Ha, I too am officially in the jobs market as well (well, will be in a fortnight).

Al, what happened? You've been down this road before, pushed you too hard this time?

ailsa, Friday, 12 October 2007 09:50 (sixteen years ago) link

I haven't handed in my notice yet, but I have told one or two people formally (as of an hour ago) I am in the market and have had three speculative offers on the basis that I may be available already.

Basically, I've had enough. I work fucking miracles (for example, last year I did in 6 months what would normally take 2-3 years, and saved the taxpayer at least £15M in the process) with no money, and for no money (about half of what I'd get paid in industry). We reorganised in April and the upshot of that is likely to be 1 in 3 job cuts. Then last night I got a phone call advising me of a meeting that was happening this morning that I was being painted as the fall guy for. The word 'fraud' was used. I spent an hour gathering enough signed documents to make me bulletproof, then went to the pub. I had an hour this morning handing them over, but the people I'm dropping in it are sufficiently senior to me I can see any evidence being ignored.

Hang on, there goes the phone again...

aldo, Friday, 12 October 2007 09:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Keep at it man. Least you know that you're right and can do a great job. Fuck 'em.

kv_nol, Friday, 12 October 2007 09:57 (sixteen years ago) link

:-(

Still, remember what happened the last time :-)

(also if you can get paid 2x in industry, go there!)

onimo, is your job in danger with these job cuts? Also, Al, can you get a lawyer involved to make sure things aren't ignored?

ailsa, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:02 (sixteen years ago) link

I have a friend going through a similarly crap time with his work (allegations of fraud etc) which has led to him resigning (and missing out on megabucks redundancy deal into the bargain). He has excellent evidence on his side proving he is right. We're all screaming "constructive dismissal" at him, but he won't bite, figuring the hassle isn't worth it. I can't blame him, some people here might remember I had a similar situation about four years ago which had constructive dismissal written all over it, but I couldn't go through with it so I'm not really in a position to encourage others to do otherwise.

ailsa, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:07 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm waiting to see what happens in the meeting that's currently going on before I work out whether I need representation or not. Also, that's what the union is for.

aldo, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Righto, I didn't have the aid of a union in my case, and I don't think my friend does either (but his girlfriend has just qualified as a lawyer, which helps)

ailsa, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:10 (sixteen years ago) link

My job is in danger from these cuts but is in more immediate danger from other things that I can't discuss publicly atm.

onimo, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:25 (sixteen years ago) link

I have an uniong, here is a picture of it

onimo, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:27 (sixteen years ago) link

Fair enough, you can tell me over a pint on Wednesday (or email me). My job is no longer, hurrah, I am a free womang and shall be requiring a new job forthwith.

ailsa, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Can you tell me on work email?

Also, paper tiger hahaha (have to laff else cry)

aldo, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:31 (sixteen years ago) link

aldo. Can you check facebook?

kv_nol, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Not at work, no. Will be able to see when I get home, 4-ish.

aldo, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Hmmmm. If I webmail you on this does it go to you now or still at home?

kv_nol, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:47 (sixteen years ago) link

Aldo I emailed yr work re jobs.

onimo, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, you know that, you've replied :)

(I hate people using forums to tell people they've emailed them tbh, every time I do it I annoy myself)

onimo, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Everything goes home kv, don't sweat it.

aldo, Friday, 12 October 2007 10:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Just don't agree, sign or do anything. Don't even allow a meeting to happen, do not agree to take a phone call. Basically, cut yourself off from the whole thing and work normally. I cannot emphasis inaction enough here!

kv_nol, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:10 (sixteen years ago) link

That was my strategy anyway. ;-)

aldo, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:11 (sixteen years ago) link

Excellent. You'll be fine :)

kv_nol, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:15 (sixteen years ago) link

My boss just came round with "I've got a great idea for how to develop..." and kind of stopped mid-sentence at my "what's my motivation here fucker?" look. That almost cheered me up.

Thing is this would be a great job if it wasn't for all the people that fuck it up.

onimo, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:30 (sixteen years ago) link

jesus ilx got serious while it was down- best of luck to you guys, even if that does sound twee and insincere it really isn't.

darraghmac, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Needless to say I is routing for aldo and onimo - and you know I know what a pile of cnuts you lot work with.

In happier news, I had home made fish pie for lunch (this is not a euphemism). It was NOMier than a NOMmy thing on national NOM day.

And I has bought stupid sweeties to cheer aldo up!

Guilty_Boksen, Friday, 12 October 2007 11:59 (sixteen years ago) link

I will bring sossies to trade for them tomorrow.

I does not need cheering up btw, I am perfectly happy it's come to this because I will actually get off my arse and leave this time.

aldo, Friday, 12 October 2007 12:09 (sixteen years ago) link

Of course you need cheering up - you are stereotypical sullen Scots person (och aye the noo, up yer clunge, etc.)

