Another Girl is totally totally ace. Will rep for Jacques Greene forever, though, as he spins with a bunch of my friends in MTL. His sets are basically ILM catnip. Nights Slugs type shit with chopped and screwed mixes of Ciara, Yamaha + assorted Terius, 'Motivation', Cassie's Skydiver, etc. etc. etc.

His remixes of Cassie's 'Must Be Love' and Katy B's 'Broken Record' are also keepers.

Alex in Montreal, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 03:14 (3 years ago) Permalink

Egyptrixx's singles are pretty ace and his live show back in February or whatever was killer, but the full length album didn't blow me away.

Alex in Montreal, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 03:17 (3 years ago) Permalink

I'm liking the Egyptrixx album so far, but I'm kind of taking it track by track.

Jacques Greene is the best producer associated with Night Slugs at the moment I reckon (assuming Nzungunzu don't count, and Girl Unit is hit-and-miss). Seems to understand the importance of colour and having bass that does something other than throb and glower. A lot of other Night Slugs stuff talks a good game with its technicolour sci-fi landscape synths and the music seems drab in comparison.

Really didn't like the Egyptrixx album at all, have yet to hear any Jam City that's done much for me.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 10:46 (3 years ago) Permalink

Actually I really like Velour as well.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 10:47 (3 years ago) Permalink

you know velour = hyetal + julio bashmore, right? i hadn't particularly loved them pre-velour but separately they're kind of blowing my mind this year - hyetal's album is amazing, bashmore's "battle for middle you" was already one of my favourite tracks of the year and then he followed it up with the fantastic batty knee dance ep...

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 10:50 (3 years ago) Permalink

Yeah, Bashmore rules. I think Mosca is great too but he needs to release more stuff.

Number None, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 10:52 (3 years ago) Permalink

Julio Bashmore is really good as well.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 10:58 (3 years ago) Permalink

(Never actually heard of Hyetal, will check that one out).

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 10:59 (3 years ago) Permalink

Velour's really good, yeah. Bumsex references aside ;-) Was reading about Hyetal yesterday, hadn't heard of him before.

Evil Eau (dog latin), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 11:00 (3 years ago) Permalink

also on the batty knee dance ep

my fav trax on the hyetal album (which is a bit of a curveball from his prior productions)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 11:03 (3 years ago) Permalink

Really didn't like the Egyptrixx album at all

not even Rooks Theme? shish

Let me help you with your URL problems (blueski), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 11:03 (3 years ago) Permalink

(yes, hyetal pushes the same buttons in me that witch house does, so i'll just pre-empt that zing there)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 11:04 (3 years ago) Permalink

"Ribble to Amazon" is my favourite Bashmore production, real nice summery vibe. Couldn't get on with the Egyptrixx album at all.

Number None, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 11:05 (3 years ago) Permalink

i'm pretty much in like-not-love territory with egyptrixx's productions myself, though the ikonika remix of "the only way up" was awesome

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 11:06 (3 years ago) Permalink

There was one good track on the Egyptrixx album but I can't remember what, the rest sounded so... uninspired.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 11:07 (3 years ago) Permalink

Thes might be my fave Bashmore and Hytetal bits...

Dispite being really into both of them I wasn't feeling those Velour tracks, wouldn't mind hearing them do more though.Hyetal's collabs with Peverelist and Shortstuff are amazing though.

jimitheexploder, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 11:39 (3 years ago) Permalink

the importance of colour and having bass that does something other than throb and glower.

Most of the producers mentioned here seem to be working on a deliberately icy, inhuman sound..... it's hard for me to love a lot of it. Which is funny, because I used to get off - and still do - on extremely jacking techno. I dunno. There's an incredible fussiness to a lot of it.

Or maybe younger listeners aren't burdened with unpleasant memories of the jazzier side of jungle so it doesn't bother them as much..

yes. these days they do the night tracking house night type thing at Blizzarts on Thursdays for their Baller's Social Club Night, and open for whoever they bring into town. they have piknic electronique the weekend of OSHEAGA and have booked Girl Unit and DâM-FunK, which should be properly epic.

Alex in Montreal, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:07 (3 years ago) Permalink

I really dug the Velour ep, actually. Probably my favourite Night Slugs release outside of Girl Unit. (And, surely, shouldn't we get a mod to change the title of the thread to some sort of all-purpose night slugs one for ease of discovery?)

Alex in Montreal, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:10 (3 years ago) Permalink

cooooooooooool i will go as often as possible this summer

flopson, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:13 (3 years ago) Permalink

I always forget who is from Montreal on ILM. Heh. I'm sure we will bump into one another without knowing it!

Alex in Montreal, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:16 (3 years ago) Permalink

i had no idea flopson was canadian let alone from MTL

lex pretend, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 16:20 (3 years ago) Permalink

People did not know Jacques Greene was from MTL.
People did not know flopson was from MTL.
There is only one realistic conclusion to draw here.

optimum - not sure if there are any relevant opinions to be had about this track

also i've been following this thread with a bit of interest and my only question is why don't these guys get more love on ILM?

for my money much more exciting than night slugs

what sort of things were you thinking of? xp

there's bits of bleep all over this comp

i've had 'arpjam' running thru my mind all day

the optimum release that's really whoa was his debut on planet mu - max power/crash riddim/lily - all so confident and effective. his new track in that ikonika mix i posted this morning is really awesome too.
