beaver trilogy is AMAZING.
i dunno if i can blow any cash at the fair this year. might go for an hour or two to scope things out, but will have to impose serious spending limits.. like... $30.

ian, Monday, 20 October 2008 15:36 (fifteen years ago) link

I'll be working Sun aft'noon ... but I'll have to miss the wedding on Saturday.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 20 October 2008 15:39 (fifteen years ago) link

bump for tonight

Dr Morbius, Friday, 24 October 2008 14:20 (fifteen years ago) link

So, if anyone is there and sees a copy of Harvester's "Hemat" for under $75, think of your old friend Ian, will ya? I doubt I'll make it this weekend, maybe Sunday, but it's looking less likely by the hour.

ian, Friday, 24 October 2008 14:29 (fifteen years ago) link

On a similar note, if anyone sees a copy of the Dead C's "Clyma Est Mort" for under $25, that would be nice too ;)

ian, Friday, 24 October 2008 14:30 (fifteen years ago) link

aw, I think I sold that a few years ago, otherwise I'd give it to you. I think there were two pressings though, right?

dan selzer, Friday, 24 October 2008 14:54 (fifteen years ago) link

i'll be there. mett ur ole blal ne

burt_stanton, Friday, 24 October 2008 14:59 (fifteen years ago) link

xp to dan:
yeah, which is why it should be cheaper than the $30-40 it routinely goes for on ebay. fuck THAT.

ian, Friday, 24 October 2008 15:56 (fifteen years ago) link

I see I'm on the same volunteer shift w/ other ILX celebs

Sasha Frere-Jones selling his records:

Today and today only, Dr. Delay and I will be selling the heart of my record collection at the WFMU Record Fair. If you are a fan of anything that happens here, please come down, if only to say hi. I am selling the records I care most about, the ones I have held on to for the longest time. I am genuinely ready to let these records go (more on that later) but I would ideally like to see this music end up with people who will love it and share it. There may be some liveblogging about this or on the New Yorker blog. We'll see. I've never done this before.

curmudgeon, Friday, 24 October 2008 16:19 (fifteen years ago) link

I wonder how many versions of the Song of the South sndtrk he'll be unloading...

Dr Morbius, Friday, 24 October 2008 16:27 (fifteen years ago) link

lol, SFJ was initially selling from the parking lot until somebody tapped him on the shoulder to tell him that wasn't so cool and he should really get a table.

forksclovetofu, Friday, 24 October 2008 16:50 (fifteen years ago) link

or head for that flea market on 6th Ave (RIP?)

Dr Morbius, Friday, 24 October 2008 16:51 (fifteen years ago) link

lol @ sfj.
we bought a large chunk of his lesser stuff a few months back.

ian, Friday, 24 October 2008 17:36 (fifteen years ago) link

think i'm going on sunday, seeing as i missed last year's...

donna rouge, Friday, 24 October 2008 18:50 (fifteen years ago) link

Dr Morbius, where are you working Sunday afternoon? I will be at the swag table.

tokyo rosemary, Friday, 24 October 2008 20:51 (fifteen years ago) link

my usual spot, the LP table.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 24 October 2008 21:18 (fifteen years ago) link

so wish i could make it this year, but im planning to spend a bunch of money buying my boss's record collection in a few weeks (supposedly lots of 80s SST and old indie), so it's just not in the cards. keep it warm for me, dudes!

69, Friday, 24 October 2008 21:22 (fifteen years ago) link

i didnt have a dealer pass so didnt get to see the madness
but SFJ told me his indie stuff was priced to move
enough that no real fights broke out but there were some altercations at 2pm between dealers. and he did $1K in 20 minutes. his boxes were half wiped out at 4pm.

sanskrit, Saturday, 25 October 2008 03:26 (fifteen years ago) link

SFJ blog lol

2:43 PM: Slight dealer frenzy. Hard to let go of DNA EP. Thurston stopped by, didn't buy. Talked briefly about "Walls Have Ears."

7:08: I forgot how hard retail is. (Even my fake-ass retail.) Standing around all day? How could cashiers even be denied a chair? UNRIGHT.

earlier post--Whatever does not sell on Friday will go later in the weekend at an undisclosed location. That will be that. I have no need of a turntable now, Rega or otherwise. Sometimes, the time wins.

curmudgeon, Saturday, 25 October 2008 13:58 (fifteen years ago) link

wait, I thought early admiss wasn't til 4 on Friday.

