opening of the 12th round was a moment of real beauty, too - the fighters touched gloves but then really spontaneously just looked at each other & embraced in the middle of the ring - beautiful, beautiful fight

epic by all accounts, can't wait to see it

ruingin (rip van wanko), Sunday, 8 May 2011 03:43 (twelve years ago) link

fuckin Christ the amount of in-the-ring stuff before the fight is ridiculous. I'm not going to cover the fight on thread, I'm just gonna watch the fight, but...both "Star-Spangled Banner" and "America the Beautiful" (the latter sung, beautifully I should say, by Jaime Foxx)? C'mon. One anthem per side please.

holy fuck tho LL is doing "Mama Said Knock You Out" for Shane's ring walk and it is fucking electrifying. Hope somebody uploads it somewhere because he's killing it

The problem with following fights online

(12:15pm) Round 3 - Pacquiao's speed forces Mosley to back-pedal. Pacquiao decks Mosley with a left straight to the face. A lopsided round for Manny. Pacquiao 10-8

------------------------------------------------------

Round 3. They trade straight power shots to the midsection in the first minute. Pacquiao gets in two lefts that back Mosley up. Pacquiao drops Mosley with a right hook with a minute to go. Mosley gets up at "six." Pacquiao measures Mosley for his straight left, but the 39-year-old vet holds on to clear his head and run out the clock. (Pacquiao's round, 10-8)

ruingin (rip van wanko), Sunday, 8 May 2011 04:19 (twelve years ago) link

Weird fight. Neither guy real aggrerssive. Vasquez-arce fight was fantastic, too bad the guys father threw the towel in.

I disagree with the posts above-ll cool j and the plastic surgery disaster in pacs corner singing the guys into the ring was supremely cheesy.

jesus louise finally some energy in the 10th

how many punches has mosley even landed? like, two?

del griffith, Sunday, 8 May 2011 04:43 (twelve years ago) link

Wondering if pac is dogging it to bait mayweather into taking his skirt off. Just got knocked down

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Sunday, 8 May 2011 04:44 (twelve years ago) link

Mosely has done nothing. A lame performance.

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Sunday, 8 May 2011 04:50 (twelve years ago) link

Too bad we are not seeing a repeat of what pacqiao did to that fraud hatton. Moseley deserves that treatment.

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Sunday, 8 May 2011 04:54 (twelve years ago) link

Mosely showed grace & class in the Jim Grey interview in the ring

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 8 May 2011 04:59 (twelve years ago) link

but yeah Vasquez Jr v Arce was the best fight on the card. Pacquiao as people keep pointing out wasn't as busy as he normally is, didn't seem to have the desire to close the deal.

If you like rap and you didn't feel LL's flow on "Mama Said" then you are high or something, not in the good sense of "high"

crap fight

no xmas for jonchaies (nakhchivan), Sunday, 8 May 2011 05:01 (twelve years ago) link

thought pacquiao would finish it w/in a couple of rounds after that third

v strange lassitude overwhelming him after that...

no xmas for jonchaies (nakhchivan), Sunday, 8 May 2011 05:02 (twelve years ago) link

He's a good guy (meaning moseley). I've always liked him a lot. I think its over, though

Xxpost. Not a big rap fan. Not high either, unfortunately. Thought the ll cool j- frank stallone wannabe combo was embarrassing. Quite frankly, it sucked so bad it was funny

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Sunday, 8 May 2011 05:05 (twelve years ago) link

he was in a fender-bender earlier today I guess? I couldn't believe a fighter'd even be able to put in any performance at all after getting nerves rattled like that. This was the worst Manny fight I've seen by some distance - the Margarito fight was fire, this only had flashes of what makes Pacquiao great. Still that "if you hit me, it inspires me" thing, he turned it on a few times and it's always like WHOA HERE WE GO.

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 8 May 2011 05:10 (twelve years ago) link

by frank stallone wannabe do you mean jimi jamison, the lead singer of survivor?

