Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 20:40 (fifteen years ago) link

Heh heh, thanks for the new screen name...

Is it The Lex who doesn't acknowledge the presence of any culture before 1997? Or am I mixing him up with someone else?

carrotcake.wav (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 20:51 (fifteen years ago) link

school of seven bells > portishead > laura marling > santogold > hercules and love affair > hot chip > scarlett johansson

these are the only albums on the list which aren't totally worthless. it's good going, considering.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 10 December 2008 22:38 (fifteen years ago) link

No Earth, Torche, Growing , Harvey Milk or Grails no credibility.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 22:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Don't suppose (m)any will vote for it but that Spiritualized album was very good and way better than I expected.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 23:13 (fifteen years ago) link

I suppose the same can be said of the verve album

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 11 December 2008 00:04 (fifteen years ago) link

Finally got round to listening to the poxy Foals album, sounds like they've nicked all their songs off Q And Not U and slung in a bit of Pigbag for good measure. Enjoyed some of it, always been a sucker for trebly guitars and skittering drums, but I got a bit naffed off with the singer.

NickB, Thursday, 11 December 2008 09:14 (fifteen years ago) link

didnt care much for them

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 11 December 2008 12:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Seeing Spz live put me off every wanting to listen to another note of their records ever again!

carrotcake.wav (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 11 December 2008 13:54 (fifteen years ago) link

Admit it, you went to that gig determined not to like it!

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 11 December 2008 14:05 (fifteen years ago) link

Not true! I went to that gig as excited as could be, I wore my silver spacejacket and everything, went and got a good spot in front of one of the pillars so I could see... and, as D observed "that was the quickest I've ever seen you go from bouncey to retching in my life!" I was excited by reports that it was the best live show they'd done in years! Those reports were wrong!

But anyway, this is not the thread for this.

carrotcake.wav (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 11 December 2008 14:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Well it's still a good album.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 11 December 2008 16:23 (fifteen years ago) link

WHICH GINGER IS HOTTER?!?!?!

Hercules & LA win this by a mile too.

BLAP BLAP (Roberto Spiralli) (sic), Thursday, 11 December 2008 23:41 (fifteen years ago) link

And best tranny. So I voted them.

Enrique (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 11 December 2008 23:58 (fifteen years ago) link

djmartian, Friday, 12 December 2008 16:39 (fifteen years ago) link

Bit of a slump round about #40 and I haven't heard most of the Norwegian ones but by Geir's standards that's not too bad a list!

Brother Belcher (Marcello Carlin), Friday, 12 December 2008 16:41 (fifteen years ago) link

I still love that Marit Larsen album, it would be in my list definitely. Also Geir likes Sebastien Tellier! Awesome.

Matt DC, Friday, 12 December 2008 16:44 (fifteen years ago) link

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Friday, 12 December 2008 17:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Not heard the Black Kids album, are they really that bad?

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 13 December 2008 00:11 (fifteen years ago) link

The NME really, really should be all over the Gang Gang Dance record...it's their wet dream.

Mister Craig, Saturday, 13 December 2008 00:23 (fifteen years ago) link

Obviously it isn't. Maybe next year..

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 13 December 2008 01:10 (fifteen years ago) link

12 Crystal Castles Crystal Castles

^ and even this album I wouldn't put on a best-of list

have u ever seen a 77 with a butterfly door (Curt1s Stephens), Saturday, 13 December 2008 01:17 (fifteen years ago) link

apart from Q, Mojo, Word and about 5 others

I was unaware these magazines were to releasing Best of Lists for 2008; I thought they would be focusing on 1988 or 1998 as usual.

I've just had a good chuckle at the write up for the Oasis album in this poll. By 'chuckle' I mean fighting the urge to kick something violently across the room.

DavidM, Saturday, 13 December 2008 11:46 (fifteen years ago) link

only heard three of these:

portishead an obvious and effortless winner; mogwai nipping at their heels but out of breath; fucked up limping along half a mile or so behind.

m the g, Saturday, 13 December 2008 12:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 00:01 (fifteen years ago) link

there is one good album on this list and it's hercules and love affair.

although portishead's 'third' was decent enough