I shd stop in around 4 or 5 today.

i found the "girl on me" 12" for $20! (usually fetches around $100 on discogs/ebay)

i was at one booth where this guy kept SMELLING the records. not just a quick sniff, but really deeply inhaling musty copies of beastie boys and sly and the family stone records. over every inch of the record cover. it was unnerving

donna rouge, Monday, 27 October 2008 14:20 (fifteen years ago) link

oh, the psychic damage.

I only saw a little bit of DMBQ, but the drummer and his entire kit being hoisted over ppl's heads was a laugh.

Excerpt from e-mail press release I received. Those major labels are so hip:

Burbank, CA – Warner Bros. Records — the No. 1 vinyl label in the country — will bring vinyl directly to the people this weekend by hosting a booth at the annual WFMU Record Fair in New York City. The event, known as a worldwide Mecca for music enthusiasts and vinyl fans, will be held October 23rd through the 25th at the Metropolitan Pavilion, 125 W. 18th Street in Manhattan.

"There is no better place to sell music directly to fans than at the annual WMFU show," says Warner Bros. Records General Manager Tom Biery, who oversees all of the company’s vinyl releases. "As a vinyl freak, I have been going to the show for years and have always thought that having a WBR/Reprise booth to sell our records would be a ton of fun as well as a great learning experience.”

This weekend also kicks off Warner Bros. Records’ relationship with vinyl-only indie label, Original Recording Group (ORG), which will be manning the WBR booth.

At the show, Reprise Records will unveil, for the first time, legendary singer-songwriter Neil Young's first four catalog reissues, including the direct-to-fan 180-gram Limited Edition box set. Those titles, Neil Young, Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, After The Gold Rush, and Harvest, have been meticulously cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering from the original master tapes (under the direct supervision of Neil Young's team) and manufactured at the world’s premiere record-pressing plant, Pallas MFG/Germany. This is the first-ever upgrade to these essential recordings on vinyl and is sure to delight both fans and audiophiles alike.

wonder how much they'll be charging for the neil box--if it's affordable (lol) i might have to go for it tbh.

ian, Friday, 23 October 2009 20:02 (fourteen years ago) link

four neil young albums? hmm, that should only run you about 40 bucks or so. hahahahahahahaha! wait, i was thinking about a world where prices for things make sense. so, should be about 400 bucks.

scott seward, Friday, 23 October 2009 20:15 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm guessing $125.

ian, Friday, 23 October 2009 20:58 (fourteen years ago) link

which is obviously way too much.

ian, Friday, 23 October 2009 20:59 (fourteen years ago) link

robin and i are selling a ton of stuff today, which is why i am awake.
Clothes! Rekkids! CDs! Books! An accordion! A plush Stimpy doll! Boots! The first 'Diana Ross presents The Jackson 5' LP on vinyl, which I suggested we price at a gazillion dollars, but I think we settled on 7.
All moneys raised to go into the "dog account", our joint checking for all things pit bull related so you're helping a good cause!
Come find us won't you? I want to tell you about my day on sesame street.

I AM NOT ONE TO PURSUE GAME, MY FRIEND - NO, INDEED. (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 24 October 2009 11:28 (fourteen years ago) link

woulda gone but didn't want to be tempted to spend twice in one weekend...

Hope the trip back wasn't too wet.

Any big markups on Soupy Sales LPs?

Your Favorite Saturday Night Thing (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 25 October 2009 01:27 (fourteen years ago) link

I went today, got a Roy Harper LP and a weird Japanese Stranglers EP. Crazy fun but, by the early afternoon it had turned into an insane clusterfuck.

Great crowd; many people with personal turntables for vinyl checking, japanese guys toting those suitcases on wheels, filled with records and a surprising amount of cute girls. I thought vinyl hunting was a dorky guy thing only.

kwhitehead, Sunday, 25 October 2009 02:19 (fourteen years ago) link

girls who dress up for the wfmu record fair: classic or dud! leaning towards dud tbh, no offense to the vinyl nerd ladies out there. i think any 'girls who dress up' are kinda dud to me.

pondering going tomorrow afternoon--did anyone actually check out the Reprise booth and/or notice the neil young box price?
