I wasn't counting it.

New one sounds predictable

curmudgeon, Monday, 2 May 2011 14:43 (twelve years ago) link

"nonstop disco paperwork" is a better, a more beasties title than the real one: "nonstop disco powerpack"

I'm probably crazy but somewhere around "Funky Donkey" and for the next few tracks this thing seems to me to be channeling Cabaret Voltaire (something from the early part of the mid period).

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 5 May 2011 18:22 (twelve years ago) link

It's weird, it's casual, it's short, it's fun. I dig it, and I don't have to think too much about it and, you know, that's okay.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Thursday, 5 May 2011 18:24 (twelve years ago) link

The "Lee Majors" joint is p killer imo

VegemiteGrrl, Thursday, 5 May 2011 20:16 (twelve years ago) link

Probably not giving this enough love because I copped DJ Quik and Battles at the same time and have enjoyed them more. That said, 'Make Some Noise' 'Don't Play No Game..''Here's A Little Something' 'OK' and 'Lee Majors' are all pretty great imo.

The only one I dont like is "Tadlock's Glasses"...the effects on it make me queasy? But everything else is good to fantastic so far. Wonder how well MCA is, if there will be much touring

VegemiteGrrl, Thursday, 5 May 2011 22:20 (twelve years ago) link

there won't be any touring IIRC

the album version of Lee Majors is exactly the same as the single, isn't it? I've only heard the MSG stream

goddamn on first listen I love this more than any post Ill Communication release. so much fun.

mca is still undergoing treatment but "doing well". so fuck knows. hope he pulls through. coming up to two years from the diagnosis (?)

tending tropics (jim in glasgow), Friday, 6 May 2011 20:56 (twelve years ago) link

Kind of impressed that he could lay down vocals even. Do we know how much stuff he added to Pt2 vs what was already on Pt1?

VegemiteGrrl, Saturday, 7 May 2011 00:00 (twelve years ago) link

Changed a line about death in Too Many Rappers, I think that's all

It's fucking awful. the beats are rude electronic samples with no depth. squiggly electro that only exists for this kind of project. it should embarrass us all. what corny version of "old school" (how do you even type that?) "hip hop" is this? late 90s frat music can fuck off.

paulhw, Saturday, 7 May 2011 04:04 (twelve years ago) link

ok, finished?

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 7 May 2011 04:22 (twelve years ago) link

shouldn't there be something about wheelchairs and irrelevancy...feel like we're missing some key bullet points

VegemiteGrrl, Saturday, 7 May 2011 04:24 (twelve years ago) link

paulhw, eat a bag of dicks dipped in cocoa butter...k thx

BIG YNGWIE aka the malmsteendriver (Neanderthal), Saturday, 7 May 2011 04:41 (twelve years ago) link

paulhw way off the money, this is surprisingly good and I'm finding I like it a little more with each listen. I mean, yeah, we can talk a little bit about the lyrics being corny and lots OF shouting EVERY other WORD but, c'mon, thats been the case for a long time now.

yea that's kinda like criticizing Prince for squealing, I mean, it's been the Beasties' MO since they went from hardcore to hip hop.

BIG YNGWIE aka the malmsteendriver (Neanderthal), Saturday, 7 May 2011 04:45 (twelve years ago) link

and personally I adore the Beasties goofiness

BIG YNGWIE aka the malmsteendriver (Neanderthal), Saturday, 7 May 2011 04:45 (twelve years ago) link

i was one of the few who liked To the Five Boroughs, but it was clearly still a low point in their catalog. this is soooooo refreshing.

BIG YNGWIE aka the malmsteendriver (Neanderthal), Saturday, 7 May 2011 15:39 (twelve years ago) link

Listening to the full album and my enjoyment is kinda dependent on how long I can go without focusing on the lyrics (did you know these guys are crushing the competition?). Music's fun when it doesn't get too trudgy - def feels like a step up from 5 Boroughs.

da croupier, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 17:16 (twelve years ago) link

eleven months pass...

This is a pretty good record, you know?

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 7 May 2012 08:46 (eleven years ago) link

Way more interesting musically and with much better tunes than 5 Burroughs.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 7 May 2012 08:46 (eleven years ago) link

Totally in agreement. I ended up listening to it a lot over the course of 2011, and again over the last few days.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 7 May 2012 09:19 (eleven years ago) link

same here. The highlight is the 1:56 "Funky Donkey."

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 7 May 2012 12:25 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, it's not amazing but it's a solid album. glad that to the 5 boroughs was not their swansong.

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Monday, 7 May 2012 14:19 (eleven years ago) link

exactly, but outside of a few tracks not much I'd want to hear again

guess it's Honker Burger tonight...#fml (frogbs), Monday, 7 May 2012 14:26 (eleven years ago) link

Lee Majors Come Again is killer

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 7 May 2012 14:51 (eleven years ago) link

yeah - that + "Too Many Rappers" were my favorites

guess it's Honker Burger tonight...#fml (frogbs), Monday, 7 May 2012 14:53 (eleven years ago) link

it disappointed me b/c I heard the awesome record store day single with those DJ Hero mixes with DJ Shadow and the Daft Punk samples and it briefly made me wonder if the new album was going to be a cut-n-scratch DJ thing, like a new Paul's Boutique

guess it's Honker Burger tonight...#fml (frogbs), Monday, 7 May 2012 14:54 (eleven years ago) link