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 8 May 2011 05:10 (twelve years ago) link

such a waste of gus johnson

all the intro stuff was p terrible

just a payday for sugar shane, he never had a chance

johnny crunch, Sunday, 8 May 2011 05:14 (twelve years ago) link

if the shane who fought floyd had showed up he might have! weirdly uninspired from both fighters - living up to hype is hard but Pacquiao usually rises to the occasion. But it helps to have a villain. Margarito was perfect - 70s style club fighter gone widescreen, refuse-to-fall punishment-absorbing built-for-storyline. What's Shane's story? That Floyd put him off until he was overripe. It made for a compelling fight against Floyd, but with Pacquiao, the presumption that Pac was going to knock him out and Shane being too classy to get pissed about it meant there just wasn't a whole lot of tension.

Still, when Pac unleashes those rapidfire combos, I get a huge fanboy rush. Always beautiful to see.

(xp) gus is good when working boxing? he is so terrible with mma

jeff, Sunday, 8 May 2011 05:21 (twelve years ago) link

Yes I mean that jamison guy. Didn't know mosely was in an accident. To be honest, I respect both fighters. I think pacquiao is one of those game changing guys you get once in a generation, like the guy who died today, seve ballesteros. They have that "it" factor.

The Margarito fight was SO fun.

reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Sunday, 8 May 2011 05:29 (twelve years ago) link

btw Pacquiao haters within seconds of the fight are posting this nonsense about him being juiced on EPO & that's the only way he wins fights. If you're not familiar with Pacquiao haters, they are some of the most unhinged nutballs on the web. Right after every fuckin' body else of course.

five gone cats from Boston (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 8 May 2011 05:30 (twelve years ago) link

Gus rules at baksketball and football.

Who could hate pacqiaou? He's one of my favorite athletes ever. A class dude in every way.

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Sunday, 8 May 2011 05:33 (twelve years ago) link

Man a lot of people hate Pacquiao. Especially people who're susceptible to conspiracy theory - Floyd's headgame "blood test 30 days before the fight! no two weeks! no 72 hours!" bit really got into people's heads - they claim Manny's juicing (w/EPO, very hard to test for), that he makes people age out of their prime before he gives 'em a shot, etc. but honestly a lot of it's just straight-out hateration - Manny could jump through all their hoops & they'd still say HE'S JUICING! etc

Didn't Riddick Bowe throw his WBC belt in the bin rather than fight Lennox Lewis? I vaguely remember Lewis taking duck money to let Tyson fight someone else - eventually fighting him years later when he was done.

Hatton wasn't a fraud - just a good fighter who was found wanting at the very top level. Looked amazing on the way up - walking forward with lots of combos and body shots - but never looked after himself properly - bloating up 50 lbs between fights.

tbf if your name was Hitman you'd think you had a 50% chance against someone called Pacman

this is otm - he just didn't have the discipline or will to keep training after he beat kosta tzsyu

Guys-i was shitfaced last night. I liked hatton. But he was clearly out of his element in that fight.

Thraft of Cleveland (Bill Magill), Sunday, 8 May 2011 19:58 (twelve years ago) link

Watched this fight tonight - absolute shocker from the ref. Anyone would think he'd been told the 9-0-0 guy couldn't possibly be beaten by the 14-10-3 journeyman. Doran had already been down before being hurt another twice in the first round then the ref stops it as soon as Maxwell (that's MAX MAXWELL!) has taken two shots.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwZXzuW6CcE

100% record forever tainted imo

the goon is in the gutter (onimo), Friday, 20 May 2011 23:58 (twelve years ago) link

He was clearly staggered and before the ref stepped in, he was basically defenseless and ripe for a real pummeling. But the ref should have given him a standing eight count first. If he still seemed glazed over, THEN consider stopping it.

Aimless, Saturday, 21 May 2011 01:04 (twelve years ago) link

in almost all professional fights, there is no standing eight count.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 21 May 2011 01:07 (twelve years ago) link

it's an ok stoppage.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 21 May 2011 01:08 (twelve years ago) link

OK. Then the ref did a decent thing there. He was gonna get creamed in about two more seconds. Getting smashed around when your defensive reflexes are gone can leave permanent brain damage.

Aimless, Saturday, 21 May 2011 01:10 (twelve years ago) link

The referee gave his opponent a standing eight count about 20 seconds earlier. Maxwell was hurt but he wasn't even given a chance. Honestly watching the way it all went down it was like someone panicked at their future title contender suddenly turning chinny and vulnerable to being stopped by a very limited boxer. Doran was hurt several times but allowed to recover and continue.
