What is Dave Matthews listening to? Matthews tells us about Xiu Xiu, the experimental indie project of Californian singer-songwriter Jamie Stewart, who, Matthews says, Tim Reynolds turned him on to. “There’s something about it where you can’t put it down,” he says. “It’s like crazy person music, but it’s really slammin’ and it’s really beautiful. He’s a little bit precious maybe — and ‘a little bit’ may be understating it — but there’s something about it that I go back and I listen to it again, and I like it.”

i think i saw a commercial during college football where Dave Matthews Band is part of a contest where the college that votes for him the most through text-messaging gets a free concert from DMB. He can't possibly be that popular, still?

Listening to DMB at work, it occurred to me that their songs could be much improved by simply ommitting the clarinet and piccolo or whatever woodwinds they are using.

So I'm watching a little bit of this documentary on IFC called "Before the Music Dies." The filmmakers travelled around the U.S. trying to find out why mainstream music is so packaged and repetitive, and whether the major labels are able to silence innovation. Up comes a clip of Dave Matthews, and I assumed this was an illustration of this bland, "packaged and repetitive" music that's so common. I was wrong. They were used as an example of one of the few, truly innovative bands that broke through the corporate oppression and got their music out to the masses. Huh? WHy, because there's a violin on stage?

I don't like Dave Matthews at all - his voice grates and the lyrics* make me want to hit myself in the head with a brick - but when they first broke through on the radio, it did seem pretty unusual and innovative. Or at least they stuck out like a sore thumb.
I haven't actively listened to Dave Matthews in 10+ years and I'm not making any plans to, but I suspect I'd be alright with them if an album of instrumental versions were to turn up.

Jason "Buzz" Schechtman, (perpetually) 19, Deerfield, Ill., a student at IU, got his tickets about 8 p.m. after waiting more than three hours. He met folks in line who said they'd left the Clinton rally to wait for tickets. "I was leaning toward Obama, but this sealed the deal for sure," he said.

Doing something outside the norm of what they're known for, the Nappy Roots are crossing genres in the New Year. Their latest is group member Skinny Deville's new collaboration with the Dave Matthews Band.
On their new single, titled "A Divine Intervention At 55th," the group crosses sounds between rock and hip-hop. How did it happen? Well, Deville said the team up came about after the two hooked up while on tour, an experience he said he can barely explain.
"I was high every hour back then and I have never seen anything like it [touring and performing with the Dave Matthews Band]," said Skinny Deville. "People were camped out as if it was a KOA Campground. We did two nights in each city because of the attendance. I do remember the food was excellent and the beer was cold [backstage with DMB]. They balled out more than the biggest rapper could have. We had one bus and they had like ten black matching buses, with every member of the band having their own bus. They were baller status for real."

Those "only jealous because they sell" comments are particularly funny, considering a large portion of the ILM posters are into stuff that is considerably more mainstream (as in appealing to really young kids and everything) than Dave Matthews has ever been.

It's a good thing it wasn't Dave Matthews himself, as they'd have to change the name to just 'The Band', and I think that's already taken.
