Also, in between parts 1 and 2, that Might and Magic game came out, which was superior in several ways

Gamasutra Top 5 iPhone games

jjjusten: The only new iPhone game i really enjoyed this year. Soosiz is a criminally undersung platformer with some great level design, lots of content and great implementation of touch controls. In a perfect world would have gotten more people to notice it, but eh what can you do.

Matt D: A solid mobile shooter that will procedurally generate levels based on any music stored on my device? do you count Canabalt or Super Hook Champ as platformers? those are the only superior iOS platformers I can think of, although it's not exactly a bumper crop.

Hook Champ was pretty sweet, I gotta say

Nhex, Thursday, 3 March 2011 23:43 (thirteen years ago) link

never played super hook champ - canabalt didnt really grab me i guess - soosiz def seems way more varied and old schooly

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 3 March 2011 23:44 (thirteen years ago) link

I'd have played Soosiz by now if it wasn't for the design style, but I've just played a few too many average games that look like that (like Rolando, and iBlast Moki, and that one on the PSP that they're all ripped from). Is it honestly better than all those? Cos none of those were really that good.

Didn't know Space Invaders existed though, bought.

Enjoyed Space Miner while it lasted, and played through the whole thing, but kind of can't remember much about it now? Except that it was maybe a bit too easy.

JimD, Friday, 4 March 2011 10:12 (thirteen years ago) link

The Settlers 7 vote was mine. Fanastic-est RTS ever, wrapped in a hilariously inappropriate (actually very annoying) cartoon-princess storyline.

It's monstrously complex, but perfecly pitched so as to keep you trying & learning. The in-map graphics are lovely; watching your little people mooching about never gets old, even when they're bitching about the lack of sausages. Skip the campaign and go straight for skirmish mode.

i mean, i agree the repackaging is lazy, that's why i gave it 10 points. but can't f/w the games imo, and i played the shit out of this in Q4 2010. had to throw points since i played it a bunch...

Salsa Shark: I found the first version of Scribblenauts to be a bit disappointing. Conjuring up random things and making various beasts/humans fight one another was entertaining enough, but the control system when actually trying to complete tasks was so frustrating that I didn’t get very far before shelving the game. Super Scribblenauts was a huge improvement; something as simple as moving Maxwell with the D-pad instead of the stylus actually turned the entire game around. Oh, and the addition of adjectives is pretty fun, too. When your lexicon is exhausted of adjectives and obscure nouns, you can always resort to good ol’ random fights to the death between depressed ninja velociraptors and posh metal Cthulhus or other descriptive monsters of your choice. Super wicked.

forksclovetofu: I honestly wish I wasn’t once bitten, twice shy about this game but I still feel a bit wary of trying what sounds like the game the first one should’ve been after struggling with the janky controls and ???? puzzles in 2009, especially given the mixed reviews. Plus at this point it just feels like 5th Cell should join forces with Media Molecule and make a Little Big Scribblenauts and get the job done right.

I'm actually finding this rate of unveiling to be pretty great, because it means I get time to try these games out as we go. Unlike previous years, where the sheer volume of stuff to play gets quickly overwhelming and I end up never get round to most of them.

JimD, Saturday, 12 March 2011 18:32 (thirteen years ago) link

this is a valid point; I've been playing Desktop Dungeons relentlessly ever since its entry. definitely would have made my ballot if I'd played it last year!

#84: Victorian BMX – Flash – 10 pts – 1 vote – FREE!

Nhex: I played A LOT of Flash games this year, even more than usual. It seemed like there was inventive, fresh stuff coming out every week in 2011 from every corner of the web. Victorian BMX was easily one of my favorites. This game had wonderful art, tight controls, addictive score chasing and an amusing, stupid metal riff that plays nonstop in the background to pump you up.
