I actually think the Diwali-Dreamweaver-? is one of the more interesting precipices in music right now. Maybe I'm just an ignoramus but I can't think of much that actually sounds like these grooves and I can't wait to see where Lenky or some other enterprising producer might take it next. That's why Dreamweaver is still so compelling (and likewise for Diwali such a long time down the track) - it feels like sonic frontier music.

so are the first batch of this years riddims hitting the shops now (or at least getting their proper releases)? the names dont fill me with too much anticipation - blackout, chrome, chronic, crystal clear, danger zone [though if this samples kenny loggins all bets are off], grindin [surely this can't be 2004?], perilous, qv, project x, celebration, red alert, ying.

i'd reply to tim's post but continuum talk is really fucking hard for me! somehow my sympathies right now definitely lie more with the qv tho, maybe a regress into more er natural sounds but retaining the kinesis and notional mash? less tech... but then something hot will always come along to disprove me

those riddims are struggling to reach 7s just recently, i guess february would always be a fallow time but there's a bit of tetchy stagnance about. not sure what strongo means by 'proper releases' but don't hold your breath for riddim lps, besides chrome

grindin's just a name sadly, i got all excited too! it's a bit art of noise that one with sort of robotic swoony voices, like... like downcast yul brynner android cowboys gunfighting at the ok chorale!

omg, vybz's "picture me and you" is u&k!!

riddim okay, but the chorus!:

"picture me and you/you and me/k-i-s-s-i-n-g/picture me and you/under the tree/f-u-c-k-i-n-g"

he then goes on to mimic chingy and reference nesquik chocolate milk.

i weep bitter tears over "grindin" (though it sounds pretty good by yr description.)

Bonnie Prince Billy's versioning over the Kris Kristofferson Riddim is u & k OMG!!!!!

My favourite 2004 riddims are both Soca - the Cello (massive low cello moans, Soca goes Goth, mmmmm) and Trample (EXACTLY WHAT IT SAYS). Dancehall-wise it's all about Blackout this 5 minutes - pitter-pattering pink elephants.

Best Trample tune is Faye Ann Lyons - "Lose Your Way" I think.

My favourite Blackout one is Sean Paul having a go at it - "Bounce It Right There" I think it's called, it should be a single, better than that Sasha one anyway.

I'll tell you what I want to hear and that's some really stern conscious stuff, especially since the whole rest of London is at a FAP and I'm not.

tom, for new soca riddims check for the dhol riddim (i've only heard two tracks on it, a straight female soca thing and the mega banton/soca guy one-- it's got plain/real-sounding calypso drumming and thudding electro drums and a flickery little synth line thing.) and the road riddim (fast, standard soca riddim but lots of horns) and the drunk man riddim.

Yeah the Dhol is really good, I think non-Soca people would like it actually as it's quite rawly rhythmic for the genre). I think I've got a couple of the other ones you mentioned, I have a backlog of about 12 tunes I downloaded in a frenzy and haven't had time to sit and listen properly too, how could I resist a Drunk Man Riddim though?

Another good straightforward one is Gone Against, again quite 80s sounding with lots of shimmery little plinks and twangs. "Talkers" is the best tune on that but I forget the vocalist, one of the women who does quite a lot.

drunk man riddim doesn't seem very soca to me. it reminds me of very sweet and fun 80s dancehall and is very easy to move to. the little flexes of ascending violin are what make it.

i'm not sure i've heard anything on gone against.

that vybz cut that jess talks abt is really great: did manage to follow the i-n-gs for a bit but have always been terrible at following the words (all to do with delivery): of the 14 cuts I d/l, sean paul, vybz's and sizzla too were excellent but I didn't think there were any particurlar duds.

gone against is very pleasant. i remember hearing sherline's falking men song on the radio last saturday. she sings very softly and beautifully and everything fits together.

re: the dreamweaver talk upthread, what are everyone's fav cuts? I've not heard that many but I absolutely love Vybz's track 'Visa' (esp. the "Cigarette smoke is just no good/I am just a ganja man...."

Sean Paul's track "Big It Up" on Dinner Fish has been a recent favourite also (old as I'm sure it is; I bought my copy in November then forgot about it. I'm always rather behind the times as far as dancehall is concerned, so it's bound to be quite a bit older!

rocking Vegas' "Hands In the Air", too. Not sure what the riddim's called but it's overtly Bhangra styled, haven't heard anything else on it but I'm keen to discover some more!

also: my fav dancehall tune of the last....ages...has gotta be TOK's "Tell Me If U Can". One of their cheesier tunes, over the top high pitched rnb style vocals, etc. but as always flouting something typically aggresively....male, I suppose (falsetto chorus, "I'm not looking for a girl to be the only one in my world/AllI want to do is have some fun/And then come back to you/TEEEELLLLL MEEEEEEE IT'S OKKAYYYYYYYY...". On the Fresh Ear label, again I'm not sure of the riddim and I haven't heard anything else on it.
