harbl, Friday, 12 December 2008 13:35 (fifteen years ago) link

this represents an internal struggle. you are trying to fit into some picture of what your life should be that is inappropriate. you may also have unresolved oedipal issues.

very quotatious (tehresa), Friday, 12 December 2008 14:58 (fifteen years ago) link

you should probably kill your mother, too. just to be safe.

last night i dreamt that i saw a norfolk island pine growing out of a crack in the sidewalk. i got excited until i realized that it was just a palm tree. what does that mean.

Lingbert, Monday, 15 December 2008 20:22 (fifteen years ago) link

a brilliant career in magic awaits you!

very quotatious (tehresa), Monday, 15 December 2008 20:26 (fifteen years ago) link

To see lush green trees in your dream, symbolizes new hopes, growth, desires, knowledge, and life. Because the tree changed from one kind to another, it means that you think you desire one thing, but unconsciously desire something else, or that what you think you desire is not at all what you think it is. What is your impression of the two different types of tree?

very quotatious (tehresa), Monday, 15 December 2008 20:31 (fifteen years ago) link

i really like norfolk island pines. they look bizarre and fake. also, they are related to monkey puzzles.

the palm was some kind of fan palm, and i find fan palms to be one of the least interesting trees around. i guess it depends on the context, maybe. like if i'm out in a desert area and see large groups of really tall palms, that can look cool. but in general, i feel like an ornamental palm tree in someone's yard is the boringest shit.

Lingbert, Monday, 15 December 2008 20:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Perhaps you are trying to see a norfolk pine in someone or something that is really a palm. or, you think you desire a the elaborate craziness of the moneky-like norfolk pine, when you secretly desire the banal comfort of a simple pine.

very quotatious (tehresa), Monday, 15 December 2008 20:50 (fifteen years ago) link

norfolk island pines aren't even actual pines! and palms technically aren't even trees! this dream has so many layers of complexity i'm glad i have astute people like you around tehresa.

but that is a good question: who is my norfolk island pine

Lingbert, Monday, 15 December 2008 20:59 (fifteen years ago) link

who is my fan palm disguised as a norfolk island pine

Lingbert, Monday, 15 December 2008 21:00 (fifteen years ago) link

who is my Washingtonia robusta(filifera?) disguised as a Araucaria heterophylla

Lingbert, Monday, 15 December 2008 21:01 (fifteen years ago) link

are you my fan palm in disguise? (Seattle)

lingbert what is the best tree

harbl, Monday, 15 December 2008 21:31 (fifteen years ago) link

you think you desire a the elaborate craziness of the moneky-like norfolk pine, when you secretly desire the banal comfort of a simple pine

should say "the comfort of a simple PALM" not pine. i hope my errant sentence has not thrown you for a loop. i am quite dissatisfied that i've surely damaged my credibility through careless typographical errors. nevertheless i hope your craigslist replies are as titillating as the ones i receive!

very quotatious (tehresa), Monday, 15 December 2008 21:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Often our typos reveal more about our mental states than what we actually intend to say. Perhaps, Tehresa, you are "pining" for a long-lost friend, lover, or relative. Do you have a hard time letting go?

harbl the best tree.....it depends. 2 favorite trees in my neighborhood:
1) it's either a plane tree or a sycamore/plane tree hybrid. i don't know. but the trunk it looks like it had started to melt but then hardened again.
2) there's the century old oak in the park near me that overlooks elliott bay and the elliott bay grain terminal. the grain terminal makes this constant noise which makes it really relaxing to sit under the oak tree, which has a solid presence on its own anyway

others:

big fan of monkey puzzle trees in general.

the wollemi pine (which isn't actually a pine and is in the same family as the monkey puzzle) which looks cool anyway, but was known only from the fossil record until someone found a small stand of them growing in australia. this is the bark:
http://www.wollemipine.com/images/photos_large/Bark-detail--WP-15-14.jpg

there's a tree i can't remember the name of that "walks" over a long period of time. it is on stilt-like roots, and some grow outward while others, if i remember correctly, eventually die off so that the tree gradually changes its location.

i really like weeping sequoias. they are the goofiest looking things. like cousin it trees or something. regular sequoias are generally very straight with very uniform crowns, but weeping sequoias look like a fuck up. they're shaggy and grow and curve in funny angles.

big fan of the kalaloch cedar over on the olympic peninsula. it's like 1,000 years old, probably more, can't remember. really gnarly and strange looking.

and the japanese red lace maple which i can't find a good picture of (but once i saw one with awesome red/plum leaves and green stalks - it was a youngin).

there is something very striking about the second cherry tree photo, tehresa.

birchbark/paperbark cherry trees have crazy bark, especially on younger trees or branches. it's very shiny and smooth and feels like plastic. eg the one on the left in this pic: http://oregonstate.edu/dept/ldplants/images/prse2122.jpg

harbl what is the best tree iyo

Lingbert, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 18:03 (fifteen years ago) link

tehresa i can't see your unavailable photo but is that from highland park? it had some great trees and statues

harbl, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 23:31 (fifteen years ago) link

lingbery i can't name species like you but i like a lot of different types of trees. my neighborhood has a lot of flowering trees: apples, cherries, magnolia etc. but i also like huge mega-tall pine trees. i am having trouble thinking of which is the best tree. maybe it will come to me in a dream and dr. freud will sort it out.

harbl, Tuesday, 16 December 2008 23:37 (fifteen years ago) link

yes, harbl it was from highland!
i miss living walking distance from that park (but really nothing else about rochester)

there is something very striking about the second cherry tree photo, tehresa.

lol it has been favorited by 4 strangers! i am not sure i get it... it seems washed out?
