I was a bit saddened the other day to see a sign for a doggy day care facility near here - that'd have been a brilliant idea if I'd had it first. not that it's not a good idea anyway, but it being someone else's idea kind of ruins the chances of me making money off it if I'd been smart enough to think of it in the first place.

ailsa, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Darragh, Gamestop are selling them in their stores for 270 incl. one controller and Wii Sports. Another controller costs 44.99 with another 21.99 for the nunchuck (???). There doesn't appear to be one near you I'm afraid.

Ailsa: professional neighbourhood watchperson?

kv_nol, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Darragh, would driving up to the North be an option?

kv_nol, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:59 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm trying to work out a brilliant tax scam, where i create a shell company providing services to myself including home maintenance, feeding, hygiene assistance, communications and entertainment. there's gotta be a way to break even on this- look at the hours i'm willing to put in.

darraghmac, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 13:02 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost, i'd consider it, yeah. might be doing a belfast shopping day before christmas.

darraghmac, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 13:02 (sixteen years ago) link

wii is still a germ of an idea, might be tricky buying it for three brothers who live in three separate addresses most of the year...

darraghmac, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 13:03 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm up in Belfast in November. I'll price them there and decide then whether to splurge. SO has threatened to throw it off balcony already :(

re. covering self: that's easier than you think. Much easier. Also if you were willing to lose a limb/fake injury you could do very well.

kv_nol, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 13:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Maybe you should watch that film "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" (I haven't but it sounds like you might be able to plug "Wii" in there.)

Misery, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 13:05 (sixteen years ago) link

re: losing limb just to stay at home-

hmm. i'm not, really. there's no other way? cos that'd be, y'know, a real bummer.

darraghmac, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 13:06 (sixteen years ago) link

i suppose it might bring us together, having a wii in the house.

insert water sports jokes.

darraghmac, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 13:07 (sixteen years ago) link

I am so proud of my Wii joke.

Ailsa, Darragh, there are a number of drawbacks with my job, the main one being that it pays absolutely terrible money. Also I think, Darragh, that you'd have to be willing to spend at least six months in Dublin, because you'd have to come into the office for the first few months before they'd let you telecommute. It is a sweet job, though.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:10 (sixteen years ago) link

it pays absolutely terrible money

Unfortunately, it seems many writing jobs do. This is one of the reasons I shunned a career in writing early on for the more dubious career of Webmonkey.

On that note may I just say that IE 6 is at the top of my shitlist today, even above mean, fat, fighting cats and little, ringworm-having, middle-of-the-night-pooping and keeping-me-awake cats.

FUCK YOU IE 6!!!

Misery, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:25 (sixteen years ago) link

One of my goldfish looks really, really ill. I am worried about him. He can't require euthanizing while Mister M is away, I cannot cope.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:27 (sixteen years ago) link

terrible money >>>>> no money at all

poor goldfish :-(

ailsa, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:27 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm not on fantastic money where i am, and i spend at least 80 quids and 5-6 hours a week to get to work.

however, i realise this is a pitifully small commute for a lot of people, and life is pretty cheap for me at present, so i'm not gonna claim to be hugely discontented.

i'm looking at self employment in the next few years anyway, i'm just building up experience and savings for the while, and public sector life ain't bad.

many xxposts to ailsa.

what is he doing?

I had a beta fish once that developed dropsy (I think). It was sad as I could do nothing for him.

Misery, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Dropsy?!

Michael White, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:34 (sixteen years ago) link

that's why i always wait and pay for the fully tested fish

I think that's what it was called. Basically he couldn't stay down in the water, he kept rising to the top, sideways. He could still eat but his general fish-ness was not in order. He lasted a couple of weeks this way and then his time came. :(

I hope your fish gets better, Trish.

Holy shit! One of mine had the same. I thought it was a pretty cool trick. Until he died.

kv_nol, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:38 (sixteen years ago) link

That sounds like swim bladder problems.

Dropsy is when the fish swells up and its scales stand out sideways. It can be caused by a bunch of things and is sometimes treatable.

He/she has developed a very swollen belly. I have examined the literature online, and he/she either has internal parasites or is suffering from eggbinding. Either way, I'm going to have to get that fish out of the tank and into an isolation tank so I can treat it.

haha, poor fish.

I think after the holidays I might get a beta for my desk up here.

Trish drops the fish science. Obv. I am just an occasional hobbyist.

Misery, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:39 (sixteen years ago) link

The Internet has been a great friend to me since I started keeping goldfish. Plus Mister M loves the science of it. Pipettes, and chemicals that change colour, and everything.

