Beatrix v. Gogo Yubari 1
this one is so fucking good

as much as i absolutely love these movies, i still feel a bit robbed by the fact that they had to ditch the original ending of beatrix & bill fighting on a moonlit beach outside his hacienda
― blingee cummings (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 20 March 2011 05:16 (thirteen years ago) link
for me it pretty much ruined the movie.
― Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 20 March 2011 05:42 (thirteen years ago) link
i feel like the movie is juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust whimsical enough in places to get away with the anti-climactic exploding heart ending, but yeah it's a bit of a disappointment
― blingee cummings (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 20 March 2011 05:44 (thirteen years ago) link
I mean fuck, they spend half of both movies building up to a mammoth confrontation. Even SONNY FUCKING CHIBA is scared of Bill! And then he just slices some wonderbread, rambles on for 10 minutes and gets killed in a split second "fight."
― Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 20 March 2011 05:45 (thirteen years ago) link
jord do you know if there was a reason why they ditched the original ending?
― iatee, Sunday, 20 March 2011 05:47 (thirteen years ago) link
i read on imdb that it's just cuz production was running too long
― blingee cummings (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 20 March 2011 05:47 (thirteen years ago) link
i have mixed feelings -- on the one hand, i feel like they should've just said fuck a deadline & filmed the scene. also feel like even if they had to ditch that scene in particular, they could've choreographed a cool sword fight in the hacienda or whatever. on the other hand i sorta feel like the sword fighting in vol. 1 (or the first two hours, if we're talking about a full movie) is so heavy & epic that it might've been hard to do a beatrix/bill final swordfight w/o it feeling anti-climactic in some regard
― blingee cummings (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 20 March 2011 05:51 (thirteen years ago) link
that is such a lame reason damn!
― iatee, Sunday, 20 March 2011 05:52 (thirteen years ago) link
pretty sure the Weinsteins cut off the money.
― Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 20 March 2011 05:52 (thirteen years ago) link
isn't QT notorious for that kinda thing? didn't they film IB in some insanely short period of time because he was intent on getting the movie to sundance
right xp

I feel like this would work well on tv, wouldn't feel ruined w/ commercials
― iatee, Sunday, 20 March 2011 05:56 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah & since they're airing it after midnight they haven't really edited anything out except for a few "fucks" and lucy liu's exposed brain

also, bourne supremacy is on tbs -- it's like turner broadcasting directly consulted me on what to put on after the tourney games

Elle Driver fight is the best moment in either movie. ending of KB2 is closest i've come to throwing my hands up and saying "I've had it with Tarantino" - that thing he does where he builds tension with long conversations is great when he pulls it off, but when he doesn't the scene sinks like a stone. there's no tension to the confrontation w/Bill and there's no ~emotional weight~ to it either... these movies are just overstuffed and i think there's a lot of perfectly good scenes in them that would've played better if they were in a movie with more modest goals.

haha i loved the bill fight! i did think this movie was Too Long and prob could have lost a whole 20 minutes if you just deflowered people's syntax a lil, so i am not endorsing every second of the goldfish/superman stuff, but the actual "fight" i thought was great: bill walking barefoot into the dark garden while you count his steps, and then the play-gunfight-echoing silent drop to the grass. cannot imagine coming to the end of four hours of kill bill and feeling cheated of swordfights. i saw the first one in the theatre and didn't see this one till just now, but i rewatched the first one first, hence my whetted swordfight appetite i guess. anyway, good breakup movie.

Yeah, Bill's death is great! It's possible when I first saw this I was disappointed that there wasn't more of a "final fight" but it totally made sense to me. Plus she'd already been through the sort of "samurai showdown" deal with O-Ren, it wouldn't be anything new. Maybe the idea is we've finally arrived at the last cult genre which Elle must face, and it's...a Tarantino movie! Everybody's just talking about pop culture and dying at inopportune moments.
At the time I was convinced the one-movie version would be way better. Not sure how I feel now, having not watched them in ages they seem pretty watchable and great in my memory, but I suspect there's enough flab that it could be made to kinda work, though at the expense of what I'm not sure. You could easily do a re-cut of these that dials it all down to a wacky comedy, and one that cuts all the laugh lines for something much more brutal and exhausting. Or it could primarily be a slow "hunt" kind of movie if the action scenes were all sliced down to their climaxes.

i'm sure i'll be a minority of one here, but i thought the kill bill movies were wretched. there's a grim, seedy joylessness that normally runs through tarantino's movies, but the grim, seedy joylessness here swallows-up the entirety of these two movies.
and i like grim movies! maybe i've just had enough of tarantino's particular style. he still writes good dialogue.

Baffled by the winner of this poll.
― Nhex, Monday, 10 February 2014 19:56 (ten years ago) link
if this were deaths not fights bill would be the easy winner: nail in head, decapitation, etc., vs broken heart

the problem with the crazy 88 fight is thurman just doesn't move very well and that sequence exposes her limitations more than any other... its heart is in the right place though

i'm baffled that you people remember more than three scenes of a distended foot-fetish chopsocky movie.

really, at this point, you are 'baffled' by these things

yeah, you people are too smart not to see through this garbage-picking charlatan
tho the KBs were at least mediocre

a distended foot-fetish chopsocky movie.
colorful description! i had to look up "distended"(swollen due to pressure from inside; bloated). the rest i got.
his movies have been far less foot-fetish-y, and far more chopsocky-y, lately.

I'm A fan of the Bill fight too, it's swiftness after the length of the build-up is really well done. V2>>V1 imo.
