Rolling Psych/Drone/Freak Thread 2011

Really digging the new Eternal Tapestry. Those stately tempos remind me of Parson Sound/Harvester and that is a wonderful thing. Glad I ignored the coupla "meh" reviews I read and trusted youse guys.

Is Mouthus still around? I've been listening to "Slow Globes" a little lately; those guys were really onto something with that album (and "Saw a Halo")and all the sudden the deluge dried up. Cough syrup rock! Am I the only guy who feels a bit nostalgic for the psych/noise of the mid-aughts?

Excited for new Religious Knives on Sacred Bones on 4/26. Disappointed that they're not on a major label anymore.

I had a moment this weekend with the Terracid track from the Wailing Bones volume 2 cdr on Foxglove.
I got pretty burned out on mid-aughts psych drone, tbh, but everyone once in a while it can still zap me right between the eyes.

I had to google Terracid to remember that I have something by him ("Evacuation of Earth"?). I like it, though my memories of it are a bit vague. It really was easy to get burnt out on all that shit coming out on cd-r's on teeny-tiny labels back then. Reading overheated descriptions about stuff on Volcanic Tongue was when I decided to bail out.

was just the other day thinking the same thing abt mouthus (ie what happened to 'em). Saw a live a cpl of times round abt 2005/6 and they were stunning both times - within the prescribed parameters of noise-psych-rock whatevs, they were def doing something a bit different, even original

i loved the first religious knives comp but didn't really dig their subsequent alt rock moves/sounds (thought the vox were a big mistake)

There's a Moon Unit from Glasgow, with members of Nackt Insecten, & a release on Blackest Rainbow, but this is the kind of band name where there could be a few different ones.

iirc someone on ilm was putting out releases by the british moon unit? they're pretty good anyway.

i missed the blood stereo show on sunday. too much going on. but i did want to see that. them and thurston/bill, um, lots of other people. oh well. they are playing in albany tonight. not that that probably does anyone any good here.

This Woven Music record by Shinji Masuko (from the Boredoms) is real blissed out and very psychedelic.
Sort of reminds me of Super Roots 5 in it's approach, but the results are more serene and meditative instead of just completely overpowering.

Anyone heard the new Mountains album yet? I've heard just one track - sounds like they've ditched the Stars of the Lid guitar ambient thing and opted for synths/kosmiche. Either way it sounds good and I'm excited to hear the whole thing.

True. I would be mildly disappointed that they're jumping on the bandwagon, except that I'm really into that particular bandwagon at the moment.

this is otm, i thought it was kinda zzzzz though. not bad, just not exceptional. but i need to listen again. i was in 90 degree texas sun about 20 miles/4 hours into a run when i played it before. not exactly ideal.

just got word of a Sun Araw + Eternal Tapestry collaboration, psyched

Huh. Etap dudes sat in with Sun Araw at the house here a couple months back. Went pretty good.

The friendship of Eternal Tapestry and Sun Araw's Cameron Stallones goes back to the Not Not Fun curated Neon Commune Fest, January 2007 at the much loved, and missed, Echo Curio in Eagle Rock, LA. Eternal Tapestry shared the second night's bill with Cameron's old band Magic Lantern (Barn Owl and Pocahaunted rounded out the night's festivities!), and the two psych crews hit it off immediately. LA shows were played together every time Eternal Tapestry made it south. Fast forward to Austin, TX for SXSW 2010 when Eternal Tapestry shared a bizarre afternoon parking lot gig with Sun Araw. The Tapestry had a live broadcast in-studio session lined up on KVRX student radio that night, and in true Tapestry fashion they invited their buddy Cameron to join in.

The session took place in a large TV studio on the UT campus, with the band setting up in a big circle. The line-up was Dewey Mahood and Nick Bindeman on guitars, Jed Bindeman on drums, Ryan Carlile on tenor sax, Yoni Kifle on bass, and Cameron Stallones on keyboard and trademark flute. After a brief discussion of mood, the six musicians improvised together for 45 minutes continuously. The music is heard as played that evening - no overdubs, and only a few edits to create a four section suite for the LP release. The piece is titled Night Gallery, in homage to the surreal early 1970's TV show produced by Rod Serling of Twilight Zone fame. It was this program that the six musicians fell asleep to, and woke up with, during their five day stay in Austin.

Yeah, the new pulse emitter tape is really something. Was listening to an older cd-r and it was pleasant but the difference between that an the newer material is pretty night and day. Excess fat has been trimmed, the tempos have slowed, and it all just feels much less improvised and I couldn't be happier

Yeah I've been digging their lp a lot lately..

Their debut didn't ring my bell as much as I thought it would, but still pretty good.

You're right though, the prices have gone slightly daft too. Last time I saw Bardo Pond here, there was only a handful of folks. Guessing it might be less this time what with the Finnish competition. Have no idea what sort of a following they have in the UK these days though.

Circle is the obvious choice there IMO. Not really a tough decision at all.
