Special Ed! wtf

S'cool bro, I only cried a little (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 15:28 (twelve years ago) link

Both recorded for Spike Lee movie soundtracks iirc

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 15:29 (twelve years ago) link

damn, I am hitting like gangbusters today! Voted for jesus, bells, loot & crooklyn.

buhlogna mindstate (Pillbox), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 15:31 (twelve years ago) link

Wasn't my vote for Eric B & Rakim (Juice) or Coldcut (More Beats + Pieces) although I voted for the album. Talking of which, aren't all these laughably low placings actually down to simple old fashioned vote splitting rather than voter imbecility? Just a thought...

PG Harpy (Doran), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 15:36 (twelve years ago) link

yeah vote splitting is gonna hurt ppl w/ lotsa good singles I think

no serenade no fire brigade just a trypophobia (Edward III), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 15:46 (twelve years ago) link

So happy Jesus the Pimp made it--one of my original noms I wasn't sure would get any support.

Not a wack song so far. If we keep this up this might be the ILX poll GOAT. (Though a hoy hoy saying "i've genuinely just checked the top 100 and LOL" at the top makes me nervous.)

Parenthetical Grillz, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 15:58 (twelve years ago) link

Also, it's impossible to say whether or not something's too low until the rest of the list goes up. "The Show" and "Rock the Bells" are classics, but there's still plenty of classics out there.

(And it's not like poll results ever really make sense anyway.)

Parenthetical Grillz, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 16:01 (twelve years ago) link

I guess high placings for crossover singles like '99 Problems', 'Hip Hop' (Dead Prez), 'Get Yr Freak On' and some arguably 'cheese' platters like 'Push It', 'Jump Around' and 'It Takes Two' may be on the cards.

FWIW I like all of the above songs and voted for all of them bar House Of Pain and Salt n'Peppa.

PG Harpy (Doran), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 16:34 (twelve years ago) link

It just reflects there being 69 more awesome rap tracks, I'm hoping.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 16:39 (twelve years ago) link

I have real regrets in not voting for "It Takes Two"

early Run DMC live clips are some of the greatest things ever

S'cool bro, I only cried a little (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:16 (twelve years ago) link

my experience of rap was changed forever when I saw "rock box" on a video jukebox at an amusement park in NJ in '84, kinda crazy to think there are *4 years* between that and straight outta compton, in 4 years that shit went from the most groundbreakingest of shit to sounding old + tired #hiphoplife

CHALLOPS ALERT but I find Run DMC unbearably corny

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:20 (twelve years ago) link

^^^best two non rae verses on The W. And fucking amazing. Almost enough to make The W's filler disappear.

WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:22 (twelve years ago) link

Love Wu-Tang, love Isaac Hayes, but I've always found this overrated. If I want lachyrmose Ghostface I go for All That I Got Is You. If I want a Walk on By sample I go for Hood Took Me Under.

Strictly vote-splitting (DL), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:24 (twelve years ago) link

i LOVE rae's verse in this though. might start a thread called "rappers getting so emotional it kicks them off their flow"

Run DMC were corny. I mean, they wore Adidas without the laces and made a big deal about it. And their cadence was clunky even by 80s standards. BUT they were loveable little scamps.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:27 (twelve years ago) link

zach that track is just ghost & rza. no rae.

WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:31 (twelve years ago) link

Challop (?): In 1984, 99 Problems would've been a rap song but in 2004 it was a pop song. Maybe. I don't know. I didn't think about this very long before posting it.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:31 (twelve years ago) link

nice little rock-rap run

steady sbobbin (symsymsym), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:32 (twelve years ago) link

Was "99 Problems" a big pop hit or something? It only seems to have this weird cult around it on the internet tbh

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:32 (twelve years ago) link

can I just say how happy it makes me that the first post in the thread is in my top 10

WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:34 (twelve years ago) link

like I don't remember "99 Problems" being so ubiquitous when The Black Album dropped, it was all about "Dirt On Your Shoulder"
