Funky is just kinda frustrighting to me at the moment on one hand we’ve got pure soulful deep big room house, which is alright but I’m use to it since its been all over the shop unless you’re a pirate in London it seems. I mean you’d hear it in day time TV adds here about a decade ago and the rules haven’t changed that mujch to make it sound fresh again to my ears at least. Then you have the Dutch thing going on, its got some cool ideas but it isn’t a million miles away from Zomby Nation or Erol Alkan its pretty much thier tricks condenced. I keep hearing all this in funky radio recently. I’m not making a sweeping statment mind, I get diffrent vibes from diffrent DJs and producers but this is one vibe thats bugging me and embedding itself at the moment.

cool

always did quite like rapid's (iirc maligned) funky dabbling early on, interestingly awkward in a way the deliberately awkward critnip stuff wasnt

also i know ghetto looking like chris rock is already a thing but still!!

r|t|c, Tuesday, 26 April 2011 22:17 (thirteen years ago) link

really do think marcus' new direction as it were has hit its stride recently, even if it isnt quite what we all fell in love with

last week's one is probably my fave radio set of the year so far (although i am not as au courant as i have been in the past admittedly)

r|t|c do you mean the 20 April set?

I'm loving this one, the last hour in particular and especially the last half hour.

I'm wondering if it's so much Marcus mastering his "new style" or simply normalising it, after the first half hour or so there seems to be less Sunday Roast-ish material in general, more bangers.

Or to the extent that he is playing that kind of percussive house funky he's ripping through it really quick, in a way that re-integrates it back into a funky mix sensibility (that is to say, more dancehall X grime).

Overall you could say there's more of a percussive bubbly quality - kinda like if Classic Records tunes were made to be MCd over - than Marcus circa 2008, but otherwise it reminds me of his set with Rankin', Shantie and Dream last year.

It also reminds me of Petchy at his best, though I'm not sure how much of that is the music and the mixing and how much of it is down to Rankin' and Shantie being in such fine form, so relentless, so enthusiastic, chiming in on each other's rhymes like The Last Supper like to do so much. Their energy on this really is phenomenal, the last 30 minutes is so intense. Such a good example of why radio sets are so crucial to understanding how funky works, a DJ Reflex or whatever mix, no matter how good, just isn't in the same category.

Can you help me out though: does that Funkystepz tune at about 79 minutes go right through to 81 minutes? Because if so that's insane, what a massive tune. Any bet Hyperdub will try to snatch it and "Warrior" for a double.

Tim F, Thursday, 5 May 2011 22:29 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, it must have been that one - it's got a stonking windrush/crunk vip/warrior section whereupon i distinctly recall thinking now this is more like it

listening to your bit now and funkystepz 'shocker' plays for 30 seconds and then it's naughty raver 'slave of the bass' WHICH YOU WELL KNOW (iirc)

love the big juddering carnival one after that too, been looking for an id

need to listen to this set in full again but fully agree marcus' mixing has been next lev of late

r|t|c, Thursday, 5 May 2011 23:10 (thirteen years ago) link

i am almost ashamed to say it but shantie & rankin are pretty much on a best imaginary friends level for me these days, even when marcus was sounding cack i couldn't not check in with them, see how rankin's foot fetish was coming along etc

r|t|c, Thursday, 5 May 2011 23:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Ah of course! I had forgotten my own ID. I thought i recognised the "Shocker" bit too and that if it had been followed up by something so awesome I surely would have remembered.

"Crunk VIP" awesome also.

Tim F, Thursday, 5 May 2011 23:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Tim, that Scottie B track you posted about a month ago has disappeared. Mind helping me get my hands on it?

haha he doesnt do it in this partic set but rankin seriously deserves a medal for turning the ooh-look-at-me-i'm-sampling-grime "dun know fam" into "jaegerbomb" on that mosca tune

r|t|c, Friday, 6 May 2011 00:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Yes he does! Early on. Totally takes the tune to a new level.

Funkystepz - "Girls Go WIld"

won't hear this mix til monday but my spidey sense is tingling me that this will be some kind of refix of the assassin song

will expect a parade in my honour if so obv

r|t|c, Sunday, 8 May 2011 11:27 (twelve years ago) link

alas i may have spoken too soon re marcus as sets since have decidedly failed to recapture anything like the 20th's magic :/

r|t|c, Sunday, 8 May 2011 11:31 (twelve years ago) link

It's not, but it's pretty awesome.

