The 'why the fuck did they vote for that appalling shit?' factor is quite low in this list though, compared to 2006 or, worse, 2002.

Disclaimer - didn't see Kings of Leon in there, and haven't heard the Glasvegas album.

Voted for Frightened Rabbit, which is my #2 album this year after Alopecia by Why? Can't believe they and especially Cut Copy didn't make the NME list. Nothing should surprise though, really.

To be fair, LotP sound like that live as well...

do you avoid music vids on youtube?
― Yentl vs Predator (blueski), Wednesday, 10 December 2008 15:29 (fifteen years ago) link
I don't avoid music vids on youtube so much as never, ever, ever watch them. I don't like music vids at the best of time and I certainly don't like them on youtube.

Voted The Gaslight Anthem, second on my personal list of 2008.

santogold vs marling vs school of 7 bells
actually a surprising amount of good albums here (where surprising = "any at all")
just seeing the names of the top 5 acts is now hive-inducing though.

bought ths nme. first time in a year. will read in the bath later. nearly everything i love this year is being ignored: m83, school of the seven bells, ne-yo, friendly fires (gets a token mention here), gang gang dance, air france's ep. are all music journalists deaf? and that's not to mention the tens of songs i think are amongst the best i've ever heard.

ha ha ha, I didn't even notice that! that's the best mixup since the album "His Name Is Alive" by the band "Livonia".
That's not a real LOTP .wav - they'd be much much much more sawtoothed than that.

Finally got round to listening to the poxy Foals album, sounds like they've nicked all their songs off Q And Not U and slung in a bit of Pigbag for good measure. Enjoyed some of it, always been a sucker for trebly guitars and skittering drums, but I got a bit naffed off with the singer.

Admit it, you went to that gig determined not to like it!
― Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 11 December 2008 14:05 (fifteen years ago) link
Not true! I went to that gig as excited as could be, I wore my silver spacejacket and everything, went and got a good spot in front of one of the pillars so I could see... and, as D observed "that was the quickest I've ever seen you go from bouncey to retching in my life!" I was excited by reports that it was the best live show they'd done in years! Those reports were wrong!
But anyway, this is not the thread for this.
― carrotcake.wav (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 11 December 2008 14:09 (fifteen years ago) link

― thomp, Friday, 19 December 2008 01:50 (fifteen years ago) link
I wasn't aware that Spiritualized, Primal Scream, TV On The Radio, The fucking Verve, Vampire Weekend, etc. were gay icons.
The Verve got a whopping two votes, ready the torches and pitchforks! And you're surely the biggest Spz booster on ILX passim by a factor of ten.
