xp to Alan N: will probably give it another shot, liked some of it, just seemed like it would take more time to 'get it' than I wanted to give...

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

I've been enjoying re-listening to Gluey Porch Treatments and Ozma. I remember first hearing Melvins around '88 -- there was really no one that sounded remotely like them at the time, and I feel those albums should get some bonus points for being the first. Eggnog and Lysol are cool, but I much prefer them in a series of short bursts. BTW, it's been a decade since Ipecac remastered and reissued Gluey. What's keeping them from doing Ozma and a kickass deluxe package with Boris, Eggnog and Lysol?

Fastnbulbous, Monday, 21 March 2011 18:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Oops, I accidentally substituted the awesome lead track "Boris" for Bullhead.

Fastnbulbous, Monday, 21 March 2011 18:42 (thirteen years ago) link

a Bullhead without "Boris" is no Bullhead imo

They really do need to do a boxed set of the Boner Years.

Wow, the early stuff dominated. Thought I might see a point or two for Nude With Boots, but just so much stuff to choose from. I sent a link to Ipecac ;)

LOL!

you should do a Melvins re-poll from 1999 forward (Crybaby, Bootlicker, Maggot onward) -- would be much more interesting!

I imagine the Melvins own the rights to these records so I can't imagine it would be too much trouble to arrange a re-ish. There are some singles and stuff around this period too for bonus tracks, etc.

less interesting, as it would have less voters

what would you recommend to listen to first, fastnbulbous, in your world of post-99 Melvins albums

I may be wrong but I think his name is Husher (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 22 March 2011 14:24 (thirteen years ago) link

more interesting as we'd learn what ppl actually liked (if anything) from the last decade of melvins

post 99 top 5

1. A Senile Animal
2. The Bootlicker
3. Nude With Boots
4. Colossus Of Destiny
5. Pigs of the Roman Empire

A Senile Animal is my fave Big Biz era LP just because they were still figuring it out and there's a lot of tension, sloppiness and weirdness on it before they got all super-duper tight. The Bootlicker is a great outlier record, almost indie rock/post-rock in parts and dudes were no joke with melodies anyway

what about Hostile Ambient Takeover Whiney?

One of my least favorites, actually! My fave Melvs records are the ones where they're the most all-out poppy (Houdini, Stoner Witch, Senile Animal) or the most art-rocky weirdo-sludgo (Crybaby, Lysol, Colossus Of Destiny). HAT is kind of on the unadventurous side for a Melvins record.

The new live record is fucking boss, btw

picked up Gluey Porch Treatments and it's so good, one of those bands who apparently emerged fully formed and had it nailed from the beginning

It's been hard to get excited about most of what they've done post-Big Business lineup. I haven't even bothered to check out their album from February.
