Wonder how many different PE tracks will place. I could have voted for about a dozen but restricted myself to two.

We need to talk about Bevan (DL), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 16:17 (twelve years ago) link

HERE IT IS! BAM!! That fucking siren! Oh Boy I love this track.

PE - tune. Didn't vote for any in singles because I voted for four albums.

CHALLOPS

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 16:23 (twelve years ago) link

Baseheads is too low prob, but the PE votes are bound to be splintered all over the place.

this was the first PE track I ever heard - age 10 or ll. I really did not know what to make of it for a while, but the video was in constant rotation on Yo! MTV Raps for a looong time & the imagery made quite an impression, enough so that, when I heard Black Steel for the first time, I decided to take a chance on buying Nation of Millions, from the Columbia House tape club almost certainly, the first rap album I ever bought. Now Baseheads if prob #2 or #3 on the album for me.

Hey, I'm surprised at how many of these are right up there for me so far, and I'm only a casual hiphop fan and didn't vote.

Song is so self-deprecating.

WHO THE FUCK READS THE (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 7 June 2011 16:39 (twelve years ago) link

I think ODB was the first time when one of "my" artists died unexpectedly. Certainly I'd never been quite as shocked to hear about a musician's death before; suddenly I could understand how those Nirvana fan friends of mine had felt in 1994.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 7 June 2011 16:39 (twelve years ago) link

i couldn't decide whether to vote for SOD or ..Storytellin, so I went w/ an Atliens track & put Aquemini way up on my albums ballot.

25 of my Old School 50 made it to the 100, so I'm happy. My "criminally overlooked" list is topped by:

Stetsasonic - Talking All That Jazz
Big Daddy Kane - Raw
Young MC - Know How

Congrats on the birth of Lil Dee Ell!

Above The Law - 'Murder Rap'

"Mind's Playing Tricks" is a great #1. Geto Boys (or at least that single) have really grown in stature over the years. If people on a message board in 1996 were constructing a top 100, you'd have been flamed stenuously for suggesting that MPT was better than "My Philosophy" "Ain't No Half Steppin'" or "Bring the Noise". They were a notch or two above ICP or whatever at that point. In fact, I remember just saying that Scarface was a great MC on rec.hip-hop and get tons of shit for it.

The rise of the South (and Texas) and the respect for Scarface's solo career, as well as the internet fetishism over Rap-a-Lot, have made Geto Boys acceptable.

President Keyes, Sunday, 12 June 2011 02:58 (twelve years ago) link

Right on; "Mind Playing Tracks on Me" is one of the most--if not THE most--forlorn-sounding songs I've ever heard in my entire life...

107. Nas - It Ain't Hard to Tell 4 120

I guess this album has so many great songs that there was some forced vote-splitting, but if you had asked me prior to the results "Will 'It Aint Hard To Tell' make the top 100 rap tracks of the gods results?" I would have responded "Without question."

billstevejim, Sunday, 12 June 2011 16:52 (twelve years ago) link
