, June 8, 2011 4:47 PM (1 hour ago)

on a related note i'll be shocked and saddened if 50 gets shut out

positive rapper (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 22:41 (twelve years ago) link

eh, I won't

low-rent black gangster nicknamed Bootsy (DJP), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 22:44 (twelve years ago) link

I voted for one 50 track, but really low.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 22:44 (twelve years ago) link

And if I had a do over, he probably wouldn't have made it.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 22:45 (twelve years ago) link

conversely if say "Wanksta" ends up top 10 I renounce you all

low-rent black gangster nicknamed Bootsy (DJP), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 22:45 (twelve years ago) link

50 is very very important to his era, but not so much to the big picture (also my entire singles ballot was '80s and '90s, effectively before his career began)

Letters From Iwhiney Gima (some dude), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 22:47 (twelve years ago) link

#1 will be lucas with the lid off, calling it now

ciderpress, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 23:33 (twelve years ago) link

50 is awful

S'cool bro, I only cried a little (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 23:40 (twelve years ago) link

lebroner (D-40), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 23:46 (twelve years ago) link

ciderpress, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 23:47 (twelve years ago) link

dunno what would have given you that impression

S'cool bro, I only cried a little (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 23:50 (twelve years ago) link

also you are welcome

S'cool bro, I only cried a little (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 23:50 (twelve years ago) link

also that's not entirely true I remember hearing the first Smif-n-Wessun album, it was Black Moon I hadn't heard.

S'cool bro, I only cried a little (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 23:51 (twelve years ago) link

50 is under-appreciated btw. I like his music more now than I did in the mid 00s.

would have voted this if i didnt vote for only 20

lebroner (D-40), Thursday, 9 June 2011 00:01 (twelve years ago) link

I almost voted 'If I Can't'

It might have been the last one I cut out.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Thursday, 9 June 2011 00:04 (twelve years ago) link

that was my fav on grodt

lebroner (D-40), Thursday, 9 June 2011 00:07 (twelve years ago) link

will the revelation that dj quik produced the drums on 'in da club' resuscitate 50's rep w/ ilx

i remember when 'in da club' was just a leaked mp3 -- i played it like 20x in a row. the beat was incredible

of course, it became unavoidable for 3 years afterward, which sorta drove it into the ground, but still an exceptional song imo

lebroner (D-40), Thursday, 9 June 2011 00:08 (twelve years ago) link

that just makes me disappointed in quik, h8 those drums

51 Cent (some dude), Thursday, 9 June 2011 00:10 (twelve years ago) link

posts v much in character

lebroner (D-40), Thursday, 9 June 2011 00:11 (twelve years ago) link

those drums sound amazing btw

lebroner (D-40), Thursday, 9 June 2011 00:11 (twelve years ago) link

Ha, was just thinking about that Quik point and about In Da Club in general. Its definitely too ubiquitous for me to really appreciate anymore, but yah, sit and listen to it and you realize the greatness.

I went back and listened after the Quik revelation and you can totally hear it, no wonder I like(d) it so much, no wonder it springs like that.

How can you hate those drums?

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Thursday, 9 June 2011 00:13 (twelve years ago) link

i don't like the snare/clap kind of lurches and clomps and the kick just mirrors the string riff -- also texturally feels like the moment when 'expensive' Aftermath production started to resemble generic TV show music bed rap beats (xpost)

51 Cent (some dude), Thursday, 9 June 2011 00:15 (twelve years ago) link

That snare/clap is Quik's signature sound.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Thursday, 9 June 2011 00:18 (twelve years ago) link

which of his signature songs can it be heard on

51 Cent (some dude), Thursday, 9 June 2011 00:26 (twelve years ago) link

So many ways, let's get down, luv of my life.

Off the top, driving home now.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Thursday, 9 June 2011 00:43 (twelve years ago) link

We still party, I don't wanna party with you

Maybe not his "signature sound" but a technique/sound he uses pretty often.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Thursday, 9 June 2011 00:52 (twelve years ago) link

This was the peak of gunit production fuiud

lebroner (D-40), Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:45 (twelve years ago) link

o_O that isn't even the best beat on GRODT

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:46 (twelve years ago) link

serioulsy... beats from Poor Lil Rich, What Up Gangsta, Poppin Them Thangs, How We Do, On Fire >>> In Da Club beat

51 Cent (some dude), Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:49 (twelve years ago) link

yeah that's crazy deej

J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:50 (twelve years ago) link

it's an iconic beat but i don't think it's the best

J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 June 2011 02:51 (twelve years ago) link

I didn't mean this beat in particular, I was disagreeing w al saying this was the beginning if the end. But that said yall are way underrating it here bcuz it was overplayed

lebroner (D-40), Thursday, 9 June 2011 03:14 (twelve years ago) link

i didn't say it was the beginning of the end of anything, just that it was a point when the Dre/Aftermath sound kinda got too shiny and expensive for my taste -- obviously the G-Unit sound was just developing and merging with that into something new at that point

51 Cent (some dude), Thursday, 9 June 2011 03:17 (twelve years ago) link

Yah I mean I remember thinking this beat was easily the best on the record when it first leaked, before it was a single. I don't think that any more but I think we're def underrating it if u think poppin them things is better

lebroner (D-40), Thursday, 9 June 2011 03:30 (twelve years ago) link
