aldo, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:00 (sixteen years ago) link

a little, yeah.

darraghmac, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:06 (sixteen years ago) link

You all have so much fluid dialoge going but my brain is still pained from too little sleep.

Misery, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:13 (sixteen years ago) link

My mind is now boggling about what darra searches for on ebay.

aldo, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:16 (sixteen years ago) link

this has gone too far, as usual.

kinda like an amish in a str...oh, never mind.

darraghmac, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:18 (sixteen years ago) link

I had a weird kind of ego boost this morning. My editor called me to tell me that he is leaving the job. Sadface, because he's a good guy and I like him. It also turns out that the other abstract writer who started a month before me is leaving, and my editor says he is actually kind of relieved about this because he never really got the job. He has, for example, never made it up to the 100 abstracts a week that a writer is supposed to produce.

It's weird for me to realise that a job that seems so very easy to me is in fact not that easy for everyone. Having spent years struggling in the computer industry and in retail, I have finally found something I'm really good at. It's just a shame nobody values it as a skill.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Never really "got" the job, as in understood it, I mean.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:26 (sixteen years ago) link

komplett.ie has a wii with one controller for 260 not including delivery. I don't trust ebay due to past experiences buying a second hand ps2.

(xpost) well done accentmonkey!

kv_nol, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:27 (sixteen years ago) link

Sounds like your boss values it as a skill! That counts for something, right?

argh, I don't know how to cut through my brain fog. I seriously feel like I didn't sleep at all last night. so not cool.

Misery, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:28 (sixteen years ago) link

i don't understand what an 'abstract writer' does, i confess, but i'm willing to believe you do it very well, accentmonkey.

i'm trying to get euro prices on amazon, and it's denying me this basic human right /entitlement.

darraghmac, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Amazon £180, which is about 300 Euro.

aldo, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:31 (sixteen years ago) link

She does to writing what Jackson Pollack did to painting.

Darra, Amazon wants none of your socialist coin.

Misery, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:31 (sixteen years ago) link

my coin is not socialist, my coin is amish.

how many bushels of wheat is 300 of your pounds?

darraghmac, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Only 2% of America farms. The rest of us just consumes.

Misery, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:34 (sixteen years ago) link

Amish wii = who can churn butter fastest.

aldo, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:35 (sixteen years ago) link

"consume"?

argggh. . . hate bad brain.

On the way into the parking garage (yes I've went from green transit to polluting in one week!) NPR was doing a story on American farm subsidies fucking over the rest of the world. Nice.

Misery, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Amish ILx = slacking off behind the meetinghouse trying to show each other up with plow bit knowledge

Misery, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:38 (sixteen years ago) link

The great thing is, nobody seems to know what an abstract writer does. I write little synopses of articles from academic and trade journals and magazines that get sold to libraries and so on. You read them and decide whether that's the article you're looking for.

What do Amish gamers say?
No John Book, it's not our Wii!

You would perhaps have to be a bit sad to get that joke.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:39 (sixteen years ago) link

stripclub ilx- why macbooks were invented.

i don't get it, accentmonkey.

ah wait, i do i think.

I know what you do. :) Writing is an always valuable, multi-faceted skill.

Misery, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:41 (sixteen years ago) link

I laffed.

aldo, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:42 (sixteen years ago) link

(I didn't get it. But then I've missed out on the morning's worth of amish/video game jokes.)

Thanks for the concern over Mrs GB, but we are used to these episodes now, though thankfully they only occur once or twice a year.

It is still a bit frightening, especially when her GP told her it is imperative to take her medication as quickly as possible once the onset begins as there is a danger she may not comeout of the paralysis (basically, a stroke).

These days I try and use the episodes to my advantage (just told her she agreed to pay for the trousers that have been delivered from Next and I am thinking or telling her she agreed to pay for a Wii for us as an extra Xmas present!)

Accentmonkey, that is an awful enough joke to make me lol!

Guilty_Boksen, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:47 (sixteen years ago) link

I am a bad man.

Guilty_Boksen, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:48 (sixteen years ago) link

accentmonkey, how does one get a job doing this? I am currently researching options of things I can do from home, since I'm not terribly keen on ever returning to a workplace full of people but need to earn some money. Any ideas, people?

ailsa, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:49 (sixteen years ago) link

boo hiss, etc, GB

darraghmac, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Web design.

