my Kombucha died :(

it'd been brewing stronger & stronger for 8 months, then in december one brew came out weaker, and the next one after that, the culture was no longer floating on the surface, sinking dying

so I called the friends I'd given my Kombucha babies out to, to see if I could get one in return, and all three of them had the same story. none of us keep our kitchens heated and it's been a very very cold winter, is the theory, but now we are without our cultures

this is what Mindy Kaling has to say about kombucha: "man, it is expensive, and also it kind of tastes like an alcoholic is peeing in your mouth."

sorry, kombucha lovers.

There is also one report of Kombucha becoming infected with anthrax and passing along the infection to an individual who rubbed it on his skin to alleviate pain. Apparently, anthrax from nearby cows got into the Kombucha mixture and grew luxuriantly.

this is my kombucha alternative

2 pints whole milk
4 tablespoons malt powder
3 tablespoons sugar
6 shots whisky
2 vanilla pods, scored and the seeds scraped out

Heat up the milk and whisk in the malt, sugar to taste, whisky, vanilla seeds and pods. Whisk up, then, if you have a cappuccino frother, whiz up to make some lovely froth.

this was the first one i tried, and i cant do it. the only berry one i like is gingerberry, and i think that largely succeeds on the basis of the ginger cutting down the acidity of the berry juice...

I stand by my earlier post that enzymes and bacteria in plain yogurt and fermented soy/tofu (sorry to get all j-food but: natto, tofuyo, etc.) are more healthy for you than kombucha.

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 17:10 (sixteen years ago) link

i can't really get down with the natto. can't they just make a delicious beer that has all the necessary enzymes?

bell_labs, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 17:13 (sixteen years ago) link

i feel like i can perceive the effects of kombucha better than those of yogurt, though!

give me back my kombucha damn you all

Local overpriced upscale grocery has lots of kombucha brands still. I want one right about now.

postmodern infidel(ity) (mh), Saturday, 19 June 2010 14:18 (thirteen years ago) link

It's not hard to make.If you don't think the health benefits are worth $4/tiny bottle (they aren't) you can make it and check the potential benefits for free. I have plenty of mothers to give away but I make mine in gallon jars so the girls have a large surface area. Takes a while to get the hang of it-vinegary home kombucha is dud. I'm still alive 2.5 years after doc expected me to croak so kombucha and NN diet get a big a+ from me. Also weed. Also neti. 3/3 for this board apparently.

i've had great success making kombucha (it's easy), and i think it tastes better than GT's. if anyone in nyc wants a mother i can give you one.

three weeks pass...

speaking of wings i am late to the party but my hungover self bought some overpriced organic chicken wings and assorted marbled cheeses at whole foods this morning JUST TO GET A $3 GINGERADE. of course i am late to the party (do keep up) so i was cursing at the pee water coco vita replacement. the hirsute cashier informed me that the FDA has banned all kombucha sales because they weren't able to control alcohol levels in it.

i'm relieved to see Synergy's business model isn't completely dead in the water, but i'm not paying $7 at a bodega.

I am now hooked on this. It's a big city drink though. Not available in small towns. Tried Synergy and Buddah's Brew and love it! LOVE IT!

*tera, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 06:25 (eleven years ago) link

However, started to feel mildly sicky and felt grumpy in a weird way today. Read about detoxing etc and figured I had some of that going on since I juice too.

bilberry flav is rly good ... i bought it as a wild impulse, i am v surprised. it is multigreenesque !

schlump, Tuesday, 12 July 2016 23:08 (seven years ago) link

i rly wd appreciate some guidance on what else is good since it is such a Flavor Universe now. i had hibiscus ginger which is only okay. also i went to SF & saw a double-size bottle of gingerade. very powerful scene.

schlump, Tuesday, 12 July 2016 23:10 (seven years ago) link

all the supermarkets here are at war & it has pushed the price of supermarket-provenance-GTS down to a citywide $3. wonderful. just a great time to be alive.

schlump, Tuesday, 12 July 2016 23:11 (seven years ago) link

i also read this
http://www.inc.com/magazine/201503/tom-foster/the-king-of-kombucha.html
sort of expecting the guy to be unbearable but eventually feeling moved to write a long whitmanesque cycle of poems in his honour. he is like a kind of 21c johnny appleseed character almost. a new age fermentation-centric john henry.

schlump, Tuesday, 12 July 2016 23:12 (seven years ago) link

i also saw a v g william leavitt film where one of the characters is describing a sports drink with kombucha in, & another character says, kombucha?, as in like [that fermented drink ???], & the guy says, yes!,

it's slime energy!

so now i think of kombucha as slime energy

his parents were into lotus position sex and had a spiritual advisor and couldn't come up with something better than george thomas dave? very fishy

El Tomboto, Thursday, 14 July 2016 23:43 (seven years ago) link

not comfortable w the distortion involved in 'three first names in a row', this not crazy compared to the norm of ... two first names in a row; it is the first name as a last name that is the punctum here. but also-

i gt dave is cool
ii if one were to look for weirdnesses abt him i feel like there is richer terrain, cf the artice describing his appearance as somewhat 'photoshopped'
