Ahhh!!! What is it? My phone won't tell me. It's brill. Love the slightly lethargic sounding beat.

I don't have to listen to that to know that every track is good.

Tim F, Thursday, 31 March 2011 22:02 (thirteen years ago) link

contra Titchy I really hope Marcus lifts himself out of his funk of "deep dubby house" soon and goes back to this style + bangers.

Tim F, Thursday, 31 March 2011 22:03 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah fairly often the first hours of his shows still just about have that tension, and then nearly always the first sunday roast track to arrive is the harbinger of tedium.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tth9A-K-0g

irony of ironies this is v good of course.

r|t|c, Thursday, 31 March 2011 22:14 (thirteen years ago) link

There was about a 15 minute section of his recent show with Majestic when this refined tribal house sound worked really well, like that great Cooly G Rinse set from 2009 only with an MC, but 80% of the time it's just like, "this is nice but why would i go out of my way for it?"

Tim F, Thursday, 31 March 2011 22:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Still all about Screama's Never Say Bye. Demon squiggly synths!

matt damon & the jb's (the anephric project), Friday, 1 April 2011 02:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Always all about that tune. Best synths ever.

Tim F, Friday, 1 April 2011 03:26 (thirteen years ago) link

had to make a sample of this as i couldn't let it pass unnoticed. bashment crossover is definitely my favourite aspect of funky.

Equiknoxx - Jim Screechie (Funkystepz Remix)
http://www.zshare.net/audio/8849065859cfa06f/

standard funkystepz treatment. ascending synth, pianos, thicker bassline. so vibesy.

ory, Friday, 1 April 2011 07:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Have any of you guys seen Marcus Nasty in a club? Its like its a diffrent guy that turns up and not in a good way. He sucks hard, every time I've seen him he plays bait played out tunes and can't mix. I don't understand it. Its put me off tuning into him on the radio now-a-days. When you've got guys like Ill Blu, Funkystepz, Petchy, etc doing their thing Marcus just isn't that essential anymore. But that show looks like a good'un so I'm getting on it haha

jimitheexploder, Friday, 1 April 2011 08:29 (thirteen years ago) link

even at fwd? i still havent seen him play in a club. one time i went to see him play at fwd there he didnt turn up. then i went to beyond once and couldnt be bothered waiting for him to come on so i left lol.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 1 April 2011 11:08 (thirteen years ago) link

i almost feel a lot of what marcus seems to play on rinse these days has too high production values at the expense of the raw energy he used to like.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 1 April 2011 11:15 (thirteen years ago) link

I've not seen him at FWD>> so I don't know. He's played Ruffage Sessions though which was a quality night ran by the Hessle Audio guys in Leeds for years. Then somewhere else I can't remember. Both times the other DJs on the bill out did him big time. Pretty sure Ben UFO played more upfront UK funky dubplates than Marcus that night.

last night i heard shortstuff referred to as a "future bass" producer

Yeah this tune is good. Sunday Roast are pretty decent at vocal tunes - e.g. "After All This Time".

I was pretty O_O at this tune:

Zarif - Over (Toby IOI Remix)

Tim F, Monday, 4 April 2011 12:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Judging by the two Mike Delinquent remixes on Signal's (great) new mix he's gone full-fledged 2-step...

Tim F, Monday, 4 April 2011 13:34 (thirteen years ago) link

V. pleased to ID Eastwood's ace "I Wanna Be The Man" too.

Tim F, Monday, 4 April 2011 13:35 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm really intrigued - listening to this music fresh - why the tribal divides between funky and dubstep. to my ears (old and untutored in this music they may be), ill blu seem to merge both, and link back to dancehall with the drumbeats.

jeez i know i sound like a nerd.

nultybutnice (whatever), Monday, 4 April 2011 20:43 (thirteen years ago) link

fair play to mike delinquent for making hay while the sun shines (and how!) but he has damn near wrung the magic right out of the og & best 'traktor' remix :/

get a budding crazy cousinz vibe from wireless sound's producer, one to watch i feel.

15. Andy Jay & S-Tee – Crunk V.I.P.

gaaaaahhhhh love this riddim so unreservedly

just that little extra buzzsaw wobble unleashes something totally wild

r|t|c, Monday, 4 April 2011 22:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Ill Blu do sound a bit like dubstep at times, but it seems largely inadvertent to me, an odd side-effect of their jacking old-meets-nu-Belgian brutalism.

