Ah, OK. It's hard to see.

I know. Please write your Senator, like the rest of us.

grassroots success propelled by an open taping policy and word of mouth. exceptional musicians, love to play together and are good to their fans. all band members paid equally, contributes millions to schools, charities, and causes like Vote for Change. Dave is odd and funny and gracious and his insight to the world has been very comforting to me through various life crisis over the years and things like the Bush administration. He makes millions but still drives a 96 Subaru, and helps strangers move couches, and always has time to chat it up and take pictures with a fan.

none of this means you have to like Dave or their music. haters have always been there, especially among the vinyl-collecting (I think it's a rule). it's ok. I just listen because it makes me feel good, and that's all it comes down to.

missed this thread!

Reasons why they are so HAD and BAITED...

Bimble, Friday, 9 March 2007 02:50 (seventeen years ago) link

One of the best House episodes I've seen in a long time. Is Dave Matthews trying to be an actor now, or was it just some one-off thing? Not that I particularly care.

musically, Friday, 9 March 2007 09:50 (seventeen years ago) link

I loved that House episode. The triple-twist ending alone was worth it. Also - we made jokes about whether Dave Matthews was playing himself all evening. Cheap joke? Maybe, but I laughed.

Mordechai Shinefield, Friday, 9 March 2007 10:19 (seventeen years ago) link

"we made jokes about whether Dave Matthews was playing himself "

It wasn't far off actually. He routinely acts like a fool when he is nervous, randomly yelps between songs or blurts out gibberish, and tells odd but funny stories about goat penises and a variety of other topics. My daughter and I were laughing during his scenes on House because he was so....Dave.

Yeah, but what about the dudes he has combing the audience for attractive women to give backstage passes to? Because a friend of a friend totally got offered a chance to "hang out with Dave." Goat penis might be a clever metaphor.

I also enjoy fans referring to "seeing Dave" or just say "Dave" all the time and think that I'm supposed to understand what they're referring to in casual conversation. So you saw Dave Barry talk about his new book? Or went to a taping of Letterman?

This is all sort of academic since I haven't talked to someone who's made such a reference for a couple years, but post-comment skipping, this thread needs some wheels.

There are people who go out into the audience before shows and randomly offer someone seat upgrades to first row or to come participate in the meet & greet and hang out backstage. As far as I know this happens at every show (just never to me yet!)

As for "seeing Dave" - a lot of fans hate it when people say that, unless he is solo. If any member left the band or died, there would be no more DMB, the end. (Don't get any ideas haters!)

Whatever happened to the Dave Matthews Band? The last hit I remember by them was "I Did It" and that was, like, six years ago!

A DMB fan took out my addition on the Wikipedia page about DMB:

It went something like this:

Popular Culture:
In the Futurama episode "The Why of Fry", when the Nibblonians are telling Fry that he is very important, Fry incredulously asks "So the feeling I get when I'm drunk is correct?". The Nibblonians reply: "Yes, except that the Dave Matthews Band does not rock".

I once was asked whether I liked Dave Matthews by school mates towards the end of high school (who were clearly fanatics), before I had heard any of their songs. Thinking they were talking about Matthew Sweet, I answered "yeah, I like a few of his songs".

That moment will sit badly with me forever.

What is Dave Matthews listening to? Matthews tells us about Xiu Xiu, the experimental indie project of Californian singer-songwriter Jamie Stewart, who, Matthews says, Tim Reynolds turned him on to. “There’s something about it where you can’t put it down,” he says. “It’s like crazy person music, but it’s really slammin’ and it’s really beautiful. He’s a little bit precious maybe — and ‘a little bit’ may be understating it — but there’s something about it that I go back and I listen to it again, and I like it.”

Listening to DMB at work, it occurred to me that their songs could be much improved by simply ommitting the clarinet and piccolo or whatever woodwinds they are using.

So I'm watching a little bit of this documentary on IFC called "Before the Music Dies." The filmmakers travelled around the U.S. trying to find out why mainstream music is so packaged and repetitive, and whether the major labels are able to silence innovation.
Up comes a clip of Dave Matthews, and I assumed this was an illustration of this bland, "packaged and repetitive" music that's so common. I was wrong. They were used as an example of one of the few, truly innovative bands that broke through the corporate oppression and got their music out to the masses.
Huh? WHy, because there's a violin on stage?