Seriously, I have no worries on that score. You have been talking about leaving for some time, so this is probably a good thing.

Guilty_Boksen, Friday, 12 October 2007 12:17 (sixteen years ago) link

This CD by the Goslings is very good.

aldo, Friday, 12 October 2007 12:26 (sixteen years ago) link

thanks kv_nol and ailsa - your advice is much appreciated because i know it's given with the best of intentions. i will keep you all posted as to what happens.

Is it anything like the description you sent? And what is a "black sugar avalanche"?

Guilty_Boksen, Friday, 12 October 2007 12:32 (sixteen years ago) link

http://www.someecards.com/?ep=12

this site is hilarious - great for cheering people up!

Rubyredd, Friday, 12 October 2007 12:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Blocked by nanny software. I am now depressed at not being cheered up ;_;

Guilty_Boksen, Friday, 12 October 2007 12:42 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost

It's quite like the description, yes, but more on the stoner/doom axis than you might have though. Avalanche is definitely the wrong word, the pace is glacial. Bits of it remind me of Lustmord.

But let's not turn this thread into the Watercooler.

Rubyredd, I know not what thread this problem is on, but the advice here (particularly from kv) is sound. But, you know, if we never did anything because we were too sensible we would probably all live with our parents. You know what the right thing to do is, so do it.

onimo, Friday, 12 October 2007 12:48 (sixteen years ago) link

You're doing this to annoy me, aren't you onimo?

I can't see the jpgs either. Even more depressed ;_;

Guilty_Boksen, Friday, 12 October 2007 12:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Me neither. He must be doing it from his standalone.

aldo, Friday, 12 October 2007 12:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Me, the last few weeks:

http://www.someecards.com/filestorage/wp_118.jpg

ailsa, Friday, 12 October 2007 13:00 (sixteen years ago) link

I am full on sandwiches. I haven't had a sandwich in two months! Not because of any choice to give them up or anything, I just got bored of them... and now I feel quite unpleasantly full! And I have a headache! PRET WHY DO YOU HATE ME.

I am using a new conditioner, it is that Austrlian stuff. And so far it's really good! But that could just be the fact that it's a DIFFERENT one. I am also using a new shampoo, (shampoo for my real friends, real poo for my sham friends, the JOKE KEEPS ON GIVING)! Pantene Brunette Expressions.

What are you all up to tonight? I will not be going swimming as I forgot my costume. And towel. And am stupid. So instead I will fill and ice cakes (they are a bit too floury and dry, I suspected that might be the case but took the risk - will fill them up and hope that helps a bit).

Sarah, Friday, 12 October 2007 13:02 (sixteen years ago) link

I shall be scoffing food and watching the telly. We recorded several things last night (Californication, 30 Rock, Billie Piper is a boring old whore) so night in catching up. Unless I get any better offers, which is unlikely.

ailsa, Friday, 12 October 2007 13:04 (sixteen years ago) link

nanny software? they aren't even nasty.

I'm truly sorry for all your job issues. Those are a huge suck. Everyone in my family is currently looking for work but me. Meanwhile I have enough for two people.

Feeling a bit crap today and am not wanting it. Nor all the self-analyzation that goes along with feeling crap. fuck it.

I am getting a haircut when I get home, then I may decamp to the pub for a bit. And maybe a bit more.

aldo, Friday, 12 October 2007 13:09 (sixteen years ago) link

Jesus, employment fun for everyone. I hope you all end up in jobs that have the workload of mine combined with the perks of Mister M's. It is what people deserve.

Tonight I will be finishing the work I didn't do this week, and also watching Californication and 30Rock. I also intend to finish reading HMS Surprise for the second time. I think it is my favourite of the Aubrey Maturin books.

Ms. M, did you go to work today? I thought you were going to stay home. Bless, poor sickness.

accentmonkey, Friday, 12 October 2007 13:15 (sixteen years ago) link

i have to ring a number of people with bad news about their housing situations before five, then I'm going to go home and try not to be an official nasty person for the weekend. this will involve two-person bathing and lie-ins with books on both days, all going well.

darraghmac, Friday, 12 October 2007 13:16 (sixteen years ago) link

But let's not turn this thread into the Watercooler.

Let's not...

I am going to see Ratatouille, take SO out to dinner and have a quiet night. Work = hell at the moment so just want to spend weekend forgetting it really.

kv_nol, Friday, 12 October 2007 13:18 (sixteen years ago) link

Watercooler appears to be dead now anyway, what a shame...

ailsa, Friday, 12 October 2007 13:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Let's not...

Hey! We can do whatever we like!

Also I am going to the theatre twice on Sunday. With my MA! So there.