For its part dubstep got its tribal phase out of the way back in about 2004 or so.

^^ dunno what to think about this yet. the descending xylophone line's lovely in that 'sunday showers' kinda way, but the strings seem too, err, forceful?

don't remember ever listenin' to this, also : http://soundcloud.com/the-fives/feels-good

^^ 'playground' = love it. i was talking about an actual release (EP or something...). my fav. uk funky producer(s?), most likely ('twiss', 'pachi', 'in the morning', 'polyfunk', etc. are all great)

smi's '60 hz' sounds nothing like dj eastwood's 'toilet blocker', it's true

Here's something I don't really understand. As lovely as "Deep in the Valley" is, how did that get an official release, but "Midnight Affair" never did?

since we're on dis frankenting, what ARE we thinking about that donaeo then? i feel like he should have unimpressed me - but i like it anyway!

like it'll only be an artistic failure if it fails commercially? (what a strange thing to type).

r|t|c, Wednesday, 13 April 2011 22:29 (thirteen years ago) link

It's not as bang out the gates as his last couple of singles but I love the groove, need to listen to Donaeo's song on top more to decide what I think of it but I remember being cautiously approving.

Definitely one of those songs ripe for validation for commercial success.

Lol at this thread becoming primarily about official releases and the ill blu thread becoming about radio sets. Poor Lex :'(

I've been having computer troubles the last few weeks so not had chance to catch many sets has Petchy been on Live at all on sat nights? He seemed to disapear for a while and I've not had chance to lock since.

jimitheexploder, Thursday, 21 April 2011 15:29 (thirteen years ago) link

the dutch thing... not sure its that good an influence at the moment. to me its just a re-hash of blog house with a little swing. Every other track sounds like pon de floor with better drum programing at this point. That is a bonus cos its a stale track in need of a little bounce but... I sware everyone this side of 2000 was bored of blog house until I started to hear it on funky radio with that funky swing. Its been something thats bugged me ever since I went to an electro/blog house night a few years back and every other track had bait re-hashes of funky drums in them. I was wondering if electro would filter one way or funky the other...

jimitheexploder, Friday, 22 April 2011 23:12 (thirteen years ago) link

What are you referring to apart from Ill Blu and, like, Seany B's remix of Bassjackers, etc?

"pon de floor with better drum programing" sounds like a good deal to me, in theory at least.

Tim F, Saturday, 23 April 2011 00:05 (thirteen years ago) link

Its that Bassjacker vibe you have the whiny synths the bait drum edits the stright house kick drums.

Ill Blu play the influence well, really well better than the genre itself prob.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llX89iV69j8

Carnao does it well but its getting to that point wher its reaching towards bait elector rather than anything remotly funky.

Then you have peeps like Seiji who's last tracks kinda fed into that

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1xbfrAa1OM

Its all a bit African Forest

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fspurrtNbn4

I really like those tracks I just posted its just an influence that is beign a bit over played and I can see it getting a bit tired really quick.

jimitheexploder, Saturday, 23 April 2011 00:14 (thirteen years ago) link

I <3

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6F_f4LchNnI

But when you get a million tracks feeding off that vibe you just get blog house again and its a bit annoying.

I sware funky has more ideas in its little finger than dropping back into that electro house vibe again.

But Its on an edge right now. Its not feeding off dubstep if you ask me its feeding off blog house from years ago and its being egged on by this dutch connection lol.

jimitheexploder, Saturday, 23 April 2011 00:23 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't think blog house (In the post Soulwax/Kitsune sense) has anything to do with it - isn't it just a straight mid-00s electro-house into dutch thing?

I kinda get where you're coming from but this influence seems more muted to me than Soulserious(cat) traditionalism (which is the other side of the "African Forest" vibe), at least at the moment.

Tim F, Saturday, 23 April 2011 00:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Funky is just kinda frustrighting to me at the moment on one hand we’ve got pure soulful deep big room house, which is alright but I’m use to it since its been all over the shop unless you’re a pirate in London it seems. I mean you’d hear it in day time TV adds here about a decade ago and the rules haven’t changed that mujch to make it sound fresh again to my ears at least. Then you have the Dutch thing going on, its got some cool ideas but it isn’t a million miles away from Zomby Nation or Erol Alkan its pretty much thier tricks condenced. I keep hearing all this in funky radio recently. I’m not making a sweeping statment mind, I get diffrent vibes from diffrent DJs and producers but this is one vibe thats bugging me and embedding itself at the moment.
