For that one, I desaturated, but left the "don't saturate skin tones" button checked in iPhoto, cuz I liked the effect.

Great stuff recently from everyone.

Three snaps, one film and two digital, reinforcing the mundanity of my life...

River #728 by celluloidpropaganda, on Flickr

I've taken to putting my camera on a high speed framerate and the setting where the camera uses all 51 focus points to pick focus for me when I play with River. This time the autofocus picked her saliva at the bottom of the frame (best if viewed large-ish) as the point to focus on, which seems to be entirely too appropriate.

I didn't think much of the photos on took on Alcatraz at the time (storm rolling in, everything was dull and dark) but it's looking better in B&W.
Did this one in the regular 35mm 2x3 format, then decided to crop it to 8x10 - I think I like the 8x10 better since the sky lacks character.

I think you're right - try as I might, I couldn't do anything with the uppermost sky (someday I'll learn to dodge and burn as effectively in LR/PS/SEP as in a darkroom, but it doesn't appear to be coming soon).

I'm going to start tagging some photos to the ILXOR and ILP group.

hey guys, vaguely embarrassing request:

there's a photo contest i'm thinking about entering (local medical publication), and i'm trying to narrow it down. if, in one of your quieter moments, you felt like suggesting something, it'd be much appreciated

where do UK people get B/W film developed these days? i just finished my last roll, but apparently since i last shot one (2005?) snappy snaps went bust.

caek, Monday, 9 May 2011 18:18 (thirteen years ago) link

You mean yr local branch of Snappy Snaps? Cos they're still going strong. Expensive though - I've only had a couple of B&W rolls developed there and thankfully someone else was paying...

I'm fortunate to have branches of Jessops and Jacobs close to where I work, so I just use them. Expect to pay £10+ though for non-C41 B&W dev/print/scan. You can probably send away and have it done better/cheaper - check the back pages of Amateur Photographer.

Nothin' special, but just trying to dig something good out of opportunistic snaps of late; if the kids won't cooperate for the camera, grab a detail while they're distracted, etc...

Not sure I've got any non-C41 film loaded in any cameras right now but I'd definitely be interested next time around (prob a few weeks at the rate at which I shoot film). Thanks!

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 10:40 (thirteen years ago) link

haha dayo, i will try jessops but if they are charging crazy money then i might take you up on that!

tbh a bit baffled about what's actually on the roll (hp5). it came from old camera that's been in storage for like 5 years. there is a photo of me taking a picture of my baby brother with it. he is now 5 and i assume that picture is on the roll, but apart from the that and the ~5 i shot at a wedding last weekend i have no idea. ha. film!

caek, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 14:17 (thirteen years ago) link

I've just inherited a 1959 Ilford Sportsman II from a friend - it had a roll of (12 exp!) Kodakcolor 100 in it, so who knows what's on that. The lens looks very fogged so I'll run a 24exp roll of Agfa Vista 200 through it (which seemed to be the free roll of choice back when I was shooting only film, I've got loads of it - probably from Welwyn branch of PhotoOptix, circa 2000-01) and see what - if anything - I get.

Oh, my! Amazing colours.

I have decided to raid my hard-drive archives bung one photo per month (starting from Jan 2007) each day on my Facebook wall. No kids, no friends (those photos aren't Public on Flickr so they probably shouldn't be on FB at all). Trying to avoid stuff that I know is already on Flickr (but mostly failing so far). This is partly because Lightroom 3.x comes with Publish To Facebook and I couldn't resist using it for *something* (despite the dreadful FB compression).

Nothing special about this (and apologies for the fake borders), but I finally dusted off the Bronica SQ-A the other night. Finished off a roll of Provia 400F and then fiddled with the Polaroid back for about 5min, trying to remember how I was supposed to set up the camera to use. Wasted one print, got this on the second attempt:

Don't usually put photos of the kids on this board, but this one is a bit different. Mostly I'm posting it cos I almost wiped it - lost in the masses of recent kids' party pictures, I hadn't noticed that this card had undownloaded pix on it...