Selling things on eBay.

Misery, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:50 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah i wanna job from home too, someone gizza clue.

ugh web design. i've made my feelings clear about ebay, fail Ms.

darraghmac, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:50 (sixteen years ago) link

darrgh, you won't be able to buy wii from amazon. It's the whole recycling charge thing.

kv_nol, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:51 (sixteen years ago) link

ugh web design.

I agree which is why I (try to) only do it from the office.

I could not work at home so all my suggestions are bad. I just screw around too much.

Misery, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Ailsa, I know, daycare facility!

Misery, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:52 (sixteen years ago) link

bwahahahahahaha. ha.

Um, no.

ailsa, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:53 (sixteen years ago) link

;)

Misery, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:55 (sixteen years ago) link

I was a bit saddened the other day to see a sign for a doggy day care facility near here - that'd have been a brilliant idea if I'd had it first. not that it's not a good idea anyway, but it being someone else's idea kind of ruins the chances of me making money off it if I'd been smart enough to think of it in the first place.

ailsa, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Darragh, Gamestop are selling them in their stores for 270 incl. one controller and Wii Sports. Another controller costs 44.99 with another 21.99 for the nunchuck (???). There doesn't appear to be one near you I'm afraid.

Ailsa: professional neighbourhood watchperson?

kv_nol, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Darragh, would driving up to the North be an option?

kv_nol, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 12:59 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm trying to work out a brilliant tax scam, where i create a shell company providing services to myself including home maintenance, feeding, hygiene assistance, communications and entertainment. there's gotta be a way to break even on this- look at the hours i'm willing to put in.

darraghmac, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 13:02 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost, i'd consider it, yeah. might be doing a belfast shopping day before christmas.

darraghmac, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 13:02 (sixteen years ago) link

wii is still a germ of an idea, might be tricky buying it for three brothers who live in three separate addresses most of the year...

darraghmac, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 13:03 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm up in Belfast in November. I'll price them there and decide then whether to splurge. SO has threatened to throw it off balcony already :(

re. covering self: that's easier than you think. Much easier. Also if you were willing to lose a limb/fake injury you could do very well.

kv_nol, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 13:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Maybe you should watch that film "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" (I haven't but it sounds like you might be able to plug "Wii" in there.)

Misery, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 13:05 (sixteen years ago) link

re: losing limb just to stay at home-

hmm. i'm not, really. there's no other way? cos that'd be, y'know, a real bummer.

darraghmac, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 13:06 (sixteen years ago) link

i suppose it might bring us together, having a wii in the house.

insert water sports jokes.

darraghmac, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 13:07 (sixteen years ago) link

I am so proud of my Wii joke.

Ms. M, for full explanation, see here:

Ailsa, Darragh, there are a number of drawbacks with my job, the main one being that it pays absolutely terrible money. Also I think, Darragh, that you'd have to be willing to spend at least six months in Dublin, because you'd have to come into the office for the first few months before they'd let you telecommute. It is a sweet job, though.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:10 (sixteen years ago) link

it pays absolutely terrible money

Unfortunately, it seems many writing jobs do. This is one of the reasons I shunned a career in writing early on for the more dubious career of Webmonkey.

On that note may I just say that IE 6 is at the top of my shitlist today, even above mean, fat, fighting cats and little, ringworm-having, middle-of-the-night-pooping and keeping-me-awake cats.

FUCK YOU IE 6!!!

One of my goldfish looks really, really ill. I am worried about him. He can't require euthanizing while Mister M is away, I cannot cope.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:27 (sixteen years ago) link

terrible money >>>>> no money at all

poor goldfish :-(

ailsa, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 14:27 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm not on fantastic money where i am, and i spend at least 80 quids and 5-6 hours a week to get to work.

however, i realise this is a pitifully small commute for a lot of people, and life is pretty cheap for me at present, so i'm not gonna claim to be hugely discontented.

i'm looking at self employment in the next few years anyway, i'm just building up experience and savings for the while, and public sector life ain't bad.

many xxposts to ailsa.
