500 is pretty damned limited... That's like the amount a local band would press, hardly enough for a North American or Worldwide release. But if they've had problems selling off bigger amounts I can't really blame them...

yeah, I'm just bummed because I've been waiting for some gridlink vinyl. love the format for grindcore on a personal level. fond memories of many afternoons spent sitting around playing tons of grind and hardcore 7"s, etc. but I guess I didn't get the memo about this one and it seems like it already sold out. whadda drag.
and hydrahead just seem to play up the pricey but limited thing a little bit more than I'd like. can't say I blame em. gotta make money somehow these days. just sucks when this stuff sells out in the blink of an eye and I've been waiting for this particular release for a while now.

thrashcore/grind 7"s evoke a lot of happy memories for me as well.. :)
Love it when the whole sleeve folds out to be a gruesome poster.

hydrahead are usually pretty good with represses though, right?
― pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 22:39 (2 years ago) Permalink
It looks like this one was marketed as a 500-copy limited run. But surely they can get around that and press more on different coloured vinyl or something, or simply not include the karaoke version of the album that was packaged with the first run.

I mean, if they've sold out so fast clearly the demand is there. So rather than economising to ensure they're not stuck with remaindered stock, they're kinda shooting themselves in the foot by not pressing more. They are a proper label, after all, not some bedroom CDR operation with covers made from felt and old socks.
― wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Tuesday, 19 April 2011 23:44 (2 years ago) Permalink
(To be clear, I had been thinking that 500 copies seemed a lot for the type of band this is. But in hindsight I really think Hydra Head underestimated the demand, assuming the Hayaino audience and the grind audience were the same.)

yeah, I mean grind is a ridiculously narrow niche but the discordance axis connection alone is HUGE. total legends.

scored some gridlink vinyl from aquarius records if anyone is still looking!

I haven't heard any of the new Weekend Nachos yet but I dig the cover; it's completely at odds with the genre conventions:

oh yeah, just posted to the rolling metal thread about this one. on my first listen right now. like it!
and yeah, I'm into that cover.

some dudes from The Endless Blockade have a new band called Column of Heaven, anything they do is worth hearing imho
here is a photo of their demo tapes on top of some books which I daresay just happened to be sitting there

kinda love the name tbh. I'll take humor where I can get it with this genre.

new ANS/ramming speed split LP is totally great thrash/d-beat; ramming speed don't take themselves seriously at all (sample song titles: "pizza party," "shane embury is the brad pitt of grindcore," etc) and are much better off/more fun for it

Saw Psycho/Afternoon Gentlemen/Human Junk last night, good show but once again rather under-attended.
Afternoon Gentlemen pretty killer grind with 2 bassists, definitely going to check them out further.
Psycho were great too, super cool guys as well, got their entire discography across 3 CDs, nice after just having the mp3s for years.

I just read about The Afternoon Gentlemen in MRR. Will be checking out their stuff.
Anyone going to see Wormrot on tour soon? They're playing a two-day fest in Dublin in September with Doom and a bunch of other hardcore, crust and grind bands. Haven't actually been to a grind gig yet (Napalm Death excepted) so I'm looking forward to it!
Listening to the Psudoku album out on 625 right now, it's pretty fantastic on first pass.

caught doom with dropdead about a month ago. they were fun but played waaaaaay too long. there's a reason most grind albums are about 20-30 min.
dropdead were pretty amazing tbh.

I should not that I'm not v familiar with the doom catalog.

uh, "note" that is
Wormrot are fantastic live. You're gonna have a blast (no pun intended).

Saw Doom last year and they were awesome, would love to see them again. Didn't think they played too long at all, but then I am pretty familiar with their catalog :)

Super into the akbk album now that I've heard it. Like a really freakin tight band grindin it out while a noisier greg ginn solos off to the side. The songwriting is a cut above and material that could have come off as a disjointed, proggy mess in lesser hands really shines here. It all flows even with the occasional curveball but all with a fine layer of guitar skree lathered on top and subverting your expectations. Which is key!
Get this!!
― (⊙_⊙?) (Alan N), Saturday, 23 July 2011 22:26 (1 year ago) Permalink
^^^kind of cliched-sounding now that I'm reading that back. I'm no writer but I just want to make this one sound cool. because it is!
― (⊙_⊙?) (Alan N), Sunday, 24 July 2011 00:56 (1 year ago) Permalink
also doing a bit of a disservice to focus on the guitar noise. it's the most novel aspect the band has going for it but hardly the only thing worth writing about. the drumming is particularly strong and always compliments the action here.
also a fan of the vox. often trading off between low growls and high shrieks but always with a ton of reverb on top. some delay effects here-and-there as well. struggling to think of a comparison... maybe incantation for the lower growls? that doesn't quite get at it but they are similarly atmospheric.
and, in general, there are nods to black metal but nothing too overt. I personally appreciate that they don't overdo it. lots of newer hardcore bands blending in bm can strike me as ham-fisted. but I'm cool with the occasional frostbitten riff which is what we have right here.

So what's this about Shane from Phobia being "the Ike Turner of grindcore" (according to ANb's Jay Randall)?
― wronger than 100 geir posts (MacDara), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 17:25 (1 year ago) Permalink
From the ANb Twitter account: ""Shane Phobia is the Ike Turner of grindcore, long history of beating girls up when he's drunk and if you think that's cool -we ain't... Gave Shane Phobia plenty of time to figure out what he and his brother owed us and to stop bootleggin'/selling our shit on ebay -times up!...Shane Phobia went ahead with doing ANB merch without working a deal with us first and has I guess sold it for years now without paying us a dime... So glad I've been unknowingly contributing to this fuckin' piece of shit crust punks beer fund for years now -fuck Shane Phobia."
