al ship's top 50 pop singles of the 00s -- which is your favorite? (other than SUBG)

"Glamorous" is great too, kind of lost a coinflip in the 'ok i'm gonna just have three Fergie singles instead of four'

i like to hear what omissions people prefer, name names!

i think - moreso than with your rap or r&b lists - the fact that you actually engage fully with this kind of music and have your own unique taste and approach to it means your list is going to be personal and throw off others who would just prefer the canon. you got similar reactions to your rock list iirc

not to be defensive, but i am curious what exactly this means -- in comparison to the other lists i've done for other genres, in comparison to what your personal top 50 would be, etc.?

most of yr other top 50 lists felt like a better overview of the genres they were covering even granting the fact that theyre expressions of personal taste this one is too scattershot & its interpretation of 'pop' is probably too narrow

also most of the songs are just really terrible so

what would be a broader interpretation of 'pop' though? what artists did i give the shaft?

actually, and i'm not going to go to your other lists to back this up but, i'd bet you have more repeat artists on this list than any other one? seems kind of light on novelty hits too, which is probably what most people expect when they're about to read a pop list

yeah there's definitely a lot of repeat artists here and it's very much a product of my favorites and biases, i will cop to that. i'm just curious what definition of contemporary pop (not counting stuff on the other lists) could make this list seem 'narrow,' just because for me Norah Jones and All-American Rejects and the Shakira and Feist and Fergie and Dido span a pretty wide spectrum.

well you couldve included more old ppl/lol yuppie pop - 'leave your boyfriends behind' charted didnt it? or that irish piano ballad - but its also weird that stuff like 'gold digger' or 'crazy' doesnt 'count'. theres also all the pop country trax that were giant hits idk looking at the billboard top 100 for the last decade so many of the songs were covered in yr rap & rnb lists so, sure, youre drawing from a narrower pool.

really the biggest exclusion were sorta-indie trax that seemed to 'cross over' imo

well taylor swift & coldplay were kinda the biggest exclusions (other than kanye) in my mind but this is not really ~important~ to me or anything. the list is both more jarring & less comprehensive imo but i get that there are self-imposed constraints acting to potentially cause that, & that its also inherent in trying to outline a more amorphous 'genre' like pop

mostly i just think a lot of these songs suck, so yeah

kanye & coldplay are essentially pop acts imo but thats an ilm tediousfest id prefer to skip out on so

id put the cover of 'its my life' over 'hella good' or any gwen solo singles

having no overlap in lists was more about being able to max out how many songs i could cover than anything else fwiw -- obviously there are gray areas but i just figured out the best single place to put a song and stuck with it

"the remedy" was one of those songs in high school where i consciously made the decision to rep for the song from the jump, zings be damned

i'm down w/ "the remedy" (see Jason Mraz - C/D?)

i like it well enough in a 2nd-tier-Matrix-productions way -- it's kind of hilarious how obvious it is where his shitty funk rock song ends and where their big pop chorus begins. preferred the follow-up "You And I Both".

Both great, but no.

I think there is a certain air of absolute joyful plenitude and completeness and can-this-be-happening ecstaticness that a lot of disco-pop/house-pop anthems aspire to and that "Love At First Sight" actually nails.

Something like "Come Into My World" is going for a different vibe of escapist dreaminess (closer to "Can't Get You Out Of My Head", though that's slightly different again).
