Yeah, without trying to turn this into a thing about race, I always forget just how homophobic large portions of the African-American community are.

I mean, yeah, plenty of homophobes of all races, but there is an ingrained cultural thing in the African-American community that rears its head when stuff like this happens.

communities that feel threatened demographically are usually pretty homophobic and anti-abortion. it's like a self-preservation/MUST PROCREATE AT ALL COSTS kind of thinking

(and yeah duh obviously not unique to black community)

Do you ever just lay off dude? I'm sorry, I'll try to talk to my friend who teaches minority studies to provide me with specific references I can cite next time.

if you dont want this to be a thing about race, dont bring race up!

J0rdan S., Thursday, 7 April 2011 21:51 (thirteen years ago) link

maybe we can somehow merge this really fruitful discussion with sarahel's investigation into the downlow community?

J0rdan S., Thursday, 7 April 2011 21:52 (thirteen years ago) link

maybe we could just drop it for a change?

fat fat fat fat Usher (DJP), Thursday, 7 April 2011 21:52 (thirteen years ago) link

jeezo anyway i just thought it was sad to see all these hip hop fans on twitter making #mrcee jokes and basically shitting on the poor dude.

^^^ otm

Sorry guys, I'll drop it and, yeah, I guess I shouldn't have mentioned it in the first place. But to try and pretend that race has absolutely nothing to do with homophobia in hip-hop is on some pretty huge blinders on shit. Not that this is the right place to hold such a discussion, but, still.

This is all you need to have said.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 7 April 2011 21:56 (thirteen years ago) link

WTF. Its a legitimate issue that ties in directly to what this thread is all about!

smh

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 7 April 2011 21:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, without trying to turn this into a thing about race you are probably right.

caek, Thursday, 7 April 2011 21:59 (thirteen years ago) link

You guys are so fucking infuriating sometimes.

you are trying really hard not to turn this into a thing about race! and i appreciate that

ℯℳℴ ❤\(◕~◕✿ (some dude), Thursday, 7 April 2011 22:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm just confused is all. Iirc, nothing I said was offensive or inflammatory.

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 7 April 2011 22:06 (thirteen years ago) link

yes it was actually

I don't really know what is more infuriating:

- watching the social construct of hip-hop culture equated with the larger social construct of the African-American community
- watching a social attitude within that community get linked especially to both that social construct and that genetic group, even though it also exists in most every (if not every, no qualifiers) other ethnic social construct in the country
- as a member of that community, getting relegated to invisible man status by the asshole making pronouncements about me

fat fat fat fat Usher (DJP), Thursday, 7 April 2011 22:08 (thirteen years ago) link

like, there are plenty of ways to talk about homophobia in hip-hop without making a "not to be all about race, but it bums me out that this is what black people do" comment that even five seconds of thought could have led you to

fat fat fat fat Usher (DJP), Thursday, 7 April 2011 22:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Okay, its just been on my mind because I was having dinner with this weekend with a friend that lectures on these very topics and she was filling me in on the long history of homophobia in the African-American community. Iirc, my posts above clarified that homophobes were found in all sorts of groups!

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 7 April 2011 22:10 (thirteen years ago) link

I mean, my post came from a genuince place, whether it came out that way or not. I had a legitimate discussion about this the other night and I've been thinking about it since.

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 7 April 2011 22:10 (thirteen years ago) link

what does a "long history of homophobia" even look like

bernard snowy, Thursday, 7 April 2011 22:11 (thirteen years ago) link

America, basically

fat fat fat fat Usher (DJP), Thursday, 7 April 2011 22:12 (thirteen years ago) link

ya I was gonna say
seems like it would be basically indistinguishable from a "long history of living in a nation where homosexuality is criminalized/otherwise not tolerated"

bernard snowy, Thursday, 7 April 2011 22:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Alright, I was trying to bring up what I thought was a valid discussion in relation to the Mister Cee incident and this topic in general, apparently I framed it horribly. I'm sorry.

'what are you, the Hymen Protection League of America?' (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 7 April 2011 22:13 (thirteen years ago) link

I am a White Lesbian Rapper. I just Finished my first song Touche'D. I am working with Matt Dr. Fink Formerly of Prince. He is helping me and we are writting beats together. I however maintain my own spacing and aranging or my lyrics. My second song is going to be callled Fine Like Wine.

Touche'D talk about a girl I was once close to and how shes acting shady on me now "So When are you gonna come and see me HU? when youve filled you girlfriend quota? Travled all over the world but Minnesota? Dont matter if I say pop or soda... Dont matter if you say Hella or really cuz years from now Im still gonna be me. Only differance is you might not see me cuz when you cant have me sure wanna be with me... no wanna be seen with me? better look in the mirror before you turn Touche'D ... Touche' Lady , take a hit flip the script and become slim shady.. dont matter if your dating a B**ch or a ladie cuz when you wanna ask me out im gonna say maybe"

Sone of the topics I talk about on my upcoming CD White Lesbian Rapper will be Lesbian topics such as: Hurt by ex gfs, a song about Jeeps (popular gay automobile), lesbian trends such as Jocks and abercrombie and Fitch jeans, with girls in pony tails, being broke, kinky cop sex, complation of naming of old school song titles talking about all the songs that remind you of one person from back in the day.

I told a friend a few months ago to perform an experiment: imagine listening to songs, 97% of which are not written by, for, or to you.

Hey Look More Than Five Years Has Passed And You Have A C (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 7 April 2011 22:15 (thirteen years ago) link

"a song about Jeeps (popular gay automobile)"
lmfao

bernard snowy, Thursday, 7 April 2011 22:15 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm just bummed because I truly meant this from a good place and I'm catching a lot of flak, when other posters have spouted a lot of intentionally hateful stuff without this much abuse for it.

this board has a long sad history of jonophobia, but at this point I don't know if there's anything any one of us can do about it, it's a pretty institutionalized mentality
