tmi answer: the first time i used it, there were definitely a fair amount of gross dark bits that came out. since then, all is pretty good.

Apparently a lot of our headaches (husband's and mine) come from bad posture. LOLOLOL

I got a neti pot today (ceramic) and just did my first neti-nose-hoseing

Kind of feels like going swimming without, yknow, getting in the water. Oddly I kind of, enjoyed (?) it once I got the posture right. I lol'd when I finished though, cause I wandered off to get a clean t-shirt and water started trickling out of my nose

I've had bronchitis and sinus infection and allergies for a month and now that the bronchitis and sinus infection is largely cleared, I figured I'd get off the drugs and try something a bit more natural and preventive. So far: YAY!

from the other neti thread, my IMPORTANT THOUGHTS:

I'm using a tablespoon of water per pot, with the water hot to the touch but not painfully so. The salt and heat are there to give your body the sensation that this isn't a foreign medium being introduced; you're trying to get a comfortable balance. Depending on how stuffed up you are, you can just keep running water through until you're breathing clearly; as long as you're draining the water thoroughly, it won't do any harm if you do it twenty times a day.

In terms of "feeling like it's working", I'd just go by your ability to breath afterward. If you're still highly allergic afterwards, rinse that sucker once more. I don't think sinus irrigation can get rid of a cold, but constantly flushing the shit out of your head can prevent one from coming. It CAN break down blockage, but I'm not really using it for that. For me, it's about getting out allergens that I've inhaled that are continuing to irritate without breaking blood vessels blowing my nose or having to stand in front of an air conditioner all day.

answer to not getting water trapped in sinuses/ears: i do fifteen minutes of hamstring/calf/quad stretches and let my head drain out while I'm doing those.
it is unpleasant and it makes getting ready in the morning like an hour long thing but i can breathe and my foot pain is greatly lessened and i have learned to read the new yorker whilst doing all the above and now all these things are linked together in my mind: new yorker interviews/saltwater trickling out of my nose/warrior one pose

my post neti routine is left leg warrior one for a twenty count, then right leg
then touch yer toes/hang over your knees for a twenty count and twist to left and to right with a ten count apiece
probably TMI, but what happens here is that the saltwater still in your sinuses will move around and drain out while your head is at this acute angle. if that starts happening, just roll with it
then, standing and supporting yourself against a wall, quad stretch. Heel into buttock, stand erect and try to draw your knee as far back behind you as you semi comfortably can.
Do all the above five times. Generally i can get through a complete New Yorker article and a review/GOAT.
NEVER NEVER BLOW YOUR NOSE until after you're done with all the above; the water atomizes and clogs yer ears up.
i would like to point out that i hate doing this shit. but i also don't enjoy flossing and i do that anyway cuz i like to not get my teeth drilled. I also like to breathe and walk without pain. It's worth the time and it becomes a habit if you do it for about four months religiously.
i am late to work a lot.
this may be a given, but this is a warrior one stance: http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/1708
you ain't gotta do all that with the upper body (and i don't cuz you can't read) but it helps increase the stretch

this plus loratadin and singulaire finally tamed seasonal allergies that demolished my college years

even just for this first go, my nose has been clear all night, and gross mucus drip has subsided dramatically. my plan is to try once a day for a week, and see from there how I do. Sinus drip is more my concern, would love to not have a phlegm clump in my throat every morning

My neti mix is 1 tsp salt (kosher or pickling - no other additives in these and cheaper than the special neti pot pure salt), 1/2 tsp baking soda (as a buffer and helps to break up stuff better), 1/2 tsp xylitol (antibacterial) per cup of almost hot water. It helps the runny eyes part of allergies for me too, surprising but makes some sense as your tear ducts drain into your nose.

brain-eating amoeba ingested by neti pot?

The rare infection also killed a 16-year-old Florida girl this month, who fell ill after swimming. Those two deaths are consistent with past cases, which are usually kids — often boys — who get exposed to the bug while swimming or doing water sports in warm ponds or lakes.

The third case, in Louisiana, was more unusual. It was a young man whose death in June was traced to the tap water he used in a device called a neti pot. It's a small teapot-shaped container used to rinse out the nose and sinuses with salt water to relieve allergies, colds and sinus trouble.

naw, that's still ingesting. anything you take into your system that stays is ingested.

fuckin love neti pottin! i started doing it in the shower, mostly for the convenience of hot water etc also i do everything i can in the shower, i like to think the combo of sinus irrigation + deep breathing the steam = my current respiratory health.

all my adult life i have gotten ear infections about once a year, usually in oct or nov, but not since the neti!
