I HATED "Shine," but I can stand some of the stuff on "Dosage," which my friends back in college, oddly enough at Uconn, used to play all the time. Nothing was distinctive enough for me to remember it by name.

"Shine" had to have been the most played song on the radio during the entire 90s. I think it was played even more than "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "I Want It That Way."

Shine is ALWAYS on, still... in Connecticut we get it on 102.1, 99.1, 105.9, 96.5 at least once a week when i'm in the car (which isn't very often, so i have to imagine that gets shitloads of play)

I bought whatever album that has that 'December' song on it when I was in 8th grade from one of those BMG music 7 CDs for a penny deals. I generally keep all the albums I buy because a collection's a collection. So now I have a Collective Soul album. And it makes me sad.

In 1997, I was working as a waiter at First Avenue, the Minneapolis nightclub, when Collective Soul played. It was an all-ages show, and I was serving drinks upstairs. Actually, what I mean is that I was serving cheap beer to quarter-tipping fuckers upstairs. Anyway, the place was full and the band was playing. I'd always thought "Shine" was the worst single of the decade up to that point--obviously, I had yet to hear "Virtual Insanity"--and was having a bad time all around. So far, so whatever.

Then they played "Shine." It came about 2/3 into the set, was greeted enthusiastically, yadda yadda yadda. Then they revved into the pre-chorus, down-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh, and then THE ENTIRE FUCKING AUDIENCE DOWNSTAIRS WENT "yuh!" AT ONCE. Every single one of them. I was carrying a full tray of PBRs and I nearly dropped it. It was horrible and yet magnificent at the same time.

I really like "Gel" and "December."
I can't fucking stand "Shine."

"I like the way Mr. Snrub thinks!" Agree 100% with that assessment.

7 years pass...

"December" is one of the worst songs I've ever heard.