Michael White, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:44 (sixteen years ago) link

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:45 (sixteen years ago) link

I do like a mad professor to be well turned out, though.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 15:13 (sixteen years ago) link

accentmonkey, good luck with your fish friend. Some of my fish ended up constipated, so I had to give them a saltwater bath and try to feed them frozen peas.

I will cheer your animal husbandry skills with TAY-TOS! your random gift skills roXXor!!

Mr. P claimed the smoky bacon flavor and declared them to be one of the best foods ever. then he said "I've never eaten anything from a random internet person before." I snarfed the cheese and onion crisps immediately post-workout! the turtle is hanging out on the table and we're keeping the parrots away from it. postcards and paper things make me happy!

Country relish looks delish, what's it generally used for?

patita, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 15:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Update on Mrs GB. Her memory is nearly back and the power to her left side is returning slowly. Unfortunately, it means she has remembered that she didn't agree to buy me trousers or a Wii as an extra xmas pressie. Bum.

I like fish.

Guilty_Boksen, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 15:21 (sixteen years ago) link

kv_lol doesn't. (maybe that's just to eat though)

aldo, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 15:30 (sixteen years ago) link

i don't like fish. they look weird and they smell weird and they probably taste weird even though i wouldn't eat them due to weird look and smell and memories of them tasting weird last time i ate them.

ailsa, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 16:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Don't love to eat them fishies . . . Fishies what I hate to eat! No biting they little heads off, thank God they've no tiny feet

Michael White, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 16:30 (sixteen years ago) link

OKay, why isn't ailsa getting as much of a slagging as me? So unfair...

you know how you can tell you're going to have a great day? you wake yourself up with your own laughter! i woke up a little while ago, and i was chuckling - have no recollection what i was dreaming about, but i'm in the best mood already.

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 17:57 (sixteen years ago) link

mr white, do you have any fun facts to tell me about the bay area before i move there?

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 18:04 (sixteen years ago) link

None whatsoever. I wouldn't want the fun of discovery to be spoiled, anyway.

(I R BRANEDED, TODAY)

Don't love to eat them fishies . . . Fishies what I hate to eat! No biting they little heads off, thank God they've no tiny feet

Now, explain me this rhyme, please. When I was ten, someone I knew went to America and brought me back a set of ten notecards with a cartoon cat on singing that song about the mousies, and I had them for so long (because I didn't send a lot of letters and cards to people, being ten and all) that the song has kind of been burned into my mind. Where does it come from?

Also, Patita, I'm glad the package arrived safely. Tayto Cheese and Onion crisps are a national institution, I'm relieved you liked them (also they make excellent packaging). Ballymaloe Relish can be used on burgers, cheese sandwiches, maybe hot dogs, who knows? It's tomatoey and quite sweet, good gear. I'm going to have some with roquefort on toast tonight to celebrate the package's safe arrival.

<a href="http://www.eatmousies.com/";>B. Kliban's Cats</a>

Michael White, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 18:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Arse! Wrong code!

accentmonkey, which Tayto, the Northern Irish or the Republic ones?

Michael White, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 18:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh please. Those Tandragee wankers. As if.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 18:16 (sixteen years ago) link

(Um, the Republic ones, I mean)

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 18:16 (sixteen years ago) link

So I was right to think it's a bit like ketchup (judging by the ingredients)?

I was going to try some on brisket, but Mr. P accused me of being a yankee. Cheese sandwich sounds ideal though! Tonight we'll divvy up the salt n vinegars and dream of sitting in an Irish pub.

patita, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 18:17 (sixteen years ago) link

B. Kliban's Cats

My notelet cat! Wow. I haven't seen him for 27 years.

Patita, you go ahead and eat it on brisket. It came from overseas and is therefore sophisticated.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 18:19 (sixteen years ago) link

trish, i still need to send you whittaker's chocolate! i keep forgetting!

mr white: i'm actually looking forward to exploring the place. but if i get a waitressing job, can i expect to make lots of tips because of my kiwi accent? :)

also: a very old friend of mine turned up at my work last night, completely out of the blue (haven't spoken to him in a year), and when i told him about jordan and moving to the US, he revealed that he's very good friends with the US embassador and also a high-ranking new zealander who works at the embassy, so i'm hoping this will somehow make getting a visa/cutting through redtape, at least a little easier.

yay for friends in high places!

Rubyredd, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 18:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Well, Rubyredd, I would love chocolate, but if you've continent-moving things to do, don't worry about it.

And work those connections!

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 18:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Kliban was big here when I was a kid - everyone had one of his books.

Ruby, yes and because you're cute. (Also competent, so triple threat, really.)