Perhaps Funkystepz reasoned they couldn't improve the Assassin tune given it sounds like Funkystepz at 33 rpm anyhow.

Tim F, Sunday, 8 May 2011 11:34 (twelve years ago) link

i attribute a lot of that set's success to eastwood's fantastic 'dirty cash' version early on btw, you just can't go off on a noodle after that's set the tone

the wheeling up of the mistakenly played lady chann song in lieu of the jazzy pioneer ft egypt song was a classic marcus blast from the past as well - you or i or any other lesser dj would have gone with the chann but only he would have envisioned a bigger picture smashcut like that - an object lesson in linear vs dialectical funky

lol I was thinking something vaguely along these lines today.

Hey what's the "deep dubby house" tune Marcus always plays with the accordian spurts, like a spookier version of "Heater"?

am currently catching up and researching a tracklist for the marcus show, dunno that accordion one yet but it's earcatching i agree

(gonna end up being sunday roast, let's face it)

r|t|c, Monday, 9 May 2011 18:46 (twelve years ago) link

Typically you've already got all the ones I had.

Mercurial Myrmidon - Hey Bongo (Deep Mix)

As always this totally goes off.

The Sunday Roast tune before "Crackish" is massive too, at least in this context.

Tim F, Monday, 9 May 2011 18:58 (twelve years ago) link

i knew the vibes was strong when 'crackish' came round, marcus hasnt drawn for that one in an age

also full disclosure: i hadnt reckoned on the awesomeness of 'caution' at all before this set. SO SO GOOD THOUGH

r|t|c, Monday, 9 May 2011 19:04 (twelve years ago) link

that mix of 'hey bongo' and 'zulu' together is totally in my "to steal" folder as well, matchmaking at its finest

Yeah, the very slight pitching up turns it from another Loca Moca roller into more of a "Warrior" style explosive raver.

That whole section is so bubbling.

that mix of 'hey bongo' and 'zulu' together is totally in my "to steal" folder as well, matchmaking at its finest

Yes!

Tim F, Monday, 9 May 2011 19:10 (twelve years ago) link

Also pretty awesome rehabilitation of DJ Tonka's "Freeze" as a funky tune. Sounds fantastic with MCs. Should be more classic house bangers with Brixton Mixes.

Tim F, Monday, 9 May 2011 19:13 (twelve years ago) link

shants and ranks b2b over 'caution' with the "back to the government's plight" vs "at rex in a drop top lex" complementary hype lyrics (how did ranks know the tune would have car horns right after?) is pretty much like a supercomputer calculating the entirety of the quik & kurupt blackout album in nanoseconds

r|t|c, Monday, 9 May 2011 19:17 (twelve years ago) link

That's one of my absolute favourite Ranking chants. Especially "It's all from a text, that she got from her girlfriend (apparently an ex)..."

Tim F, Monday, 9 May 2011 19:22 (twelve years ago) link

"and i'm feeling overwhelmed but slightly elated..."!

r|t|c, Monday, 9 May 2011 19:28 (twelve years ago) link

That Rudimental ft. Shanti - Deep In The Valley reminds me of Buck and Bury in the cadence.

Tim F, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 12:50 (twelve years ago) link

Okay that 20th April mix is off the hook, ropey Tyler remix notwithstanding. Full disclosure - I skipped right to the second hour. As usual its the clattery carnival bangers that really work for me, and there seem to be more of them. The sense of escalating momentum is so enjoyable as whole that I've minimal interest in seeking out individual MP3s of most of this stuff.

Matt DC, Monday, 16 May 2011 18:54 (twelve years ago) link

the second hour of that marcus nasty set is just pure vibes - love the camaraderie - plus shantie on crunk vip is waaooow!

― ennui soundsystem, Monday, 16 May 2011 16:51 (3 hours ago) Bookmark

bears repeating. it kind of terrifies me to note that shantie had never heard that riddim before then, or at least i think so!

yeah this is fair dos i think - i still collect them out of habit (it is sometimes fun to see how difficult doing a marcus set really is) but it's only really the vocal cuts ('never say bye' plz santa) i lust to own

agree also that the yonkers remix is never not lame to hear but i'd still rate a dub version in fairness
